Mating the Female Alpha -
Chapter 97 – Caleb came to get me.
Bernice's POV
I can't remember the last time I slept that well; it's been ages. As I opened my eyes, the sun shining through the window nearly blinded me. I winced, feeling a small headache brewing in my temple. I sat up in bed, staring around the fairly plane room. This was another smaller pack so the packhouse was also on the smaller side.
I could smell coffee brewing from downstairs, causing my mouth to water. I hadn't had coffee since before I was pregnant.
Wait.
Oh, my goddess!
I look down at my bed and saw that it was empty.
My pup was gone.
With a racing heart, I slid out of bed quickly and ran out of the room. I couldn't get downstairs fast enough. Someone had taken my pup and they were going to pay for this.
I didn't give anybody permission to...
"Caleb?" I gasped as I entered the kitchen.
Caleb sat at the kitchen with a plate of breakfast, coffee, and my pup in his arms. I stared at him with such disbelief that he broke out into a grin.
"I didn't want to wake you," he said. "I figured I'd take him off your hands. Did you seriously not name him?"
"Caleb..." I said again, tears welling up in my eyes.
"I've missed you, big sis," he says as he stands to his feet.
I ran to him quickly, wrapping my arms tightly around hm as tears fell from my eyes. I couldn't believe that my brother was standing before me. "How did you get here?" I cried into him.
He laughed.
"I ran," he said with a shrug. "The Beta called dad."
I frowned, pulling away from him.
"Dad knows I'm here? What did he say?"
Caleb rolled his eyes.
"He was too drunk to comprehend anything," Caleb admitted.
"It's that bad?"
He managed a nod before looking down at the small pup in his arms; I could see the life shining in his eyes and a small smile playing at his lips.
"I can't believe I'm an uncle. Never thought that would happen," he breathed.
"You and me both," I admitted. "But here is. My no named pup."
"You'll come up with something," he assured me.
"I haven't really had a lot of time to think about it... with everything going on. But I also really want to name him Landry..." I paused for a moment as my eyes widened. "Speaking of Landry... where is he?" I asked, I looked around briefly, half expecting him to pop up out of nowhere.
"He's back at the palace. Jessie has a thing tonight that he promised he would attend. He has men searching each pack for you. They haven't gotten to this one yet, but I'll let them know you've been found." "What's going on with Jessie?"
"She was named 'best-looking she-wolf in the kingdom,"" Caleb said with another eye roll. "Kind of typical I suppose. But not surprising."
I laughed; it certainly wasn't surprising. Jessie was gorgeous and incredibly popular around the kingdom. I was happy that she was getting that recognition.
I assumed they were having some kind of ceremony for her; I wanted to go and surprise her, but then the thought of Alaric popped into my head, and I felt my soul leaving my body. It still wasn't safe... unless it was and that's why Caleb was standing before me.
"Alaric?" Was all I managed to ask.
Caleb gave me a smirk.
"Your brother got rid of him for you," he said with a wink.
I couldn't help the gasp that escaped my lips.
"What? You?"
"Don't look so surprised," he said with a fake offended look on his face. "Yes, me."
"How?"
"Well, honestly, I couldn't have done it without Landry's distraction. But I found this dagger in Alaric's layer and I knew that was what I needed to use to kill him." "You stabbed him?"
He nodded.
"In the stomach and then again in the chest. But it was the strangest thing because all of his men dropped dead as well with the same puncture wounds. I didn't even touch them. Landry thinks that Alaric had linked himself to his men so that if he dies, so do they. But I'm not sure why he would do something like that..."
I thought back to Talia and how she randomly died in the forest with those similar wounds. At the time, I had no idea how it happened. I thought it was an invisible force of some kind, but now I'm realizing it was because she was also linked to Alaric.
She had mentioned that Alaric was powerful, and he always gets what he wants.
"I'm also not sure if that includes his spies too..." Caleb continued.
"It does," I say, meeting his eyes. "It happened to Talia."
"Talia was here?” Caleb asked with wide eyes.
"It's a long story," I say with a frown, looking down at my pup. "But she's gone now, and we are safe."
He sighed in relief.
"That's good," he breathed. "Why would he link himself to his men though? You'd think that he'd want them to keep fighting even after he dies."
"Maybe that's how he got so many followers. He threatened their lives; nobody dared to touch him because if they did, then they would all suffer. If someone tried to kill him, they would all die."
"Oh, yeah that makes sense," Caleb agreed with a nod. "At least now we don't have to worry about his followers."
My pup stirred in Caleb's arms uncomfortably.
"He's probably hungry," I say, taking him from Caleb and cradling him my forearm.
"Jessie's ceremony is in an hour. We can still make it if you want to surprise them," Caleb said with a grin.
"I would like that very much," I say in return.
"You should eat something first," the kitchen worker said from the sink. I hadn't realized she was standing there; I wondered how much of that she heads. I gave her a kind smile and nodded; I was starving, and that coffee smelled so good. Once I finished eating and feeding Caleb, I changed his diaper and got our things together.
Before we were able to leave, Beta Donny stopped up at the doorway.
"Thanks for letting me rest here, Donny," I say to him with a kind smile.
"No worries," he said, rubbing his hand behind his neck. "I'm glad I could be of help. If you see my Alpha, can you tell him the pack misses him? He hasn't been around in a while."
"Oh yes, he's been out searching for Bernice; Landry's request. None of the Alphas have slept properly in months. They'll be sent home soon," Caleb assured Donny.
Donny smiled; I could see the tiredness on his face. Running a pack wasn't easy to work; especially when you are a Beta.
"Thanks," he said in return.
On that note, we turned and left. It was time we went home.
...
Landry's POV
There had to be hundreds of wolves at the ceremony. There was also loud music; it was a little too loud for Landry's taste, but he was here to honor his sister as promised.
He could already see Jessie on stage, ready to take her reward. She had a shimmering gold dress that outshined most other she-wolves. Jessie always liked to make an impression. Landry had to admit that he was proud of his sister; he was glad to be able to support her, even when he still hasn't found Bernice.
There has been no word from any of his men and he was beginning to grow apprehensive that she would even want to return.
"I feel her..." his wolf breathed from within him.
A furrowed his brows together, unsure of what his wolf meant, and then he smelled the delicious scent of strawberry milk, making his mouth water.
Bernice was here.
His wolf tugged him through the crowd, nearly losing control. He was anxious to get to her; it was an odd feeling because has never been this anxious before. He wondered what it meant.
Then, his wolf paused, causing Landry to pause. Through the crowd, they could see the rays of moonlight shining down and dancing off fair skin of Bernice.
His wolf said in a soft and husky tone, "Our mate..."
