My Jealous Alpha Stepbrother -
Chapter 169
Michelle
Kit and I are sunbathing on our matching towels from one of the stores in the magical town of Sunny Magic. We went there earlier to buy picnic food and other stuff, and now, it’s time to relax and enjoy the summer.
I adjust the pillow made of a t-shirt behind my head, and then I close my eyes. A parasol has been set up between us to keep my face from getting burned. Demons apparently don’t have that problem and Kit isn’t tanning anyway. He is studying the waves with curious eyes.
“Do you think demons are allowed in the water?” He asks.
I glance up at him, squinting at the bright sun. “Why wouldn’t they be?”
He digs his purple feet into the sand, and looks down at them with a sad smile. “Most people are scared of us, and can sniff us out even if we are in human form.”
I turn around to eye the twenty-something girls staring at Kit with heart-shaped eyes and snort. I’m a little bit jealous, but Kit’s self-confidence is cracking, so it’s my duty to try and strengthen it for him.
I take a deep breath. “I don’t think the people at this beach are scared of you. You… you have an entire fan club of girls checking you out, if you haven’t noticed that already.”
Kit looks behind him, eyes filled with surprise when a group of nymph waves at him and laughs. He doesn’t return the wave. Those yellow eyes travel back to me instead.
I frown at the attention. By now, I’m sure he can tell that I’m jealous and his smirk is all the confirmation I need. He doesn’t tease me about it, though.
“Do you want to go for a swim?”
I wrinkle my nose and look at the blue, dazzling water. “Isn’t it awfully cold in the ocean?”
Kit chuckles, and I glare at him.
“What?”
He grins. “I didn’t realize you were a chickenshit.”
I blink at him, again and again before my cheeks heat up to a billion degrees. “I’m not a chickenshit,” I mumble back, but Kit is already up on his feet.
He is walking towards the ocean and turns around a few times, waving for me to follow him. “You coming, or what?”
I roll my eyes, but I get up and run after him. It’s too late to go back now. I only hope the water isn’t too cold…
“If I come down with a cold I hope you will take responsibility.”
“Responsibility?” Kit asks over his shoulder as we wade deeper into the water. I’m anticipating the coldness, feeling goosebumps prickle over my arms.
“Yeah… if I get a cold, I hope you will be there to warm me up like my personal heater.”
His smile is soft. “Of course.”
He turns his back toward me, and it’s a perfect opportunity for me to push him into the water.
I do.
All of my strength is added into a little push and Kit falls face first into the ocean and I shriek with laughter as I watch him go down under the surface.
“Got you!” I shout.
Kit comes up with a splash, and he is laughing when he wipes the water out of those yellow eyes.
“You little shithead!”
He is on me in a second and his hands grip my sides before throwing me over his shoulder. I cry out and laugh so hard that my sides are hurting.
“Let go of me, you brute!”
“Let go?” He repeats in amusement. “Okay!”
He tosses me in the ice cold water, and I sink down like a rock. The sun is far above me, and I reach for it, gasping when I break through the water surface. Kit is belting out laughter and my lips form a big smile too.
I lift my chin, panting from the action. “I deserved that, huh?”
“You did.”
Kit’s eyes are filled with glee as he peers down at me. I think he is gorgeous. There are laughing lines around his mouth and his wet, dark lashes hang heavy over his eyes that are gazing deeply into mine. His dark hair is tousled and he uses a hand to slick it back, which somehow brings more attention to his handsome square jaw.
I dumbly smile at him, but then clear my throat when it’s obvious that I’m staring. I swallow thickly, and try to calm my breathing. “So… what are you thinking about?”
He blinks at me innocently. “I’m thinking that you look cute when you’re out of breath.”
I scowl. “I’m not out of breath! I’m just… uhh… you took me by surprise, is all!”
“Right,” Kit grins. “Because it would be terrible for the little Alpha to admit she is tired.”
My eyes narrow. Does he really think he will get away with this sort of teasing?
I’m about to deliver Kit a nice comeback, but we both turn our heads to the sound of screaming coming from the beach. Everyone is leaving, but some are pointing at the ocean and that’s when I see it—a black giant squid demon!
I gasp, and Kit turns around and looks at me with the exact same expression of shock.
“What?” He asks.
“That’s one of those…” I clear my throat, staring at the massive demon that just surfaced and is now making a straight line towards us. “That’s one of those shadow demons! We have to defeat it!”
Kit tilts his head, and a dark smile spreads over his lips. Even his eyes seem to intensify in their glow. “Just say the word, and I will have it annihilated. Give me the order to kill.”
I can’t help but shudder. I haven’t given Kit an order since we formed the contract between us, and even though he is the one telling me to give it, I’m hesitating.
I wet my lips. “A-are you sure?”
“Yes.”
I take a deep breath. “Kit, I order you to kill that demon under the agreement of our contract.”
Immediately, his whole body seems to pulsate with purpose, and my body prickles with goosebumps. Kit is growing in size, and his skin is changing. Instead of a normal demon, he is changing into a shadow creature.
Fear takes hold of my throat, and Kit laughs in a voice much deeper than before. “To defeat the shadow creatures with precision, you have to turn into one of them.”
My eyes almost bulge out of their sockets as I watch Kit turn into something that can easily challenge the demon squid. His very pores seem to ooze death, and I watch him turn around, eyeing the squid demon.
“Time for some fun.”
With that, Kit charges forward with his large, leather-clad wings opening to give him a burst of speed. I have to close my eyes and bury my feet in the sand so as not to be blown away by the sheer force that is my boyfriend.
My teeth chatter as the wind howls in my ears, my legs shake, and my body screams for me to run.
The sand is shifting under my feet, yet I’m not moving. I stand rooted to the spot, watching Kit use purple and blue fire to shoot at the screeching squid. It can’t do anything in return, not when Kit’s tail changes its shape into a harpoon to pierce it through its one, gigantic eye.
“Oh wow…” a nymph behind me on the beach whispers. She is standing with her three friends. “Are you watching this?”
“Yeah…” her friend whispers. “That is a high-class demon right there.”
“I’ve heard it’s the son of the demon king.”
Pride makes my chest swell. Kit is truly admirable… from far away. Up close? I’m not sure I would be able to handle that.
Everything about him, from his size and the sheer volume of his voice is enough to force me into submission. Another shudder passes down my spine as I look at him. I guess this is the difference between werewolves and demons: a demon is its own army. It doesn’t need anyone else to fight.
As expected, it doesn’t take long before Kit has finished the demon, and everyone on the beach shrieks and hurries to their cars, horses or whatever they came with as the demon’s gaze flickers over the beach.
The water barely even reaches his knees, yet he is standing in the deep bank of it. I’m expecting him to change back into his usual form and beam at me with his usual grin. But instead, I see his eyes zero in on someone on a unicorn float.
It’s a little kid that giggles as Kit comes closer. At first, everything looks serene and peaceful, but before I know it, Kit has picked up the unicorn float like a donut. His jaws open and I scream at the top of my lungs.
Has he lost himself to his powers?!
“Kit, no! I order you to put her down!”
