It’s Love That Blinds Him – Chapter 7

“I actually wanted to tell you that I’m ready to marry you.” Malcolm finished his words after a short moment.

“What? You must be crazy! Do you even know me? Do you know what family I come from? Do you know what I do? How can you agree to marry me so easily?” said Lucie, bursting into laughter.

Since she was drunk, she wasn’t in her right mind.

On the other hand, the man in front of her hadn’t been drinking at all; he was sober. He didn’t smell of alcohol or cigarettes, which men are known to consume. He just smelled like a fresh wave of seawater. It was obvious that he was sober and lucid. “Why is he laughing at me?”

“You don’t have to put up with all this. But if you wish to know, I can tell you about my life. But that would be as disgusting as soap operas.” Lucia stopped laughing. “Well, do you have any water here? I’ve had too much to drink, and I’m thirsty now.” Then she raised her head and looked Malcolm in the eye.

Suddenly, he carried her in his arms, which made Lucia scream. Gently, he laid her on the living room sofa as if she were very fragile and in danger of breaking easily.

While Lucia was still stunned, he leaned over and kissed her forehead before heading for the fridge. He then took out a bottle of cold water, unscrewed the lid and handed it to her. Taking a seat with her on the sofa, he drew her into his arms.

And Lucia was unable to resist him. Malcolm’s embrace was warm. She felt safe and at peace. She’d been searching for a long time for someone who would make her feel like she belonged with him, and at this moment, she finally felt like she’d found that person.

“I’m pretty boring, you know? At the age of five, my parents had abandoned me outside an orphanage. And it was the director of the orphanage who took me in. At the end of the first year, there was a dance. That’s when he confessed his love for me and we started dating. Our love was very romantic. I can’t deny the fact that we were very happy and so much in love for the first two years of our relationship.”

Thinking about her past, Lucia was lost in thought. On cold winter days, Jonah would make her hot water with brown sugar to soothe her menstrual cramps. On her birthday, he had made her happy by telling her how much he loved her under the fireworks-lit night sky. Every day after school, he prepared delicious meals for her, which they enjoyed together in the woods behind the school. She has many fond memories of him.

“What’s the matter?” asked Malcolm when he realized she was in a daze. He gently raised his hand and stroked her cheek.

“Oh, nothing. I was probably thinking too much about the past… Well, allow me to continue the story.” Lucia finally came back to reality and continued, “Those days of tender love lasted two whole years. Then came the last year of university. I was preparing for graduation, working in an internship program and writing my thesis. I had high hopes for the future. I had big dreams, and I was ambitious. It was because of Jonah that I gave up my dream of pursuing my career abroad. In the beginning, we phoned each other several times a day. As time went by, we phoned once a day, then once every two days, and gradually we switched to once a week. Sometimes we didn’t even talk, until I realized we hadn’t spoken in a very long time. Lucia then realized that Mina was the daughter of the CEO of Gomez Properties, the company Jonah had worked for after graduation. He had met Mina at the orientation event. Their busy final year of university had already made him a little indifferent towards Lucia. And Mina’s appearance had put an end to his seemingly endless vanity. Jonah was a poor man who had nothing, but he managed to attract a pretty woman.

He’d hidden from Mina that he had a girlfriend, and he’d also felt guilty about cheating on Lucia, but that guilt had quickly disappeared in the face of his l**t for money, power and status.
