Hearing this, my breathing sped up.

No wonder Mr. Clark had avoided me the last time I went to Anne's school. Now that I think about it, everything made sense.

Josiah had planned everything from the start. His identity and name, and perhaps even his appearance, had been modified so that he could hide around Anne.

No one was better at deceiving people than him.

Without hesitating, I turned around and rushed upstairs. As I walked, I reminded Aaron, "I'll have the principal arrange things for me tomorrow."

Josiah was way too dangerous. I couldn't let Anne be around him for another moment.

When I entered her room, she was already lying in bed. Maria was telling her a story with a book in her hand.

"Let me do it, Maria."

I took the storybook from her and sat down next to Anne's bed.

The tears on Anne's face had been wiped away as she leaned against the pillow, but her large eyes were still wet from tears and reflected the lights in her room. They sparkled as she looked at me.

"Mom, can I not transfer schools?" Anne asked with a pout on her face.

Looking at her heartbroken face, I couldn't bear to let her know the truth.

Reaching out my hand to pat her head, I changed the subject, "Anne, if Uncle and I were gone, and you were left all alone, would you be happy?"

"Why wouldn't you be here?" Anne blinked with curiosity plastered all over her face.

"Well..." I pretended to think for a moment, and answered after a while, "Because your current school is very far away from home. Uncle and I have to walk a very long way before we can take you home. But now, there are some bad people who want to hurt us. If you continue going to that school, we will probably get hurt, or something even worse might happen. If so, we'll never be able to see you again. That's why we won't be around."

Hearing this, her cheeks bulged as she sobbed. She climbed out of the quilt, held my arm, and refused to let go. "Mom! I don't want you and Uncle to go away! I don't want those bad people to hurt you! I'l transfer to another school. Don't leave me, please..."

Anne was so sad, and I felt uncomfortable as well, but I had no other choice. This white lie would help her avoid Josiah, so I had to stick with it.

I patted her gently on her back and comforted her, "Don't be afraid. You're my eldest daughter. You have to take care of your siblings in the future. You can't cry all the time."

When I mentioned her younger brother and sister, she suddenly raised her head and stretched out her hand to wipe away her tears and snot on her face. She suddenly looked much more grown-up. "I won't cry. I want to protect my mother, my little brother, and my little sister! Mom, please ask Uncle to help me transfer to another school. I can make new friends!"

All of a sudden, Anne seemed so much more sensible.

After coming back from the chemical plant, it took a long time for her own family to get close to Anne, much less other people.

I began to wonder if the changes in Anne had anything to do with Josiah.

However, this thought merely lingered in my mind for a split second, and I immediately ended the thought.

This conspiracy had gone on for more than ten years and almost killed Anne. How could he be a good influence on her?
