Chapter 38
Alisha had realised that the sun was going down when she’d settled down on the bed, leaving the comfort of Christian’s chest after spending some considerable time in conversation. Talking to the wolf had been more comforting than she had imagined, especially when he told her anecdotes about the members of the pack.
There were many he didn’t know as they were away from home on their respective missions although some were about to return, one of them was a Raice who had arrived with the alpha. His partner had warned him to stay away from him and if he had nothing to talk about, to just look at him. He was the one who had been able to tame his wolf the latest, so he was too unpredictable. Where he lived before, the wolves constantly goaded him into fights, but Serguei had taken him in and now he lived with them, improving his temper. He kept his mouth shut most of the time, though.
Alisha thought that something like that was Dakota. But to recap, the commander had given that same image and she was a sweetheart on the inside, too bad she was the only one who realised that.
-We should go downstairs, Serguie will think I’m monopolizing you,” Cristian also sat up and stroked her back.
-Monopolizing me,” she laughed, “not even in your best dreams.
Still she put on her sandals and stood up only to stand still turning to the window with a structural attention.
-Alisha,” the wolf called out to her but she didn’t answer.
The girl felt the earlier sound return, softer this time but it was present. Then she only had time to watch as Cristian’s arm wrapped around her waist and pulled her to the floor on top of her as the wall of the room splintered into a thousand pieces of concrete and wood that fell next to her.
The loud sound made them dizzy, yet they knew one thing. They were under attack.
A wolf identical to Cristian appeared, slamming the door and lunging at the black beast who leapt towards the pair, both of them falling into the void from the first floor. Blaren had interceded the attacker.
A few quick seconds passed before Alisha and Cristian realised what was happening and then looked at each other. The blond stood up quickly and grabbed her hand pulling her out of the room and ran down the hallway, hearing glass shattering in several places as well as piercing howls and low, unnatural howls.
-Dakota came out of nowhere to stand in front of them tearing his shirt and transforming into a wolf to intercept another of the beasts that was coming up the stairs tearing up the carpet with its claws.
Alisha opened her eyes and a small flashback came to her mind that faded as quickly as it came. Those invaders looked just like… the ones in the lab where she had been for many years. The dark, emaciated fur, the bodies taller than human and abnormally strong, with muscles marked on the skin despite being skinny and those heads that looked neither human nor wolf.
Christian pulled her one floor higher and pulled her into another room and padlocked the door. Unlike the others in the mansion, this one had no windows and the door was solid iron.
-They’re experiments,” her hands trembled as she paced back and forth, “they’re his experiments,” she sounded terrified, “he’s come for me, this is all my fault,” she said.
Cristian held her by the shoulders and saw the face he never thought he would see on her, one of total panic.
-Alisha, I need you to stay strong,” he told her in the calmest tone he could despite being so stressed by the situation and the hard fight that was happening down there, and how his companions would be, how his brother would be.
-It’s my fault Cristian, those experiments came because of me,” he said.
The wolf looked confused when the door clanged fiercely, cracking the wall around him.
-What the hell,” he exclaimed baring his teeth.
He stepped in front of Alisha and tearing his clothes, he transformed his body, bristling his back and preparing for combat. The door clanged three more times before falling to the ground bruised on the outside. Two beasts began to enter the room, how many must there be before Serguie and the others could not handle them? Worry for both his mate and his pack overwhelmed him. He lowered the front of his body in preparation for the attack.
One of the beasts darted in his direction and Cristian had to move quickly to the side to dodge it and push Alisha out of the way so she wouldn’t get hit as well. The beast turned and charged again. The wolf leapt for her arm and landed on her back, opening its mouth and burying its fangs in the back of her neck, but it only resulted in her jerking violently, almost knocking him off his feet.
-Christian,” Alisha watched the scene in alarm as she saw the other one move in to attack him.
The rage and helplessness of being protected like a damsel in distress overpowered her and she let the wolf inside her take full control of her body beginning the change.
Cristian felt his other aggressor reach behind him to strike him as his arm was thrust to the side under the white shadow of his partner’s wolf. The beast jerked but she didn’t let go, quite the opposite, with the arm still in her mouth she turned and twisted and yanked it out with a jerk from the force of her bite. The neat white fur was stained with b***d with a putrid smell that almost made her dizzy, but this was no time for that. Releasing the chunk of flesh, she moved quickly and grabbed the invader’s sparsely furred neck with difficulty and bit into the flesh as its body was clawed by the other black claw. Barely a second later, it fell to the ground, soaking the carpet beneath Alisha’s paws.
The she-wolf turned quickly and watched as Cristian finished off his assailant as well, leaving him on the floor. Her mate rushed over to her and licked the superficial wounds on his back as she inspected the male body for wounds that were concealed under his fur, finding one that went through his eye which she hoped would not leave a mark.
The noises below suddenly stopped and a scent Alisha recognised reached her nostrils. She couldn’t believe it. It couldn’t be. Her father was on the first floor.
