Purchased A Mr. Right -
Chapter 722
Addy...
Simon was handsome, and Addy was beautiful. Emily suddenly felt crestfallen seeing them together.
Emily had never met Addy before, but she always knew about her.
When Emily finally met her, Addy was every bit the stunning beauty she had expected to see with a heart-shaped face, almond-bright eyes, and white teeth. With only light makeup, she looked bright and charming like a fairy.
She caught the tone of surprise in Simon's voice that he was trying to disguise in his question, "When did you come back?"
"Today," Addy said, pulling back a lock of hair caught at her temple to the back of her ear and smiled, "I sent to the hospital to look for you and I was told that you had gone to Yany State. I thought of taking a flight there to find you, then I heard you're coming back today. That's when I asked for the address and came over to wait for you!"
Addy walked up to them, the heel of her boots clicking raspily. She nodded politely to Emily and smiled broadly at Simon, "You've just got off the plane, did you? I bet you haven't eaten yet. Let's go to the hotpot restaurant we used to go to last time. We have so much to talk about."
Emily heard all that, especially the last bit, and felt herself being sidelined.
Both Addy and Simon appeared to be so close, like a pair of magnets with different polarities attracting each other and the magnetic field kept everything, or everyone else, away, and Emily felt excluded and suffocated.
Emily gently shook off Simon's stiff hand and said in a muffled voice, "I'm going up first!"
She barely took two steps forward when Simon pulled her back.
"Let's go together!"
Her head spun around in a daze and Simon was gripping her hand more firmly. She frowned at him, hearing him saying, "Didn't you say you got hungry?"
Emily swallowed. Out of the corner of her eye, she spied Addy turning slightly stiff.
The dark Cayenne revved into a quiet little alley and stopped at the entrance of a Their car drove into a remote alley and stopped at the entrance of an old-time hotpot restaurant - an old building converted into two-story. Rows of little red lanterns adorned every level outside the windows, making the atmosphere nearby lively and warm.
There were vacant tables on the ground floor and the waiter arranged one just beside a window.
The tables were all round with a charcoal-heated copper pot in the center. Although it helped that everyone sat more comfortably without staring at each other into the face directly and awkwardly. Yet they sat down like the three sides of a triangle after a fashion, making things looked embarrassing and complicated.
Addy had been visibly emotional during the journey, peering left and right out of the window and when she sat down at the table, she exclaimed, "Wow, nothing's changed here!"
"It's been running pretty well," Simon said with a smile.
"Have you been coming here all these years?" Addy asked, her almond-shaped eyes shining brightly.
Simon's forehead creased deeper as he hesitated, frowned slightly before he finally allowed, "Sometimes."
"I'm sorry, I'm so excited coming back here from abroad that I've forgotten to introduce myself. Hello, I am Addy Swan!" Addy reached out a hand gracefully, not forgetting to regard Simon with those shining eyes of hers, saying to Emily, "You can call me Addy like Simon does!"
Emily reached out her hand and said, "Hi... I am Emily!"
The two of them shook hands very briefly and let go of each other almost immediately.
With a friendly voice, Addy asked, "What do you do, Emily?"
Without waiting for Emily to reply, Simon, who was pouring tea, answered on her behalf, "She is a journalist!"
Addy paused slightly at that and then nodded with a smile. "That's great. Your job has a promising future and it comes with a sense of honor. The most important thing is that being a journalist is fun. Which is more than what I can say for ballet dancers like me: the only thing we do every day is to stay in the dance room and practice dancing!"
Emily smiled perfunctorily to agree.
Emily could feel Addy's scrutinizing eyes trying to size her as she sipped at her tea. She was curious and inquisitive about the relationship shared between Emily and Simon, but she could not ask directly. Emily wondered about the reason Addy did not table the ultimate question. Still, Addy did not feel like a scheming and cunning person
Maybe because of her past experiences of dealing with a certain daughter of the Goo family who could wield wits and courage with equal facility. But she was certain Addy seemed different. Addy was Simon's close friend...
The waiter came to take their order, "Do you want dual hot pot soup bases or just the spicy base?"
"Dual hot pot soup bases please!" Simon said. He paused immediately as if something came up, and he added, "No shallots in the soup!"
After taking the order, the waiter nodded and left.
Addy's almond-shaped eyes stared straight at Simon, and without any attempt to hide her joy, she gasped, "Simon, I can't believe you still remember that I don't eat shallots!"
"I do," Simon nodded, his finger caressing the rim of his teacup. With his usually-lazy voice, he muttered flatly, "You're allergic to shallots. Don't forget that I'm a doctor."
One way or another, the lights overhead made Addy looked brighter and more beautiful. "I remember the time when we had to wander for several blocks only to find a copper pot for hot pot during our time at Columbya University. And when our soup was finally cooking, the charcoal embers burst out and nearly burned down our hostel! The landlady was so angry that she threw all my luggage out! Haha!" Reminiscing their thrilling exploits together, Simon laughed, "Yeah, that beautiful landlady."
"Heavens, it's been years since I last had hotpot. I miss this taste! Especially that mushroom soup that you made!" Addy finished, giving Emily a look as she said, "Simon's an excellent cook!" Emily licked her lower lip and nodded with a forced smile, "I know..."
Emily's hand was hidden under the table, clutching a corner of her shirt so firmly that it wrinkled. Fortunately, the waiter appeared not long after, bringing the copper pot filled with soup. As the flames licked at its bottom, the soup soon began bubbling with steam rising up and obscuring their sights of each other.
This must have been the most tasteless meal that Emily had ever had.
She had no idea what to do with the dishes on the table and everything she ate tasted bland and tasteless and they stuffed into her gut like stones.
Simon paid the bill after the meal and she had been silent all night, having barely spoken more than three sentences. The night wind brushed on her cheeks and she couldn't help but yawn.
She raised a hand to cover her mouth when she felt a warm breath caressing by her ear. "Mrs. Chin, are you sleepy?"
Simon said it clearly and openly. The restaurant had very good sound insulation, so they heard no much noise coming from inside, and the alley was particularly guiet aside from the din of traffic passing by occasionally.
Coming up behind them, just Addy stepping off the stairs was Addy, who heard that and she froze.
"Mrs. Chin?" Holding her breath, Addy tentatively asked, "Simon, you two..."
Emily also couldn't help holding her breath, and her hands also curling up because of anxiety.
Simon stayed silent for a before saying slowly with a low voice, "Addy, Emily and I are married."
