” Devon , there you are. We are to have a meeting with their pride leader, Usif. We need to organise how we get them home and how we transport all of their dead. Also, it seems Shira has met her mate in him. At least there is one good thing that came out of her dragging them all here into a fight that wasn’t theirs to be involved in “, he told me, as I came walking up to him with Violet holding my hand. He hadn’t even stopped to really look at me , he was still looking around and giving others orders. I mean, I know this is stressful , but I knew Enzo something more than this was wrong.

” Where is Anthea ? ” I asked him , shocked he didn’t have his mate glued to his side. He finally looked directly at me and Violet , and I saw the weight on his shoulders double at the mention of Anthea. ” She is down in the cells with my mother. Dad was hurt badly. It seems she ordered a few panthers to drag him away from us and isolate him. To kill him. He killed them all , but they injured him badly. He lost a lot of b***d “. He tells me.

I nodded ” Yea , I sent some warriors to retrieve him. He was making out with your mum. It wasn’t that bad. ” He looked at me and shook his head. ” Well, he lied , it is. He lost too much b***d to be able to shift. They hit a main artrie. Doc had to operate to try and close it. It worked but he still isn’t out of the woods. They are dosing him up on a b***d IV then hopefully he can shift and his wolf will fix the rest. Then Antheas’ mum well ,it was internal bleeding. Crushed ribs and quite a few broken bones. They have induced a coma. The b***h liked to hit our parents, it seems ” he snarled.

Violet put her hand on my chest. ” I am going to go be with them. Anthea was there for me with . . . ” she paused, unable to say his name. But she didn’t need to. I understood. ” Yea , yea go. I’ll come find you later “, I smiled down at her. I kind of felt a bit guilty for running off with her that way , now that I knew exactly what was happening out here. ” Look Enzo, I am sorry I have been missing ” he snapped his head my way and narrowed his eyes. ” Don’t , I am happy you have got your head out of your a*s , you may actually be useful to me now”. I know he was only being honest , and I would be lying if I said that did;t sting a little. But only because it was true , I had been pretty f*****g useless in all of this. First being compelled , then all of this with Violet had me distracted and then she got to me again in the fight. ” Some f*****g Beta I am turning out to be, huh ? ” I said , because it was true.

He put his hand on my shoulder , then pulled me to his side as he started walking us up to the pack house. ” You’ll be the best Beta , it is why I chose you. You have always been by my side. None of what has happened recently is you Devon. I know that . But do me a favor and you know, just don’t get anymore crazy women taking a fancy to you, yea ? “I burst out laughing and so did he. f**k, when had we last laughed together?

” Check you out for actually being nice for a change and making a joke. You hit your head up there in the battle ? “I asked him. He pushed me away from his side , muttering a*****e. ” Naa man , when you experience being one or two hearty beats away from death and then survive it. Well , it just makes you see things clearer. ” Looking at him ” Nearly dying ? What did I miss ?” I asked him. He looked at me and laughed ” I’ll tell you later , it sounds like they have finished their mating too. Honestly, I got left to be on clear up because you all could;t hold back mating for a few hours. I did it for months after finding my mate ” he rolled his eyes , joking again. ” You were an a*****e is why ” I tell him and this time he winces, ” Touche’ come on let’s go be the alpha and the beta of this pack, yea ? “

Shira did show up wearing a very noticeable mating mark and very very satisfied. Usif looked torn between being happy with his new mating and broken at the fact his pride had just been torn in half pretty much. ” Nice to officially meet you , I am Enzo, the Alpha of this pack and you met Devon here earlier before you took off for privacy ” Enzo smiled at him as he held his hand out. Usif laughed a little. ” Sorry about that , I hope Fallak , my younger brother, helped you and gave you my apologies for not being there to officially meet you when you got back from disposing of her “. Enzo nodded ” He was most helpful , he has been calming your pride and they have been gathering your deceased “.

Usif’s face fell. ” I am most happy for my mating , I have searched for her for a while. I just wish it had been in a better setting. I fear, as a pride leader, I have not exactly carried out any of my first responsibilities to my pride , more like abandoned them when they needed me the most. But when I scented her ” he looked at Shira and smiled. She smiled sadly back at him. I chimed up at that ” Do not worry , I haven;t been cracking as my new role of beta either . Mating issues also ” I told him so he wouldn’t feel so alone.

He smiled at me and nodded his head in thanks for seeing what I was trying to do. ” Shall we go take a seat , and get a drink ? It seems we are all new in our roles as leaders and I don;t know about you , but I kind of need that drink right now “, Enzo said to Usif. Usif agreed and Shira stopped him from walking. ” My friends need me right now. I shall leave you men to it and go support them ” she told him. He looked panicked that she was leaving his side. She must have sensed it because she got on her toes and gave him a k**s. ” I will be back soon ” she told him. Then she walked off. He watched her go , until I said, ” A drink sounds good “. He looked over at us and nodded , just as we were heading in. I was assuming that his brother walked in. It was confirmed when he made an introduction between me and him.

Then Enzo cracked out a bottle of whiskey from his dad’s stash and put four glasses on the table. This wasn’t how I ever pictured our first meeting with another paranormal pack or pride. But I think after what just went down it was perfect. ” Can you remember everything that happened how ? or why she chose you guys ? ” Enzo asked them. Usif shook his head. ” No , nothing. I remember everything that happened here. I remember us coming here. Hiding out on the outskirts of your pack, over the mountains. But why we were doing all of that , we have no idea. Our pride has been moving around a lot lately. Which, for a pride of our size, has been difficult. We lost our land , humans bought it and wanted it to develop on. We petitioned , but they won. They called our way of living unmodern. And because our pride was on unowned land, they could just take it , even though our families have lived on it for thousands of years. It never occurred to anyone to try and purchase it. They said we should learn to live in civilization, if only they knew we were not like them. Would they want us living with them then ? ” he laughed bitterly.

“Where was the land you lived ? I asked. A few thousand miles away , we were heading down this route because we heard of all this untouched land that was this way. We knew your pack held most of it , and we researched and found out you had never been bothered. So we have been making enquiries with the council to actually have a meeting with your pack. See if we could take residence somewhere close by , not on your land, of course, and to also ask how you evade humans disturbing you ? ” Usif asked us.

Enzo answered him. ” We bought all of the land we are on , and acres and acres of land that surround our boundaries. There is literally no reason for humans to come this way. Plus, they can not touch any of the green lands here for development. It has to remain pure. So they do not even try to buy it from us. There is literally no point in it , because they can not make money on it. The closest towns to leave us be because there may be a bit of fear there, as well as the fact we use them for everything or trade goods, building supplies etc so we supply them with lots of revenue. We have tech guys that have things in place to look out for drones and such that try to spy on what we do out here. ” Enzo explains , Usif and his brother looked at us impressed.

” I do not mean to sound rude, but how do you afford such things ? ” Fallak asked. Enzo looked at him and shrugged. ” We studied finances a long time ago , kept up to date with the human world and its ways. And we invested in trades and stocks. We also build websites that make us money , that deal with different things. A few examples are dating sites for humans and marketing sites. We even run a successful selling site humans use to sell stuff to each other . My grandfather started the process , my father carried it on , we also sent the smartly gifted wolves out into education. They pass their learning on back here ” Enzo told them.

Usif started at him like he had grown a third head , then sat back in his seat and gulped down his drink. ” I guess that was where we failed. We keep us and humans separate , you modernized ” he said, sounding awed. Enzo shook his head. ” In most things, yes , but trust me we have been ignorant also. We are only just catching up with the whole mating outside of your paranormal and inviting other paranormal into our pack. Accepting a difference, so to speak. Well, if you went to the council, that would be where she found you. She saw an opportunity and took it “. Enzo went on to tell them about what had been happening in our pack because of her. The fact Enzo was being so open , meant he had a good feeling for them. Usually he would be so secretive. They were appalled by what they learned we had been through. And again apologized for their part , but they were not at fault.

” So you have no home for us to send your pride and your deceased home to ? “I asked them and they both shook their heads. ” No, we have a camp set up. Where all of the possessions we brought with us are. But no actual home to go to “, Usif confirmed. s**t , I looked at Enzo and he had sat back , his fingers rubbing his chin which said he was in deep thought. He jumped up and excused himself for a moment and came back with a big map of our land and the surroundings. ” Where did she have you waiting , and where is your camp ? “he asked Usif, who looked confused about why he was asking. But I knew him , I knew where his mind was at now. And I sat back and smiled at my dear friend and that actually behind that rough exterior was a damn good man.
