Promised To The Alpha Twins -
Chapter 69
“Don’t stop, don’t stop,” I chanted this in my head like a mantra, using it to ward off the overwhelming terror I felt. As I walked through the forest, I could hear the growls and snaps of wolves nearby. There was also a thick smell of copper in the air, and I didn’t need to ask to know what it was.
I was petrified, terrified enough to run away from this town and never come back. It was Liam and Ethan who kept me here, who kept me running towards danger instead of away from it.
Pain radiated through my torso, so strong that I would have thought I was injured. The pain, along with the thought of one of the twins being hurt, kept me running. It kept me moving forward, unable to feel the sharp, stabbing pain in my limbs and muscles.
That brief feeling of complete freedom when the shift had passed was suppressed by the terror and desperation I felt.
It was at that moment that I realized that a mate bond was both a weakness and a strength.
There was nothing, nothing I wouldn’t do to end this, to have the two twins safe with me. It was a horrible and repugnant thought. I was willing to risk innocent lives, people I had befriended, just to keep two individuals safe. I would set the world on fire if it meant keeping the twins safe and alive, and that thought horrified me utterly.
I could hear snaps and growls just a few meters behind me, and I knew Jacob and Michael were catching up to me. Liam and Ethan had briefly gone through a ceremony that the pack would celebrate for me. I would connect my mind with everyone else’s, allowing me to speak to anyone in the pack at any time. They had postponed the ceremony to give me more time to adjust, and I was beginning to regret that decision.
I couldn’t call them, I couldn’t hear their voices. I needed to hear them, I needed it more than I could imagine. One word, one sign that they were safe, and I would retreat and hide.
As it was, I wasn’t thinking about the consequences of what I might do. All I was thinking about was Liam and Ethan.
I didn’t care about being a white wolf or having abilities. What good was it if I couldn’t protect the people who meant the most to me?
A dull pain shot through my hind leg, and I quickly turned my head to see Jacob pouncing on me. I could feel his emotions as if they were my own, and I knew they weren’t trying to hurt me. They were both terrified that something would happen to me, their Luna. They were also fiercely protective, and I silently apologized for what I was about to do next.
I gathered all the strength I had, thankful that, for once, Gaia was completely in agreement with what I was thinking. She felt the same desperation that chilled my b***d, that horrible willingness to do whatever it took to keep Liam and Ethan safe.
I lunged forward, using the combined strength of Gaia and mine. Desperation and fear could work wonders. They could lead people to commit indescribable, or even incredible acts.
Just as Jacob pounced on my hind leg for the second time, I lunged to the side and sent him hurtling towards the nearest tree at full speed. Michael was next, gaining speed as he tried to run alongside me. Just as Michael pounced at my side, I skidded to almost a stop. Michael rolled, nearly pulling an old telephone pole out of the ground.
It wasn’t much, but it bought me enough time to get ahead.
I wasn’t far from the twins’ house, just a few minutes down the main road. My eyes scanned eagerly as I went down. I passed by the countless shops I had once wandered through, and noticed that the whole town seemed deserted. There wasn’t a person in sight. Cars were abandoned in various places, some even stopped at the nearest red traffic light.
Soon the shops disappeared and gave way to residential buildings and houses. I could have sworn I saw some lights on in a few of the houses, but I couldn’t be sure. I knew Liam and Ethan must have some kind of security plan in place, in case something like this happened. They had once told me that rebel attacks happened from time to time, and I hoped this was one of those times.
Fear twisted in my gut like a knife as the sounds of battle grew louder. The only types of battles I had seen were in movies, battles where you could tell who the enemy was and who was your ally. Those battles always seemed so cut and dry. A great hero would enter and turn the tides, scoring a victory for their side.
I lunged towards the end of the street, sharply turning right towards the less populated side of town. Most of the land on this side of town was in the middle of construction. Families in the pack were growing, and there had been many transfers lately. Even a preschool was being built on this side of town.
As I turned right onto the street, I managed to look back behind me and saw Jacob and Michael quite far away. Just as I turned, I could see the battle raging ahead.
I stuttered for a moment, almost coming to a stop before instinct and desperation forced me to continue. This was nothing like the movies, nothing like I had anticipated. There were wolves everywhere. Bites, growls, foaming at the mouth. Splatters of b***d filled the air. Chunks of flesh and fur covered the ground alongside the corpses of countless wolves. I couldn’t tell who was a rogue and who belonged to this pack.
My eyes darted from wolf to wolf, never finding what I was looking for. I knew what Liam and Ethan looked like in wolf form, but there were simply too many wolves fighting.
The few cars lining the road were almost destroyed. Shards of gleaming glass covered the ground, along with several pieces of metal. A work truck that had been parked on the corner was almost crushed, and I watched in absolute horror as a sandy-colored wolf was thrown onto the dented hood. The windshield cracked and g*****d under the weight before giving way completely.
Amidst the growls and howls, I could distinguish the chirping growl of a car alarm. On the side of the road stood the skeleton frame of what would soon be a house. The beams had collapsed entirely, sending a cloud of dust swirling in the air. I could taste the dirt on my tongue as well as I could smell the b***d, dirt, and saliva.
A thick, nauseating stench filled the air. It was as if a large number of people hadn’t showered in years. It smelled like sweat, bodily fluids, rotting flesh, and old garbage. I couldn’t pinpoint the smell, as it seemed to come from all directions.
Even as desperation and fear threatened to take my breath away, I never stopped. I didn’t hesitate as I charged into the battle, only then realizing that I had no idea how to defend myself.
The emotions were almost paralyzing. They attacked me even though none of the wolves turned towards me.
Anger, hatred, fear, desperation, agony, pain, longing, loss, love.
So many emotions, each with its own distinctive flavor. They assaulted my mind, tearing through the layers of my flesh until there was nothing left but my soul. I had experienced a lot of physical pain in my life, and I knew I had a decent pain tolerance. But physical pain was nothing compared to the deep agony of the soul I was experiencing. It radiated through every bone, joint, muscle, and cell until I was nothing but a pile of ashes.
My breath came out in gasps, and my step faltered for just a fraction of a second. “Control it, Sussan,” Gaia exclaimed. I had never heard her this way before. Demanding and forceful, not allowing any room for error or mistake. “Gather yourself. Do it for Liam and Ethan. Figure out how to use their emotions to make yourself stronger.”
“Easier said than done,” I thought, but I managed to continue anyway. I let Gaia take complete control, using every ounce of my concentration to push those terribly overwhelming emotions to the background. It gave me a few moments of clarity, but it was already too late to realize the mistake I had made.
“Sussan, come back.” Gaia’s voice was low, and I knew something had gone wrong.
When I came back to my senses, I realized what had happened. We had been noticed. Not just by a select few, but by everyone. Hundreds of eyes turned in our direction, and almost all the fighting came to a complete halt. Every wolf was holding their breath, waiting for what would come next. Some expected me to act, to use the proclaimed powers I was supposed to have as the white wolf. If only they knew, I bitterly laughed. All I could do was feel emotions. Utterly useless in battle, if anything, I was a hindrance.
Five long seconds passed before everyone realized there was nothing I could do. The fight was back in full force, and the sudden sound of snaps and growls sounded like war cannons in my ears.
But this was different. The fight had changed. Now I could identify some of the rogues. Their eyes burned with a crazed light, and their fur looked dirty and unwashed. It was also longer and shaggier than the other wolves, which I assumed were in our pack.
Many of those crazed eyes were on me, as if they had never left. I had become a target. My white fur seemed to catch the moonlight, almost shining in the darkness. I was a beacon for both good and bad, and everyone wanted a piece of it.
I was no longer the rescuer. I was the one in need of rescue.
Wherever I turned, a new rogue charged at me. None of them hurt me, but they were all intent on bringing me down.
I thanked whoever was listening for my above-average speed and stealth as I maneuvered through wolf after wolf. I dodged and rolled, charged and retreated as I made my way through the vast battlefield.
Just as I dodged a rogue with long reddish-brown hair, something hard slammed into my side. A cry escaped my snout, and I lunged to the ground. Dirt and grass flew into the air from the impact, and somehow, I managed to flip onto my belly as I stared directly into the mouth of one of the rogues.
Saliva dripped from his open mouth, and I suppressed a gag as a foul breath covered my face. His long tongue darted out, sliding over his snout before stalking towards me.
They didn’t want to kill me, I realized. They wanted to capture me. Not a single rogue had attempted to kill me, just to bring me down or render me unconscious. Were white wolves really so rare that someone would want one? Or was there a purpose to this battle? Was it all because of me?
My desperate prayers were answered as a wave of fierce protection engulfed me. It broke through every barrier I had erected around myself, and the emotions of every wolf rushed in with full force.
I was consumed in the agony and pain of my surroundings, drowning in fear and desperation. I was a rogue attacking the innocent, bloodthirsty and desperate for death. I was a warrior, terrified for my life and my family. I was a friend, a sister, an enemy, a lover. I was on both sides, yet on none. Surrounded by c*****e, and wrapped within it.
The air filled with an explosion of energy, and the battlefield was engulfed in an intense white light. The rogues came to an abrupt stop, confused and stunned by the sudden release of emotions surrounding them.
As the light faded, I could see how every wolf in the battle reacted to the overwhelming force of my emotions. The rogues recoiled, trembling at the magnitude of the energy I had unleashed.
Even Liam and Ethan paused for a moment, looking at me with awe and concern. I knew they could feel what I was experiencing, my fear, my determination, my desire to protect them all.
Seizing the opportunity, Ethan stepped forward to face the nearest rogues. With his fur as black as night and his eyes blazing, he was an imposing force. At his side, Liam joined the fight, using his speed and strength to disorient the remaining rogues.
My emotions continued to fill the air, affecting all the wolves in the battle. The rogues weakened, their attacks becoming clumsy and uncoordinated. On the other hand, our pack found a new determination in their hearts.
I felt connected with every wolf fighting around me. I could sense their fears and hopes, their love and courage. It was as if our souls intertwined in a powerful bond, and that made me stronger than I had ever imagined.
With each move, I felt my connection with the pack grow. It was no longer an overwhelming emotional burden but a source of power and strength. Through this connection, I could communicate with Liam and Ethan without words, sharing thoughts and strategies in the midst of battle.
Time seemed to slow down as we fought. Each movement became clearer and more precise, our actions coordinated and resolute. The rogues were overwhelmed by our unity, and little by little, they began to retreat.
The battlefield filled with the howls of the pack, a chorus of bravery and triumph. As the rogues pulled back, our pack gathered in a defensive formation, protecting each other with a newfound sense of camaraderie and loyalty.
In the center of that formation, Liam and Ethan approached me, their eyes filled with awe and gratitude. They knew something extraordinary had happened, something that had changed the course of the battle.
“Mate, what was that?” Liam asked in amazement.
Gaia took control once again, and my voice sounded strong and determined. “It’s the power of our connection, of our bond as a pack. We are stronger together, and that’s what helped us win this battle.”
Liam and Ethan exchanged glances, understanding the significance of what had just occurred. Our unity had tipped the scales in our favor, turning the tide of the fight. As we stood together, we knew that we were not just a group of individual wolves but a family, bound by love and loyalty.
The battle may have been won, but we were now more aware than ever of the challenges that lay ahead. Our enemies would not rest, and we had to remain vigilant and united to protect our loved ones and our territory.
With our newfound understanding of the power of our bond, I knew that we would face the future with strength and courage. Together, as a pack, we would overcome any obstacles that came our way.
Ethan nodded solemnly, looking at the pack gathered around him. “You’re right. I’ve never felt such a powerful unity. Thank you for reminding us what it means to be a pack.”
As the battle came to an end, a sense of hope filled the air. Despite the losses we had suffered, our pack had prevailed, and our unity had grown stronger. The connection we shared as a pack was more than just an emotional bond; it was a source of power and protection. I knew that, together, we could face any challenge the future held for us.
The night was filled with victory, but also with a renewed sense of responsibility. From that day on, I knew I would carry the weight of our pack in my heart and fight for their safety and well-being.
Amidst the darkness and chaos, I found a new strength within myself, a strength that would allow me to face the future with courage and determination, knowing that I was not alone and that my loved ones would always be by my side.
