“You two were supposed to protect her…”

With a tone of anger, Axel shook me to wake me up.

“What did you expect us to do?” growled Liam. “We could have tied her up and locked her away, but we never did that. We protected her with all our strength, more than you ever did.”

“Yes, I would have locked her away, boy,” Axel almost shouted. His voice oscillated between anger and sadness, and I found myself attentive to every word as his tone broke. “My own daughter, a white wolf. Can you understand the danger this puts her in? You are just kids. Kids playing at being an Alpha.”

“Do not overstep your authority here, Axel.” Ethan’s voice was icy, colder than it had ever been. A trace of fear ran down my spine, worrying for Axel. I felt Ethan’s anger as if it were mine, savoring its bitterness on my tongue. “Even though you may be her father, we are her packmates. You are in our pack, and you should treat us with respect. Kids or not, we can destroy your pack.”

“We all understand the danger she’s in, Axel. She’s your daughter. Show some compassion. We can’t just lock her away and expect the world to forget,” I recognized Liam and Ethan’s father’s voice.

“Now that the world knows, the word will spread. The only thing we can do is work together to keep her safe. Do you think you could set aside your differences and do that for Sussan?”

“I will never agree with the position your sons have in my daughter’s life, but yes. For Sussan, I will,” Axel responded after a pause. He seemed resigned but also concerned. Axel wasn’t the father figure I had imagined, but now I understood him better. By sensing his emotions, I gained a deeper knowledge. Where I used to resent him, even hate him, now I understood. Axel cared in his own way. It could be superficial and based on my position in his pack, but he still cared. He was worried, even terrified, that this could be used against me. Through waves of fear, concern, and anxiety, I perceived his pride.

“Thomas, it doesn’t seem like you were surprised by this revelation,” Liam pointed out.

Liam’s words caught my attention, and I focused on Thomas. His emotions flooded through me, tensing my body and widening my eyes. A wave of shock surged through me, causing my hand to clench involuntarily. Light invaded my vision, and I winced from the pain pulsating behind my eyes. I found myself lying on a couch, feeling the soft fabric that lay like silk against my skin. I looked down and blushed as I realized someone had dressed me, probably Liam or Ethan, I presumed.

A few meters away were Axel, Thomas, Liam, Ethan, and their parents. My lips moved on their own, and though my words sounded rough, everyone understood me clearly. “It’s because he already knows, right, uncle?” I spoke.

All eyes turned to me, and I allowed Thomas’s guilt to wash over me in waves. He knew and said nothing. From the looks of surprise, he had even kept the truth from his own brother. The pieces of the puzzle fell into place easily, and now I understood how Thomas had been aware of everything. He had only changed positions once again when he had run away. If I couldn’t sense his emotions, I probably would have felt furious. Thomas had betrayed his family; he had tried to capture his own niece. However, deep inside, I didn’t perceive malice or ill intentions from Thomas, just intense guilt.

Liam and Ethan advanced quickly, cornering Thomas against the wall with enough force to make hanging frames fall. Ethan’s voice was low, distorted, almost turning into a guttural growl. “Give me a reason, a reason why I shouldn’t kill you.”

With trembling legs, I got up from the couch and limped towards Liam and Ethan. I placed a hand on each of their shoulders, struggling against the rage that threatened to consume me. “Don’t kill him,” I pleaded. I shook my head, “Let him go, please.”

“Let him go?” growled Ethan, turning his head to meet my gaze. Part of his anger dissipated, but most of it still remained. “We can piece things together on our own too. You changed once before this, the moment you were almost captured. It seems like Thomas has been busy conspiring against his own family.”

“He tried to capture me, but not for the reasons you think.” I pleaded, “Guys, you know I can feel what he feels. I don’t know why he did it, but it wasn’t to harm me. That’s all I can say.”

“You can feel emotions?” Axel scoffed, running his hand over his face. “Well, that explains what you did on the battlefield.”

“Please, let him go,” I repeated, ignoring Axel for the moment.

“I’d like to hear an explanation,” Liam and Ethan said, reluctantly letting go of Axel but remaining by my side. They stood on either side of me, my imposing and slightly overprotective bodyguards. I didn’t mind their protective side; if anything, it was the only thing that made me truly feel safe.

“Thanks for that, girl,” Thomas growled, straightening his shirt. “I’ll explain to them.”

Liam barked, “You’ll find that we’re not as kind or patient as Sussan is. You have ten seconds before we make Sussan the official leader of your pack.”

“When I was your age, I didn’t know who I was either. Axel and I are half-brothers. Our father was a nasty man. He didn’t want a mixed-b***d bastard son tarnishing the family name, so he cast me aside when I was a child. Unlike you, I wasn’t my father’s firstborn. Half-breeds have a thirty percent chance of being able to shift. As an Alpha’s son, the odds were slightly higher. Once I turned eighteen and finally shifted, he considered me useful.” Thomas sneered, clearly harboring no kind feelings for his father. “Like you, I ran. The difference between us is that no one came looking for me. I shifted alone, and I stayed alone. It was pure luck that I became the Alpha of a band of rogues. I was on the verge of death at least a dozen times. I wanted to spare you that. You didn’t know me, so you didn’t listen,” Thomas explained.

Liam and Ethan looked at me, and I nodded. “He’s telling the truth.”

I wanted to stay angry with Thomas, but it’s harder than you think when you can feel the emotions of others. I sensed nothing but concern and sincerity from Thomas. While I would never consider him family, he did what he thought was best at that time. Now that I had Liam and Ethan by my side, no one would try such a thing again.

“You know what you did was wrong, don’t you?” I raised an eyebrow at Thomas, who shifted uncomfortably under my gaze. “No need to scold me like a child, kid,” he grumbled, pushing back his long hair. “I get it. I screwed up. I didn’t know you had two Alphas as companions. Would have been nice to know that, Axel.”

“It wasn’t something I was concerned about at the time,” Axel said, looking at his half-brother before turning his attention back to me. “Well, now that Thomas’ life isn’t hanging by a thread, we need to discuss the repercussions of your actions, Sussan.”

“Don’t even try that s**t, Axel,” I retorted, narrowing my eyes at him. While I could sense the emotions of others, I wasn’t suddenly going to become an easy prey. Axel had no right to blame me for what happened. Liam and Ethan were in trouble, and I knew without a doubt he would have done the same for his mate. “I could feel Liam’s pain. I didn’t know what had happened to them, and if given the choice, I’d do it all over again.”

“You’re not just an ordinary white wolf, Sussan,” Axel retorted. “You’re a white wolf who’s the heir not of one, but of two packs. Not only that, you’re the mate of two Alphas. You may not understand your place within our world, but let me enlighten you.”

Once you inherit all three packs, you will become the most powerful werewolf in thousands of years. “I get it, I’ll be the Luna of the largest pack in the country,” I replied, letting out a long sigh.

“Liam and Ethan have already told me this, Axel.”

“Really? Did they talk to you about the High Table?” Axel sneered, his eyes shifting to Liam and Ethan. “The High Table?” I asked, frowning at all three.

“What does the High Table have to do with anything?” Liam frowned, looking at his father.

“I had hoped they could overlook Sussan, but now that she’s a white wolf, I’m afraid there’s no way around it, is there?” Liam and Ethan’s father sighed. “No, there won’t be any way around it.”

Axel spat out, “They’ll want to meet her. They’ll want to analyze her and see what she’s capable of. Then, when the time comes, there will be an empty seat at the table.”
