Chapter 26

"Ralph, I think we should wait with the announcement. This is Mable's day, and it got postponed already from your parents' business trip..."

It was a beautiful Saturday morning, they were scheduled for his brother Dale's oldest kid's birthday party. They both cherish the adorable little girl too much and Madison being the sweetest person, she didn't want Ralph to tell everyone about their dating status on her day. Though deep down she knows that it was not the only reason. Ralph looked at her as she sipped her morning coffee. They were still lying in bed cozying in each other's company. "Talk to me."

"Ralph..."

"No, Madison...talk to me, there's something you're not telling me."

There was, and she hated that she couldn't seem to keep a secret from him. Decades of being each other's closest ones tend to shed her facades and reveal her true feelings.

"I don't think I'm good enough for your family," Madison drinks her coffee nervously and waited for Ralph.

She has never told him before, he always thought that she was perfectly fine with his family and her confession startled him.

"Where is this coming from?"

"My family is not perfect, and your mom..." Madison sat up and put her cup on the side table.

"Maddie, spill."

Ralph was never one to be patient with any explanation. She knows he would eventually find out.

"My parents, they got married when my mother was pregnant with me. And to this day they never get along with each other," "Maddie, that's not..."

"Ralph, please..." she reminded him not to interrupt her.

"... I was really unhappy as a child and never understood why, they were always fighting and you have been my only escape."

"What does this have to do with us?" Ralph finally asked impatiently, he knows about her family already and was starting to get upset when she would think of his family in such a manner.

"I overheard your mom talked to your dad, about me, my family, about us." Madison took his hands and rubbed them lovingly.

"...your mom said that they were going to set you up with a woman within their social standings, telling your dad that you have been befriending me then thinking that we were getting too close."

"Madison, why are you even thinking about this? I'm not even their biological kid? you know this already." Ralph looked upset then put his cup aside.

"Ralph, you can't expect me to..."

He took her hands and stopped her words, and slowly kissing her knuckles.

"Maddie, baby I love you. If they can't be happy for me then I will be happy for us. But don't tell me to hide my feelings for you from the rest of the world."

She looked at him smiling and he pulled her in for his sweet loving kisses, which then turned hot in seconds.

The couple finally leaves the apartment just before lunchtime and arrived at Ralph's parents on time for Mable's birthday celebration.

"There they are, come here we've been waiting for my little brother and his cheeky best friend, come here Madison, it's been a while." Dale greeted the young couple with his warm hug and Mable was running towards Madison with her eyes beaming with happiness as the little girl saw the box of presents that she was carrying.

"Well hello there, so...birthday gift for the birthday girl?" Madison was on her knee leveling herself to the litter girl, while Madison was nodding her head in excitement with her signature megawatt making Madison giggled at her.

The very pink gift box was quickly shredded and she stopped when she was holding on to the pink polaroid camera box.

"I loooove you!" she hugged Madison tightly making everyone laugh.

"Thank you, Maddie, as always you're spoiling our little brat." Dale caressed Mable's hair then told Madison and Ralph to join everyone for the cake cutting.

Mable ran to her grandparents, Nancy and Alan. She was showing them the new gift that she got from Madison. Nancy smiled at her granddaughter and put the camera aside telling her to go to her mom and get ready to cut the cake. Both grandparents looked proud at their little granddaughter, both smiling at Dale's little family. While Larry and Tyler were busy chatting and flirting with three other women that Madison didn't recognize. Everyone was laughing at Dale who was adoring his kid. Amanda was right beside him looking beautifully pregnant while cutting the birthday cake for everyone.

An hour later Madison was feeling like a third wheel when Nancy was introducing Ralph to the three women who were talking to Tyler and Larry.

"Ralph my son, come here I'd like to introduce you to someone," Nancy said grabbing his arm and taking him to the beautiful brunette.

"Mom, please I'm here with Madison."

"Ralph please, don't be rude to our new guest."

The beautiful brunette smiled warmly at him, while he looked at Madison raising his brow knowing that she was walking away from him.

"Ralph it's okay, I'm just going to get some drinks for us," Madison said, smiling at him.

He was hesitant but then decided to get it over with. He chatted with the woman for a while, knowing exactly that it was his mom's doing, wanting to set him up with a woman.

"Jeez, see how subtle our mom's pushing the girl to Ralphy boy there?" Larry rests his back to the wall opening his conversation as Madison was watching her Ralph being introduced to another woman by his mom.

"Well...she is beautiful," Madison said with a sting in her heart knowing that the woman has the perfect body. She knows his type of women he usually goes for, and the brunette was one of them.

"Not as beautiful as you Madison." Tyler flirted and twirled her just like when they used to play princess and dragons when they were kids. Her laughs were heard throughout the room and Ralph was looking at his oldest brother in pure jealousy.

He was still trying to get out of the nagging conversation that his mom had just dragged him into and his brothers were already flirting with his Madison.

"Okay, nice meeting you...I'm going to get back to my girlfriend and let you girls enjoy the party. Mom, I'll talk to you later." He kissed his mom on the cheek and walk to Madison, he was upset already and they weren't even there that long. While he could hear his mom apologizes to the women for his attitude.

"Madison, can I talk to you?"

She looked at him knowing that he always gets jealous when his brothers flirted with her. Always has been since they were kids.

"Oh no, the prince is here to claim his beautiful princess."

"Guys come on, stop picking on your little brother." She took his hand and let him put it on her waist possessively. The brothers looked at the couple with suspicion. "Yep, we're officially a couple now," Ralph said smugly to his brothers then take her hand and kissed her knuckles. "Ralph..." she tried to warn him.

"Woah, congratulations dude. Seriously Maddie this boy has been following you like a lost puppy for years." Tyler patted Ralph on the shoulder like a proud brother.

But the joy didn't last long, not when their mother came up to them and asked what they were talking about. Though Larry was oblivious to his mother's antics and blurted out about Ralph and Madison's new dating status. "Owh, I thought you two....well, I didn't expect that...hmm...anyway, I'm going to the kitchen to get more food," his mother looked upset and Ralph immediately knows that she was not happy with the news.

"Maddie, wait here... let me talk to her," he kissed her on the lips chastely and she awkwardly smiled in front of his brothers who were looking like they're ready to roast them at any given moment. "Guys...not now, okay?" Ralph warned them knowingly.

"Dude, go...we got your back. We'll take care of your woman." Tyler told him in his big brotherly manner.

It was another half an hour, Madison was trying out the new camera with Mable while the women were back to talking to Tyler and Larry when Ralph stormed out of the kitchen looking furious. "Come Maddie we're done here, Mable baby... we'll visit you again later this week in the coffee shop okay? Madison and I have to leave right now."

"Uncle Ralph...is everything okay?" the little girl asked looking confused.

"Everything will be just fine Mable, Amanda... I'm sorry, but tell everyone we enjoyed the party, okay?" Madison kissed the little girl and hugged Amanda while Ralph talked briefly with Dale who already looked upset. Madison didn't know what happened, but she was sure that it had upsets Ralph to the point that he needed to storm out on his mother.

They were finally in his car and on their way back to their apartment when she asked.

"Ralph?"

"Not now baby, I just...not now..."
