It’s Love That Blinds Him – Chapter 73
Lucia and Malcolm hadn’t spoken since their argument that evening. Lucia was alone in the large apartment, Malcolm having not set foot there recently. She knew she was practically a prisoner in her own home. She was all alone in the apartment, but every time she opened the front door, the dedicated bodyguards standing outside respectfully asked her to come inside.
She had long since given up trying to leave. She wandered around the house aimlessly, like a restless spirit. The housekeeper came to clean and cook regularly, and Lucia ate when expected, even though she was not hungry at all. His meals passed in silence, like the rest of his day. As long as she didn’t leave the house, she could maintain an illusion of freedom. The bodyguards at the front door were on duty 24 hours a day, but they never set foot inside the apartment.
The sound of the phone ringing was deafening in the silence that Lucia had become so accustomed to. She picked up her phone and when she saw the caller’s name, she was filled with a warmth that she had almost given up on after all these days. She accepted the call and put the phone to her ear, but she didn’t say anything.
“What’s up? Are you sulking at home alone?” Lowell’s cheerful voice came from the other end of the line.
“Just a little,” Lucia said softly.
“Look at the starry sky. The city is more beautiful than ever. The red and yellow leaves are truly a spectacle, blown by the wind,” gushed Lowell, his voice filled with awe. “Is it really so pretty?”
Lucia looked out the window and saw only the dark sky that perfectly reflected his own fetid mood.
“Of course I do. Would you like to join me for a walk? I’ll take you to a place with the most enchanting starry sky in town,” Lowell suggested.
“Are you trying to get a married woman?” » Lucia teased, her mood already brightening from Lowell’s dizziness.
“Am I really?” » Lowell chuckled, eyebrows raised.
“Give me thirty minutes. You can pick me up from the same place you took me to last time. I want to see that beautiful sky that blew you away,” Lucia said firmly after thinking for a moment.
“Good. See you soon,” Lowell replied shortly.
Hanging up the phone, Lucia stood in front of the closed front door in deep thought. She checked the clock on the wall. Normally there would be only one guard there. outside at that time. Maybe she would have a chance to escape. A smirk lit up his face.
She placed a hand on her stomach and opened the door. The guard was about to ask her to go inside, but then noticed that she was holding her stomach and looked like she was in pain.
“Is everything okay, Mrs. Evans?” I’ll call a doctor right away,” he stammered, his face pale with fear. If anything happened to Lucia on his watch, he would be in a world of trouble.
” No need. Please prepare the car and drive me to the hospital instead,” Lucia said in a low voice, adding a few gasps of pain to be more believable.
“Of course…” The guard turned and left without a moment’s hesitation.
Lucia watched his retreating figure, smiling. She climbed the stairs three or four floors then called the elevator. A few minutes later, she came out of the front gate. By the time the security guard returned with the car, Lucia was long gone. He quickly realized that he had been tricked, so he ran to the elevator, planning to go see Lucia before she disappeared, but it was no use. The guard took out his phone and gathered the courage to report the incident.
At a fancy club in the city, Malcolm was sipping a glass of wine and there were already two empty bottles in front of him. He had been drinking for a while now, but his somber expression made Enoch fall silent.
“Malcolm…” Enoch finally decided to say something.
Malcolm hadn’t been back to his apartment in days. He had been staying at his other villa, one he rarely visited before. It was hard to tell what was on his mind, because his expression was a perfect blank. After dark, he would drag Enoch out for a drink in the club.
“Have you any news?” Malcolm asked suddenly.
“Well…I know who said those things to Lucia. The other person investigating this case is Sophia. It didn’t seem like she was asking about the Evans family for anything in particular. She did it just for fun. She found out some scattered information and connected the dots. She must have been the one who told Lucia.” Enoch’s frown deepened as he recounted what he had discovered.
He hadn’t expected Sophia to be the culprit. “How can a woman be interested in these things? According to locals, Sophia had been on digs in X City for two years.
“Are you sure it was her?” Apparently, Malcolm was also a little surprised by this revelation.
“Is there another method to break the curse?” He tried to hide his surprise and tried to appear indifferent.
“No,” Enoch replied firmly, shaking his head.
After discovering Sophia, he ordered his men to dig deeper and, sure enough, they found the stone tablet. And now Enoch knew everything Sophia had known except how to break the curse. The answer to this problem could not be found. The writing on the tablet was blurry and it was almost impossible to guess who had been the one to begin unraveling the curse in the past.
Enoch was certain that this was the key to breaking the curse, but it seemed that no scientist – at least those employed by the Evans family – could translate it. And the tablet being their only clue, it was difficult to go any further.
“Keep investigating. There must be something we’re missing. Maybe the person who solved part of the curse in the past is the key to solving this mystery,” Malcolm ordered coldly.
“I will,” Enoch agreed, even though he knew it wouldn’t be easy.
The Evans family had never given up on breaking this curse. They wanted to get rid of it once and for all, but no matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t end it. The curse had tormented the family for countless generations and no one had ever opposed it. Nobody wanted to take the risk.
Malcolm only had a year left and for a child to be conceived and born it would take ten months. He was running out of time. No wonder Wilma is so anxious.
“Since Grandma is adamant that this nightmare will end while she is still alive, the opportunity will present itself. There must be some clues that we missed before,” Malcolm said coldly, taking a sip. of his wine.
“What a load of shit! Why do we have to pay for the sins of our ancestor? This is bullshit,” Enoch shouted angrily.
Malcolm ignored her outburst, thinking about what Wilma had said. “This opportunity,” she insists, “we will have… is it related to me? What could it be? Why did so many of our ancestors fail to find the tablet, but it appeared in our time?’ These thoughts ran through his mind, but he found no answer.
His phone rang, bringing him back to reality. He looked at the screen and answered it without delay. He waited for the person on the other end to speak.
“Sir, I have some bad news. Mrs. Evans is missing…” It was extremely rare to hear Kaleb so anxious.
“What? Where was his guard? Did he leave his post?” Malcolm shouted at the speaker.
“Ms. Evans pretended to be sick and asked to be taken to the hospital. She sent the guard to get the car and she left,” Kaleb explained briefly. “Find her
. Check all security cameras. I’ll be there soon.” After giving his orders, Malcolm hung up the phone.
“What? Lucie is missing? That woman can’t stay put…” Enoch muttered in surprise, his mouth twitching.
He really admired Lucia’s spunk. If anyone managed to escape from under Malcolm’s nose, it would be her. Enoch glanced at Malcolm, whose face was a frown, and he couldn’t help but say a silent prayer for Lucia. He hoped she would spend the night in peace.
“Come with me,” Malcolm said to his brother and turned to leave.
Enoch obediently followed him and they both found the driver waiting for them outside the club. They got into the car and rushed to another stronghold of the Evans family, the largest in the city, where the family gathered most of their dark forces. But no one could tell by looking at him. It was the largest private hospital in the city, and of course, it was owned by the Evans family.
Malcolm was silent during their ride there. As soon as the car stopped, he got out and walked towards the building. He entered and began walking down the halls, until he reached the door to a seemingly ordinary room. He scanned his fingertip to unlock the door and entered, followed by Enoch. Once inside, Malcolm pressed a button and the door on the other side of the room opened. A spiral iron staircase was the only thing in sight and their leather shoes made crunching sounds as they began their descent.
Kaleb and his men waited in silence. When they saw him enter, they stood up and bowed their heads. Malcolm waved his hand, dismissing them. Then he sat down in the chair that Kaleb had prepared for him. He crossed his legs and stared coldly at the screen, showing a red dot moving across the city map.
“Sir, we have activated Ms. Evans’ tracker, the one in her ankle bracelet. Looks like she’s heading to the suburbs,” Kaleb informed him.
“The suburbs? Alone?” Malcolm’s face appeared to have been carved from stone.
“Judging by her speed, she’s in a car. Including the driver, there are at least two people in the vehicle,” Kaleb said, while looking at the moving dot on the monitor.
Enoch was stunned. No one said it out loud, but they were all thinking the same thing, that’s for sure. If Lucia had planned to commit suicide, she could have jumped from the roof of the apartment. No sane person would drive all the way to the suburbs just to kill themselves, so everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Since it was the middle of the night, someone had to come pick her up from the apartment. But who? What Kaleb meant was that maybe Lucia had gone off with a complete stranger or maybe she had an affair with another man.
“Find out what car she’s in,” Malcolm ordered coldly.
“Already done, sir. The license plate is wrong. It’s difficult to make out the driver’s face through the roadside cameras. If we drive towards them recklessly, they will be alerted,” Kaleb explained. “Keep a
check eye on her. And keep looking for the owner of this car. I want this matter resolved by tomorrow morning. Call me if anything happens,” Malcolm ordered and
stood up to leave. He put his hands in his pockets to hide his clenched fists. Indifference and cruelty were the only emotions appearing on his face. ‘Wildcat, you “Better remember what I told you. Don’t challenge me again and again.” He looked into the distance as if he could find her if he really tried, and he didn’t come to his senses for a long time.
“Malcolm…” Enoch, who had followed him outside, shouted.
“Let’s go inside,” Malcolm said indifferently.
The night seemed cold and haunted all of a sudden, the darkness threatening to swallow Malcolm up. , as his deepest nightmare threatened to come to life and doom his family once and for all.
