(Bk 2) Chapter 32
Mason's POV
School was finally over and I headed towards the parking lot where I hoped I would find Mady waiting. I stopped when I saw Torres standing beside the exit door. "Hey stranger," he said, waving at me with a smile.
"You are still alive?" I deadpanned.
"Are you upset because I didn't contact you this past few days?" he asked with a smirk.
"You didn't? Barely even noticed," I responded walking past him towards the parking lot.
"Very funny," he snorted.
"Where have you been?" I inquired.
"At work. I had so many meetings and files to attend to, I couldn't find the time for school. I wanted to contact you but I waited because I thought you would call me first but as usual, you didn't. You are so cold-hearted," he said jokingly, placing his hands behind my shoulder.
"I knew you would be busy. That's why I didn't want to disrupt your work," I replied.
"Who knew you could be this thoughtful? I was thinking..," he started excitedly but suddenly paused. I was about to ask him why he stopped talking but I suddenly saw Mady leaning against the car. Did he stop speaking because he saw Mady? I followed his gaze and it stopped on Mady. We both walked towards her.
"Hey," Torres muttered.
"Hi," she replied. I glanced at both of them.
"What took you so long?" she asked me.
"I met Torres along the way," I responded. She nodded.
"Shall we leave?" she asked. She got into the car and Torres tried to get in after her.
"Mason, can you sit next to me? I have a headache and I would like to rest my head on your shoulder," she said, stopping him midway. He stepped out of the way for me.
"What's going on? You both are usually so chatty. Did you argue?" I asked skeptically.
"No, it's nothing like that. She must feel uncomfortable laying on me," he explained.
"That's absurd. Why would she feel uncomfortable with that now after all these years?" I asked with furrowed brows.
"I can just sit beside her instead," I heard Rachel's voice say. She stepped in front of us.
"Hi guys," she smiled with a slight wave.
"What are you doing here?" I asked with a frown.
"She came to school of course. Why else would she be here?" Torres replied sarcastically. I glared at him.
"Can I ride with you guys? My driver isn't here yet and I'm tired of waiting," she said.
"Absolutely. The more the merrier, right Mason?" he inquired with a smile. He didn't even wait for me to respond.
"Come on in," he said. Rachel smiled and got into the backseat with Mady.
"Are you going to keep standing there or are you getting in?" he asked. I got into the car with a sigh. Torres and Rachel occasionally made small talk. They tried to include but I just hummed or nodded in response to their conversation.
We all got down from the car when we arrived and Mady headed in first while we followed right behind her.
"Vivian!" I suddenly heard her scream on top of her voice in horror. Torres and I glanced at each other before quickening our pace. My eyes widened in shock when I saw her lying on the floor almost lifeless with her skin all red. Who the hell gave her nuts? These were all symptoms of her allergy.
"Oh my goodness! What's wrong with her?" Rachel gasped in shock.
"Lexi? What happened?" Mady asked. I looked from Vivian to Lexi. I didn't notice she was here when I came in. I glanced towards the omega who was standing beside Lexi. I knew they wouldn't be careless enough to let such a thing happen. "Did you call the ambulance?" I asked. Just as she nodded, I heard the loud blaring of the ambulance.
"Torres, accompany Vivian in the ambulance. We will be there shortly," I said to him. He nodded just as the paramedics came in and helped Vivian out. I needed to find out what exactly happened before I could contact our parents.
"Lexi, say something. What happened to her?" Mady asked worriedly, shaking Lexi's shoulders to snap her out of her reverie.
"I..don't understand..," she stuttered, glancing at her hand. I caught sight of the sandwich she was holding onto. I walked towards her.
"Did you give Vivian a sandwich that had nuts?" I asked in a serious tone. She shook her head.
"No, I didn't..," Rachel snatched the sandwich from her hands, cutting her off, and took a look at it.
"This has peanut butter so how could you say you never gave her anything with nuts?" Rachel asked.
"I really didn't..,"
"But you had the sandwich in your hands. No one in this house is allowed to make such a mistake. She's just a child. She has a severe allergic reaction to anything that contains nuts. Did you want to kill her?" Rachel inquired, cutting her off again. "Excuse me?" Lexi said.
"I've heard about how you hate Mason. You probably made him become your tutor on purpose so you could get back at him," she replied. Lexi scoffed.
"What nonsense are you talking about? I have a problem with him, not with his sister. Why would I do anything like that? Mady, you don't seriously believe anything she's saying right?"
"Why are you asking Mady? You know she's your friend and she's too nice. She won't be able to tell you how she really feels so as not to hurt your feelings," Rachel retorted.
"Mady, wait for me in the car. I will join you shortly," I said to her. She nodded. She tried walking past Lexi but she held onto her hand.
"I know you won't do something like this..," Mady started.
"The car, now," I cut her off in a loud tone.
"We will talk later," she said, releasing her hand from Lexi's grasp as she walked out. She finally looked at me.
"Mason look, I know what this looks like but I promise it's not what you think..,"
"Forget about tutoring for the main part. I might not be able to continue," I responded before heading out. She couldn't have possibly known that Vivian had a severe allergy since they barely knew each other but I didn't have the time to think too much about her right now. My priority was Vivian.
"Did you call Mum?" I asked as soon as I got into the car.
"Yes, she's waiting at the hospital," Mady replied. I looked towards Rachel.
"You can go home," I said.
"How can I go home when Vivian is in such a state and you are worried? I won't go," she replied stubbornly.
"What help can you render us?" I inquired.
"I will offer my support somehow. You can say whatever you want but I'm not going home," she insisted.
"Allow her to come along," Mady chipped in impatiently. Rachel hurriedly got into the car with us. When we arrived at the hospital, Mum was already waiting for us outside.
"Is she okay?" Mady asked as soon as we walked up to her.
"She's fine. She's lucky she didn't eat too much of it," she responded.
"Good afternoon Luna," Rachel greeted politely.
"Rachel, you also came?" Mum asked in surprise, finally noticing her presence.
"How could I not come? It was such a serious matter," she replied.
"But, how did this happen? Where did she get the sandwich from?" Mum asked.
"Apparently, the girl Mason is tutoring gave it to her," Rachel answered before any of us could.
"We aren't sure of that yet. She would have never done anything like that if she knew," Mady retorted.
"The fact remains that she was careless," Rachel said.
"Who was careless? Lexi?" mum asked.
"Let's go in instead of arguing out here," I suggested walking into the hospital ahead of them. I immediately caught sight of Torres.
"Where is Vivian's room?" I asked.
"Right over there," he replied, pointing towards a hallway.
"Lead the way. Hurry up," I urged. I didn't want to be caught up in their arguments. We both walked into Vivian's room together. She was awake and staring at her face in the mirror. "My face is blotchy," she complained.
"Are you okay?" Torres asked worriedly.
"Mason, come over here. Does my face look that bad?" she asked. Her throat looked a bit swollen. It must be painful.
"Is that the only thing you are worried about right now?" I asked in disbelief.
"No need for the both of you to look so serious. It's not like I almost died," she said with an eye roll.
"Vivian Martinez! How can you utter such words?" Mum scolded walking into the room along with Rachel and Mady.
"If only I didn't eat that sandwich," she sighed.
"What do you mean by that? Didn't Lexi give it to you?" Torres inquired.
"No, she didn't. I took it by mistake thinking it was the sandwich that was made for me. She tried to stop me but I never listened. Wait, you all thought it was her fault?" she asked in surprise. It wasn't?
