Master of his heart (Max and Brielle) -
Chapter 1337
King stood in the truck, his eyes scanning the scenery outside, his voice calm and steady.
"You used me and the Lynch family to take down that base. We helped you destroy it. For years, those base folks have meddled in Brielle's life, and I never held it against you. Now you've been tricked by me once, isn't that enough to call it even?" Irene stood at the front of the truck, her position giving her a higher vantage point. She had been searching for a place to rest forever, but this barren land was far from what she desired.
She even found herself envying Kenzo's fate, wishing everything could go back to the beginning, to be buried at sea, dissolved into nothingness-a fitting end.
She unfastened the throwing knife from her wrist, examining it closely in front of her.
Jaired stood beside King, also looking out over the land.
They were about to cross the fence, having delayed for over a day and night, and nobody could afford to wait any longer.
King had been tracking Brielle's movements, noticing her circling the same spot, obviously stuck somewhere.
Though there was no immediate danger, there was no telling if her mental state would start to falter. They needed to reach her side quickly.
The truck slowly moved forward, inching closer to the fence.
Nearby, Bryan stood watch in a guard tower.
As the truck drew nearer, he squinted, ready to command his men to fire, but froze upon locking eyes with the woman at the forefront of the vehicle. Familiar conversations flooded his mind.
"Boss, you sure you want me to go?"
"You're defying my orders?"
"001 would never dare."
Gazing at that silhouette, Bryan felt his body heat up. Was he falling ill?
His cheeks flushed with heat, spreading down to his neck.
His men awaited his command, but seeing him stunned in place, face flushed, they were taken aback.
"Bryan?"
Snapping back to reality, Bryan felt every cell in his body clamoring, buzzing with excitement.
"Bryan, you're all flushed. Got a fever?"
Bryan quickly turned away, not wanting his unusual state to be seen. He even placed a hand over his wildly beating heart.
Damn it, what was happening with his heart? It felt as though it was about to leap out of his throat.
How bizarre.
How eerie.
"Bryan, are we still firing? They're about to breach."
The concern was evident on the speaker's face. They all followed Bryan's lead, but with him seemingly bewitched, they were at a loss, forced to watch the approaching trucks helplessly. FindNovel
"I don't know."
Bryan's honesty was palpable. After a minute, he gestured for a weapon.
"Hand me a bow and arrow."
Some of the local tribes still preserved ancient hunting traditions, and archery was their forte.
The bow and arrow were passed to him, and Bryan took aim, firing at Irene.
Irene sensed a whooshing sound and initially mistook it for a bullet, but the next moment, an arrow lodged into the ground beside her. Narrowing her eyes, she looked towards the guard tower.
She had been expecting gunfire,
aware of the ambush, and had prepared thoroughly, thinking they would encounter a fierce battle just outside the fence. Yet, it wasn't until now that a single arrow was shot.
Not a bullet, but an arrow.
It felt like a taunt.
How interesting.

Now, with the distance between them shortened, Irene could see the person atop the tower. If not for his face being partially obscured, she might have mistaken him forJaired.
But Jaired had been by her side the whole time, on this very truck, so that man couldn't be Jaired. Irene's pupils contracted as she watched him lower the bow, resting his elbow, gazing down at her.
Ignoring the flush on his face, he did carry an air of authority.
Irene frowned slightly, noting his lack of further action, and turned to King.
"This fence doesn't look too hard to cross. Why did you guys delay so much?"
King remained silent, simply lifting his gaze to the man above.
After a while, he glanced towards Jaired, who had his gun aimed at the figure but hadn't fired.
On the tower, Bryan's companion eventually caught on.
Was he smitten with the woman on the other side?
Is that why he hesitated?
He called out.
"Hey, miss, the one in the tank top and black pants, our boss seems to have taken a fancy to you. If you all want to leave unscathed, you might want to come up here."
Irene couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity. She had her fair share of men, sure, but she wasn't just anyone's for the taking.
The very thought of this local leader, in such a desolate place, thinking he could have her?
In his dreams!
