Ernest's joke made me laugh. It was a rare glimpse into his humorous side. Though it was just a joke, it was unexpected to encounter such a concept in life. Life is unpredictable; no one knows what the future holds. We are all dark horses, with our past not yet cemented.

Ernest was recovering, Deborah was recovering, and I didn't have the energy to care for both. So, I arranged for nurses for them. Ernest flat-out refused. He claimed he was perfectly capable of moving around and taking care of himself, insisting he didn't need any help. I knew he wasn't comfortable with strangers around, but his refusal also meant I couldn't be there for him. Men can be just as complicated as women, sometimes even more.

Sugar Daddy?!

Surprisingly, he seemed to be getting clingy, showing a vulnerable side I rarely saw. "I'm going to check on Susie. She must be heartbroken after finding out Mack's real intentions," I tried to comfort him. "She's grown up; she can handle her emotional issues. If a guy can knock her down, she's way too fragile," Ernest's words had a double meaning. He was speaking about Susie, but also about me.

At that moment, we were squeezed together on a small hospital bed, my foot playfully entwined with his. "After surviving your abandonment and the trials of life and death, I must be pretty strong, right?" He gently kissed my hand, "Yeah, my Licia, the invincible little monster." "Monster? Why am I a monster now?" I protested, slightly annoyed.

It made me sound like a petulant teenager, but when you're cherished by the one you love, you can be a girl at heart even at eighty. Ernest chuckled, "Yes, a little monster, the only one who can defeat me." There are countless endearments between lovers, and I adored this one from Ernest.

I playfully bit his lip, and he let out a soft grunt, "Why do you keep biting me?" Ever since our 'post-mortem' reunion, biting him had become a habit, sometimes wishing I could swallow him whole so I wouldn't have to live in fear. "Monsters eat people, don't they?" I smirked, observing the bite mark Left on his lip. Ernest's Adam's apple bobbed, "Wait until I'm better, then I'll let you "eat"." Me, "......"

"Licia, go do your thing. Have fun, eat well, don't worry about me," he tried to sound nonchalant, not wanting to be a burden. Just as I was about to argue, he added, "Plus... someone is supposed to visit me soon." My nerves tensed instantly, sensing an underlying storm. I knew exactly who he was referring to and couldn't help feeling anxious, "Wouldn't that be dangerous?"

"If they really wanted me dead, the accident wouldn't have left me alive," Ernest's words made me realize I hadn't considered this angle. "Why wouldn't be want you dead? If he suspects you're Ernest, wouldn't it be simpler to just eliminate the threat?" My curiosity was piqued. Ernest laughed, "Thought you'd never catch on." His words weren't hurtful, but they carried a mocking tone.

I playfully nudged him again, "Seems like your identity as Phipps isn't so straightforward." Ernest's smile faded, "That's true. Do you want to know?" His question implied it wasn't something he could easily share, but if I insisted, he wouldn't keep me in the dark. I shook my head, "As long as you're safe, that's all I care about. Whatever they want from you, or whatever you're up to, I'm not concerned."

Ernest, too, was under pressure, hiding behind another identity, even altering his personality and voice, which showed how perilous his mission was. And where exactly was this Phipps person he was impersonating?
