I couldn’t believe it when Ryken turned up with Penance. The sight of her both shocked me because of the state she was in and thrilled me. Penance was my cousin , my mum’s sister’s daughter. When she had laid eyes on me she had jumped out of the big mans arms , ran at me and, with the force she wrapped her arms around my body, it knocked me and her both to the floor. I looked up at Ryken confused. Why was she here ? Why had they brought her ? But one look at the big man’s expression, I kind of got the drift. He looked at her with such a loss , at only the fact she had come out of his arms into mine. I guessed they were mates.

She was dirty and skinny , her hair mattered and mucky. And just looking at her arms I could see bruises. Moments later, my own mate and the rest appeared. I felt something settle inside of me at the fact he was now back. I had been a nervous mess. ” Penance what happened ? ” I asked her. She was sobbing in my arms , heart-wrenching heaves racked her body. Ryken whispered her name and she tensed in my arms. ” Please .. please ” she tried, but her voice sounded croaky and horse. Like she hadn’t used it in a long time. ” Water “I asked , to no one in particular. Just that is what she needed. Anthea handed me one seconds later. I was guessing she magicked it up. I hadn’t seen it. I was too busy concentrating on my cousin trying to calm her down. ” Here, Penance ” I said, handing it her, but she shook her head. ” Please , Penny ” she sobbed, ” Not Penance. “

I was confused. But I did as she asked.” OK Penny , here drink some “. I handed it to her as she sat up from me and she greedily swallowed it down that fast. That she made herself cough and sputter most of it back up. Everyone looked on mortified at the sight. The last I saw her , she was just a teenager. She had always been quiet , more of a bookworm that kept to herself. But she hadn’t looked beaten down and broken. Penny was a good kid though , she wasn’t anything like her brother Sinner. He was all for the cause, older than us and as wicked as the rest of them.

” Sorry ” she whispered. I shook my head at her and grabbed her face , wiping the tears that ran down it with my thumbs. ” Penny, what happened ? “I asked her. She looked around the room a little wary. Her eyes were full of fear. ” Penny, don’t be scared, these are all good people “, I told her. Her eyes lastly landed on Ryken , who tried to give her an encouraging smile. She seemed frozen as she looked at him , her face blank. My heart was pounding. What if she was about to reject him ? Our coven were made to believe mates were a weakness. What if I had to throw her into the cells because she could be a risk to everyone here ? I hadn’t even thought of that , I had just been excited to see her and scared of the condition she was in. We were close growing up , but now she could have been poisoned by their beliefs. She used to ask me lots of questions about why I used to act the way I did , why I didn’t want to do what my parents wanted to do ? I used to think maybe she would be like me and Rion , different from the rest, but we had left her there. Who knows what these years could have done to her?

She eventually looked away from him. And looked at me, tears pooling back in her eyes. ” I would have come with you ” she whispered , and hope bloomed in my chest. ” Had you asked I would have ” she said. I felt my own tears sting my eyes. ” You were just a kid and we were on the run, Penny. It was dangerous. I didn’t know you wanted out too “, I told her, feeling guilt, smashing me in the face.

She nodded , looking down and taking in shuddery breaths. ” Penny what happened ? “I asked her again. She didn’t look at me as she spoke , she kept her head down. ” The coven went crazy when you and Rion left , they went into overdrive searching for you. They raided packs , covens, prides, you name it, they looked for you. In the process , my mum and dad were killed. I was left in the care of Sinner. When you stopped using your magic and all of a sudden they couldn’t even trace you anywhere. They believed you dead. Your parents and Wallace went off the deep end. Anyone who showed any sign of not believing in their stupid horrid plans was punished or killed. They wanted everyone to give themselves over to their dark sides. Whoever didn’t met the fate, I just said. At first, I got away with it still being young , but when I turned eighteen, I still didn’t give myself over. Sinner handed me over to punishment , without even one doubt in his mind or hesitation. He talked auntie and uncle into me being beaten, starved daily and used as a slave practically around the coven until I caved and let it take over. I never did , I wanted to be like you , I wanted to be free ” she whispered.

” Sinner did this to you , he had people beat you ? “I asked her, shocked. She laughed quietly. ” He was the one that beat me. My brother is not kind like Rion “. She looked up and looked around like she was looking for someone and it dawned on me who. She was looking for Rion , assuming he would be there since we ran together. ” Penny ” I said , pain clogging up my throat at the fact I had to tell her , actually say the words. ” Penny he , he , well he died “I told her.

She looked at me with her eyes wide and this time we both grabbed each other as we broke down crying. We stayed that way for a while. When we finally broke apart, there was only us two. Ryken , Devon , Enzo and Anthea left the room. The others had left. ” Let’s go get you cleaned up , fed and get you some rest. We can talk more about this tomorrow “, I told her. She nodded , then her eyes snapped up and she looked panicked. ” They will find I have gone when they get back. They will be back by now ” she rushed out. ” Back from where ? “I asked her and she licked her lips. ” They believe you are not dead now , your mother said she felt you alive , all their plans have come back to life. They went to the magic grounds to cast a spell to find you. They have been doing it every night for days now and coming up empty. They are starting to believe your mother imagined it , but she is adamant. She is adamant she felt you ” she warns me.

I looked at Devon. They did not know where I was yet , but my mother would not stop. If she believed me alive she would keep going.” I have men watching all of the feeds. They will let us know if they did succeed tonight. But for now you are safe here Penny, , I am Violets’ mate, Devon. These are Enzo, the alpha of the pack , and Anthea, the luna. And this is Ryken , he is our friend and a dragon shifter. I see with your eyes you are not like theirs , so we will help protect you. I see you are important to Violet. That makes you important to us, OK. You are safe now. ” I had never felt more love for him than I did right then. There was no suspicion or anything, just acceptance. ” Come stay at the pack house tonight please. I would sleep better if you were all close by ” Anthea asked. She had a hand protectively on her belly , it made me smile.

Helping Penny up , I saw just how weak she was , she could hardly walk. How would she walk back to the pack house. But Ryken kind of took that out of all of our hands. He marched forward and swooped her up. She went rigid in his arms , but he didn’t act like he noticed and started walking her out of the room we were in , in the training building. She looked over his shoulder frantically for me , and I rushed to catch up. ” I am here ” I comforted her. Ryken didn’t put her down , until we stood in one of the bathrooms in the pack house. Then he begrudgingly left while I gave her a bath , and helped her undress. Then I helped her in the bath. I literally saw her relax and sigh as she sank into the warmth.

We didn’t really speak. I didn’t want to force her. She more than likely has a lot to digest right now. So I just washed the layers of dirt off of her skin. I had to empty the bath and refill it twice , because the water got that dirty whilst washing her skin and hair. I smiled down at her when she was finally clean and just relaxing now. ” What ? “she asked. Seeing me gaze at her. ” There you are ” I said and she smiled slighlty. Bruises and scars still marred her skin , but underneath all of the grime , no one would have been able to see just how beautiful she was. My cousin was a rare beauty. Her deep red curly hair that looked like fire , her bright green eyes and freckled skin , then her pouty mouth all made up for a goregoeus looking girl. She looked thin and frsil right now , and a bit of weight on her would only accelrate those looks. Once she was out of the bath , I helped her to sit on a stool while I dried her hair for her. And then I runned oinmnt on the bruised and cuts that were still fresh. ” I can not belive Sinner would do this to you ” I said sadly “I am sorry that I left you there ” I told her guilt over riding me again.

Her hand came up and placed over mine. I looked at her and she smiled sadly. ” If you hadn’t left your life, all of our lives would have been over , we would have all become those beasts years ago. We are together again now ” she said, sounding way more wise than I was. She had been treated this way , yet she was comforting me. She looked down shyly , I could tell she was wanting to say something, so I waited. ” My mate is he a good man ? “she asked me shyly and I smiled at her. ” He is ” I told her , she still looked terrified at having a mate , but she smiled a little. ” And the rest of them , are they good people ? “I nooded again. ” The best Penny ” she semee dto relax then , like she was now truly beileving she had gotten out. When I helped her dress into some of my clothes they bagged off of her , but at least they were clean. I helped her out of the bathroom and both Devon and Ryken stood there waiting. Both their eyes widened at the sight of her , she looked far different than what she did when they brought her. ” My fire ” Ryken wispered. Looking like he was about to haul her a*s up and carry her away. I was getting ready to stop him , he would have to be patient with her . After everything she had been through , mating with her would take patience. But he shook his head and took a deep breath. ” Sorry , your hair reminds me of my fire. And my favorite colour, ruby , you are beautiful ” he said to her. She blushed, her pale cheeks turning red , and as she ducked her head I saw the smile she was trying to hide.
