My Pretty Sweetheart (Arianna) -
Chapter 1815
I was considering whether I should wait for Hendrix to be done with whatever he was occupied with and call him again, but then my phone vibrated.
It was a WhatsApp text from Hendrix, "Honey, I'll take care of myself. Don't worry."
I smiled subtly. Since he didn't forget to joke around during such a crucial situation, he was probably fine.
I put my phone down and went to the nursery to check on my two children. When I passed by Anne's bedroom, the door was left ajar and a light shone out of the gap. Then, I walked in. Anne was still awake at this time of the night. The computer screen was on, and there she was, sitting in front of the monitor, alone, with her head hung low. I couldn't tell what she was up to.
The last time I came across this similar situation was when Estella approached Anne. Back then, in the company, I dispatched Estella to the logistics department and made her suffer a whole lot. Wasn't that enough for her to give up on her evil intentions?
I slowed down and walked behind Anne skeptically to take a look. It turned out that she was actually doing her homework, and on the computer screen was a mathematics exercise sheet for fourth graders. I was a little taken aback. The school term had just begun, and yet Anne was already learning at such a level?
After looking at this for a while, I noticed her fourth grade homework exercises on the table as well. She was so focused on her work that she hadn't noticed me.
It was truly unexpected for such a small child to be this hard-working.
Taking a deep breath, I walked over to her right and made sure that she could see me. Then, I bent over and slung my arm over her shoulder while asking softly, "What are you doing, Anne?"
"Mom!" Anne exclaimed and beamed when she saw me. She moved her hands away to reveal the contents of the exercise book and proudly said, "Mathematics is so interesting. Mr. Clark praised me for being smart, so he arranged some exercises for me. I'm doing them now!"
"Is that so..." I muttered.
I picked up the book with a grin and casually flipped through it. There was nothing special about it. But judging from the content, all her answers were correct, even though they were the most basic of mathematical calculations.
She pursed her lips together and beamed. She was very pleased.
Monique used to be like this too when she was still alive. She was especially good with numbers, so after she became the boss, she feasted on the taste of accountancy. Anne had talent in this aspect as well, she was definitely following Monique's footsteps.
This was also one of the ways that proved Monique's existence in this world.
After placing her homework back to its original place, I stretched out my arm and stroked Anne's head. I smiled while encouraging her, "Anne, you really are amazing. I'm so proud of you, but you're still young and it's a crucial period for you to grow. Go to sleep now, okay?"
Hearing this, her small face pulled down into a frown. She then looked at the work on the table and back at me. Anne seemed a little hesitant, but she finally chose to listen to me. She pulled her lips into a grin and set the pen down while cheering happily, "Alright, I will! Read me a bedtime story, Mom!"
This young child was working so hard that I couldn't refuse her request, and read her two whole fairy tales...
The very next day.
As soon as I dropped Anne off at school, I received a call from Valerie.
"Arianna, are you free tonight?" she asked.
I glanced at the school gates and saw Josiah bursting out of the school building and playing with Anne at the entrance. I kept my eyes on them and replied absent-mindedly, "Probably, what's the matter?" "Since you are, you should pay a visit to the Moore Family tonight and bring Anne along with you. Both your father and I are starting to miss her," Valerie added.
Ever since I rejected Pedro's offer to give his shares to the children, the both of them rarely showed up. They probably felt guilty and assumed that I was intentionally avoiding them.
