One More Chance
Chapter 115: The atmosphere filled with tension

~~~Don't leave me in all this pain. Don't leave me out in the rain. Come back and bring back my life. Come and take these tears away. I need your arms to hold me now. The nights are so unkind. Bring back those nights that I held you beside me. Take back the sad word goodbye. Bring back the joy to my life. Un-break my heart, say you'll love me again~~~
-Toni Braxton-
"Why do you ask? I'm going to buy some fruits and something to eat for the patient." I replied, not minding that he's still holding my arm.
"Let me go with you." And he stood up.
"Huh? Y-You don't have to come with me, I can walk and buy on my own. I'm no longer a kid and--- you can now take your hand off me." I looked at his hand that was comfortably holding my arm.
"Oops!" He chuckled. "Yup, I know you're no longer a kid, but FYI, I'm not going with you to escort you." I raised an eyebrow, waiting for his next words. "I'm starving, so I also need to find the nearest restaurant to eat." And the smile playing on his lips turned into a smirk. "Tss! Whatever!" I said rolling my eyes before leaving him laughing in his spot.
SAM's POV:
"Agh!"
I tried to open my eyes but was immediately dazzled by the light that I don't know where it was coming from, either from the sun because my mother opened the curtains again which she always does every morning or she just turned on the lights in my room... or maybe she did both. She simultaneously turned on the lights and the curtains of the glass door to the terrace.
"Mom, leave the curtains closed please..." I mumbled softly, trying to ignore the lights peeking through my eyelids.
"Sam..."
But I frowned when I heard the voice of my brother and my best friend at the same time.
"Oh, thank God, you're awake now!" Jack's smiling face was the first to appear in front of me and next to her was my brother and if I wasn't just confused about the surprised expression on their face, I would have asked them why they were both standing next to my bed at early in the morning.
I was about to ask them about their worried faces when Luke suddenly appeared in my room having the same expression.
"Sam,"
-'What the hell....'-
"How are you feeling?" I turned to Jack when she spoke. Deep in my head, I wondered if that question belonged to me, but when our eyes met, I realized it was mine.
"W-Why are you guys here? What are you doing here?" I ignored her question as I could no longer hold the confusion growing in my head.
"Oh, my!" She and Dale shared glances before turning to me. "Don't you remember what happened?"
"What do you mean if I---" And my eyes started wandering around the room and there I saw a lot of things that you can only see inside the hospital.
I frowned upon looking down at my legs. The dress I was wearing. The IV was inserted into my left hand. The oxygen tank. The casts that covered one of my feet and that was I when remembered what happened.
"Huh!" My hand automatically covered my mouth in shock as I suddenly remembered everything. I went to the WIA-Com building and talked to Luke about what I had just discovered. We also argued about the divorce papers. He followed me when I ran into the street, waiting for the cab and because I wasn't in myself at that moment, I didn't notice that the traffic lights were still counting to change from green to yellow. Then I froze when a red motorcycle suddenly came out of nowhere and it was too late to move because it has already hit me.
"It's okay, you're okay now." Dale patted me on the shoulder.
"Oh, my God!" I uttered as fear instantly crept into me. "H-How long I've been...?" I stopped as I found it hard to continue the question in my head. "How long have you been here? Is that what you wanted to ask?" Jack finished what I was supposed to ask and I nodded. "You've only been---"
But she was interrupted when I realized the casts covered my left leg.
"My leg!" I started to panic but everyone was there to comfort me.
"Hey, don't worry, it would be fine. You will have to wait four to twelve weeks, do some therapies and it will be back to normal again." Jack took my hand as she gave me a reassuring smile.
Between our conversation, a doctor walked into the room and behind him was Luke whom I hadn't noticed exiting the room earlier. Our eyes met and even though he had obvious signs of concern, I ignored him. I couldn't find myself being affected by that rare emotion written all over his face.
After the doctor explained the
procedure they did during the operation and the instructions I must follow to help my injury recover faster, I finally felt relieved He said was one of the patients who must be called lucky that after being hit by a vehicle or being involved in a road accident, I got only a few scratches and minor injuries. He's right. Maybe my guardian angel was not sleeping at that moment, so he must have taken action immediately.
"Sam, can I talk to you?" I turned to Luke who's now standing at the other side of the bed.
"We have nothing to talk about, besides, after keeping the truth from me for so long, do you think I will still have the care to talk to you?"
"Sam..." He was shocked by the bitterness entwined in my voice that made even my brother hung his mouth in mid-air.
"You played with my emotion! All these years I blamed myself for doing such a stupid thing! I already accepted that it was all my fault and that I was really the only one to blame when all this time you knew the truth!" "I'm sorry---"
"Forget your sorry and leave! We can't turn back the past nor what happened and I can't also forgive you!"
"Sam, "I gasped in surprise when he suddenly took my hand. I tried to take them away but he just tightened his hold. "I know I messed up everything but please, please don't close your door yet. I'm willing to wait..." "Let go of my hand!" I said through gritted teeth, still trying to take my hand back.
"I'm willing to do everything just for you to forgive me..."
"No! I've had enough of your lies and I'm tired"
"No, please! You said you still love me and you haven't forgotten me yet."
"Yes, I said---"didn't get the chance to continue what I was about to say when I
the Someone standing in
the doorway. But then my eyes widened when I recognized that it was none other than David. I gasped and immediately pulled my hand out of Luke's grip. "D-David?"
And everyone turned to him.
"You're awake." The first set of words he uttered. His eyes filled with worry but at the same time with sadness and pain.
Luke stood up as David began to approach my direction and I didn't miss the glare he gave him, but David ignored him as his eyes were focused only on me.
Jack and Dale walked around the bed to give space for David and motioned for Luke to come out with them, but Luke didn't budge in his spot.
"No! Why would I go out---"
JACK's POV:
"Oh, my---" My mouth froze in surprise when we all noticed David standing in the doorway. I swallowed greedily as the tension suddenly built up in the atmosphere.
I looked at Dale and noticed that his
eyes were moving from the two men who were raising the tension to the highest level. Maybe at that
moment we have the same thing in mind and that is to take Luke out of the room to give Sam and David the privacy to talk. And I proved my thinking right when he glanced at me and no words have to be said as he started walking towards Luke's direction.
But his best friend stubbornly struggled and insisted he would stay.
"No! Why would I go out---" but Dale was fast on putting his arm around his shoulder.
"Williams, this is not the right time, besides, we still have a lot of things to discuss, do we?"
-'Williams.'- I repeated in my head. I don't know but by the way he mentioned Luke's last name seemed so manly to me. -'Haist!'- But I immediately shake that weird thought.
And with that simple gesture, we heard Luke sigh and then nodded. It was a sign of being defeated at that time, but I know he did it only out of respect, not for his best friend but for his 'brother-in-law'.
I waited for them to walk out the door before turning to Sam and holding her hand.
"What's going on, Jack?" She asked me with a deep frown painted on her forehead and I couldn't help but glance at David.
"Nah! Nothing! We just want to give you and David time to talk, so we dragged---I mean, your brother dragged Luke out of the room." And I slowly released the breath I didn't know I was holding. "But anyway, what do you want to eat?" "Uhm... I don't know." She shrugged.
"Alright, I'll leave you two alone." I smiled and simply glanced at David again before turning around and leaving the room.
