But it missed. A beast's instincts would always be faster than that of a human's.

The snake dodged Tina's attack. It slithered away and then poised itself for its next attack. It looked angered with its head pointing towards Dahlia who had just dodged away from it. These aggressive animals were way scarier when they weren't moving at all.

It was about to bite Dahlia. I picked up the branch I saw on the ground and aimed for the snake with its sharp edge. I stabbed into the snake's head without a moment to lose. Fortunately, all it took was one strike. The branch rooted the snake in place and stopped it from moving.

Its head and tail were still wiggling in place.

Dahlia then gradually calmed down from her fit of anger and shock.

She picked up the stone Tina had used and threw it at the green snake.

After being hit on the head, the snake seemed to have lost consciousness for a moment. Then, Dahlia smashed the snake's head mercilessly with another rock, killing it.

Blood splattered everywhere. She only stopped after a long while.

When she looked at the snake again, its head had been pounded into a meaty pulp.

The other girls looked at her, their faces pale. Naomi swallowed a breath and said, "Let's go, it's getting late. We should move on."

Along the way, we picked up a lot of mushrooms. The only good thing about being in these deep mountains and forests was that everything grew in soil - gifts from Mother Nature herself. Whenever we came across a clear river, we could eat and drink. We wouldn't starve to death, at least.

After trekking for a long time, we saw a red fruit on a small rocky hill, which looked similar to a lychee.

"Is that lychee?" Naomi asked. We had been walking for a long time, and her face was red and sweaty.

Tina climbed up, picked a few and threw them on the ground. "These wild ones aren't very sweet, but they can be eaten. Let's pick all of it and eat them while we trek."

It was a good idea. Meanwhile, Dahlia was praying again. Perhaps the mushrooms had filled her up along the way and she wasn't hungry.

She was probably unwilling to make the climb to pick the fruits, so she chose to sat aside, meditated and chanted instead.

Rainie was a bit of a klutz. She was short and fat, so climbing up was difficult for her.

After trying and failing several times, she gave up. She could only wait on the ground below to pick up the fruit that we threw down. Naomi clearly liked to eat - she was happily doing as she picked the fruits.

Tina gave us a good-natured reminder, "Mind your step. Be careful and look out for other snakes."

"Ah!" Naomi suddenly let out a scream. She stuck a lychee into her mouth and said, "You scared the hell out of me. Dang, I need to chill out."

Tina was quiet. She threw the fruits to Rainie, and looked as she clumsily picked them up from the ground.

Dahlia sat in her corner, meditating. Naomi was left speechless looking at her. "How is that woman still alive? Look at her praying and chanting. Where was her mercy when she killed that snake?"

Tina shrugged. "People forget God in troubled times. Churches are full when times are good. I wonder if that's because of God, or because of people." "What are you going on about? Let's hurry up and pick these!" I interrupted their conversation.

God was real, but it was humans who believed in God. How could a human make judgement on that?

Their beliefs were messed up.

To ensure that we had enough food, we almost picked the tree clean, and even brought unripe fruits along with us.

Thankfully, that aggressive snake was the only creature we've had to fight our way through so far. Although the road ahead was bumpy, it was nice that we didn't encounter anything else that could put our lives at stake.

We had water, fruits, as well as some raw mushrooms. We had drawn the long end of the stick along the road we'd been on.
