Chapter 37

Alisha picked up the tenth sandwich and popped it into her mouth without tasting it. She was so deep in thought that she hadn’t noticed that she had been eating for a while and Dylan was just putting plate after plate in front of her.

-Are you okay,” the wolf asked, refilling her glass.

-She shook her head, “You were saying something?

-Alisha, are you alright, although I know it might seem stupid to ask.

She nodded her head with a fake smile.

-Better, you don’t have to worry,” she took her hand and rubbed it, trying to shake off the constant discomfort and her confused memories that came and went. Even the feeling of being inside a body and not being in control of her own movements was still there and it made her uncomfortable. What she said. It terrified her and acting strong was taking its toll on her.

She missed when she was a simple human with no other worries than her company, which for the moment was stable and thanks to her right hand, she could direct it from afar. It would be some time before she could personally assume her place in the office.

She sighed internally. Perhaps it had been better to remain ignorant. She had always wanted to know where he came from, but now that he was revealing himself, she didn’t want to know about it, it was too murky. And no, he didn’t have the curiosity to pursue it further. Still, he couldn’t stop. Her life wasn’t even a part of her anymore. She wasn’t human now, she was a wolf with a responsibility to fulfil. More like two, first, to help the pack and second, to stand by her mate who had been more receptive than she thought he would be.

She squeezed her head tighter. It was starting to hurt a lot, maybe because of the bad nights.

-Dylan called out to her. She barely heard him, taking the other one with her, unable to contain the pain that was getting stronger and stronger.

-Alisha, listen, what’s wrong?

-My head,” she said with difficulty. It’s killing me. The noise is killing me.

The wolf made him nervous. Dealing with sick people was not nearly his speciality. And noise, what did he mean, his developing hearing wasn’t picking up any more than usual.

-Damn, good time to go,” Dylan clenched his fist. His alpha, beta, with two other wolves had had to leave after their little meeting to sort out the last of the issues in town before heading out of their lands to meet with the council and pick up Raice, who was returning from holiday from his job on the other side of the continent.

Christian had a point when he refused to leave her alone, but he was the beta and although he was already bonded he had responsibilities as such. Much to his chagrin he had left her after telling her a list of things she shouldn’t do and her almost kicking him out.

-Dakota entered the kitchen as the wolf found himself tossing his hair without finding any ideas.

-Commander, good timing.

The major looked at him and then at the woman who was trembling and clutching her head with a long-suffering expression. He walked to her side and touched her shoulder.

-Do you know what might be happening to you?

She denied vaguely. She could barely hear him over the pain that was getting sharper and sharper and wouldn’t let her lose consciousness.

Dylan call Louva, she’s at the back of the mansion half a mile away, I’ll take her upstairs.

The youngest assisted and ran out, changing shape. The commander grabbed Alisha by the arms and made her wrap her arms around his neck to carry her. She left without protest burying her head in his shoulder. She knew that if Christian saw the scene he could think anything. He would. He wasn’t a romantic, but he could be very possessive. This was an exception. Never touching someone else’s wife was his main rule.

He took her to Christian’s room and laid her on the bed where the smell of him enveloped her and calmed her instantly. She felt the pain in her head gradually subside and the noise dissipate slightly.

Alisha could finally breathe and opened her eyes just enough to see the wolf with whom she had a relationship as far away as possible.

-Louva is on her way, don’t move,” as gruff as ever.

Alisha turned on her side and settled herself.

-I know it doesn’t mean much to you, but thank you,” Dakota gave her a sidelong glance. The pain had subsided a little. It still wasn’t going away, though she’d found that smelling her partner’s pillow where she was lying made her symptoms lessen.

-You don’t have to thank me. You are a member of the pack, and as a member, you are part of my family.

Alisha smiled softly.

-So the ice block of the mansion has a tender side, too,” she said.

Dakota was about to utter one of her signature phrases when the door opened and the albino wolf came running in with a small bag.

He sat down on the bed and began to check it so quickly that he didn’t have time to do anything else.

Finally, he checked her pulse and furrowed his brow.

-Your she-wolf is uneasy, something external is upsetting her,” he concluded.

-You don’t have to tell me that, it’s the high-pitched, throbbing sound I hear that’s got her like this,” Alisha hugged the pillow again as the pain threatened to increase again.

-We didn’t hear anything,” Louva looked confused.

-I’m not lying,” she gasped, squinting her eyes.

-If Cristian were here everything would be easier for you. I know it’s convenient for couples to be together so they can share some inconvenience. We also have against us that we don’t know well what happens with your she-wolf and you, so anything that happens to you is very difficult to decipher, I only know that to take care of you the beta will have to be next to you or as close as possible.

-I don’t think he would dislike that fact.

He then sighed with relief as he felt the noise almost disappear all at once.

-I called Serguei. They should be back in a few minutes. They say they were able to sort everything out quickly. Christian wasn’t in very good shape either, he told me he seemed anxious and his wolf was refusing to budge, apparently sensing his discomfort.

-Louva picked up her bag and looked for a painkiller and gave it to him.

Half an hour later Christian opened the door and walked up the stairs two at a time to his room. Upon entering he found his partner lying on her back laughing next to the albino wolf. Dakota had long since left the room.

Louva watched the newcomer

-I think it’s time for me to go, my patient is much better.

She stood up and patted the blond’s shoulder before closing the door behind her.

The beta walked over to the bed and sat down, kissing her hand.

-You look better.

-She felt slightly before letting out a loud laugh as if none of the above had happened. He arched his eyebrow, the last thing he expected after being called and told that his partner was on the verge of collapse, was that she would make fun of him- Especially after hearing about the mud puddle- he turned sideways unable to resist laughing.

Cristián stood up in annoyance.

-My love, you and I will have to talk later, or rather, I don’t think we’ll talk much, I don’t like being laughed at,” he turned to walk towards the door, “Louva. Damn you, I’ll kill you.

At least he was relieved. His partner was safe. For the time being.

-Everything is ready,” a tall man dressed all in black stood behind the line of soldiers.

-Yes sir, the 01 experiments are ready for attack,” one of them replied.

-Perfect, as soon as the sun goes down we will attack the mansion.
