He took a deep gurgling breath , it looked like it pained him. ” Ani , are you OK ?” he gasped out and each word sounded like they stabbed him with a thousand knifes. I shook my head at him, my eyes leaking constantly now. ” Dad, I’m fine , it’s you that isn’t, ” I breathed. He smiled weakly again. Taking another gurgling couple of breaths. ” I finally got to stick up for my daughter ” he struggled out. ” I am more than fine , I got to do what a real father should do ” he finished.

A sob escaped my mouth. I felt Peter’s hand on my shoulder as I put my head down on dad’s hand. ” Dad, why won’t you let mum in here? Your wolf needs her so he can heal you. ” I said, glancing up when I had gathered my composure. He closed his eyes , a single tear escaped the corner of his eye. ” She can not have me , if she does not accept you. I always wanted a girl. My own daddy’s girl. Your . . . ” he started coughing. More b***d was leaking from his mouth. I looked around quickly and found some tissues. Grabbing some, I dabbed at his mouth. He took another breath , his hand shakily came up and grabbed my wrists, stopping my fussing.

I snapped my eyes back to his , and his crinkled in the corners. ” Your mother’s ego took that from me , and my own weakness to go against my mate. I should have fought for you from the day you came in to this earth early. But for someone so little , you were so strong. The doctors said you wouldn’t live , you did. They said your lungs were too weak. You cried the pack hospital down louder than any other baby there. I should have known then you were stronger than what people thought. And you would always continue to prove people wrong “. His hand moved from my wrist to my cheek and stroked it , but it proved too much for him and his hand dropped back to the bed.

I was at a loss for words. I looked back at my brothers, who all watched on with guilty or saddened expressions. ” Do you wish to leave us dad ? “I asked. It was the only question that came to my mind as I looked at my brothers. I looked back at him and dad was looking more guilty than them. It made me angry , through his own guilt, he was OK to die. I felt my eyes narrow at him. ” NO ” I snapped at him and he didn’t flinch. ” No you hear me dad , no. Do you find it fair that I finally have my dad , and now you plan to just give up on all of us? No, it isn’t happening. I do not care what my mother thinks of me . And what do you think she will think of me if her mate dies , because he was guilty of how he let people treat me? I want my dad , I want a dad and I need a dad. I need you “, I snapped, standing up.

I guess I didn’t know how much emotion I had stuffed down when it came to my parents. I had always fooled myself into believing I was OK with it all , well ish. I turned to look at Timothy. ” Go get mum in here ” I told him, and he was shaking his head. ” I can’t , do you not think she would be in here now if she could be? Dad asked the alpha to command her to stay out. Begged him to do it. The alpha didn’t want to but he was getting upset and it was making him worse “.

I frown at Timothy and he just shrugs. “OK well, go get me the alpha “, I demand, and Timothy looks at my other brothers. They nodded and he went out. ” Ani “, my dad’s voice made me turn back to him. ” I can heal without her ” he said, and I shook my head and looked down at his body. ” No you can’t , dad your wolf is disappearing. He needs his mate. You still love her, don’t you? ” I found it hard to believe you could just fall out of love with your mate. I couldn’t ever imagine just falling out of love with Enzo. It was like he was programmed into my own DNA to love him forever.

He nods ” Of course I do. But when you have your own pups you will understand. It took me a while to realize it , but your pups are meant to be the best of both of you. None of you resemble me and your mum and for that I am grateful “. The door to the room opened and the alpha popped his head around . He smiled at me and nodded his head for me to go outside of the room. I didn’t want to leave my dad , but I needed to alpha to let my mum in.

Reluctantly, I went out and the alpha was leaning against the hall wall. ” You sure bringing your mom in here is the best thing to do ? ” I looked back at the door. ” If we don’t he’ll die , his wolf needs its mate to heal my dad “I explained. He sighs and rubs the back of his neck. ” What about you ? Your mum wasn’t willing to change her mind. They had just been in an argument when he walked into the village and heard and saw what they were doing and got into that fight. Your father had said that he would reject her if she didn’t change “, he told me, and I gawked at him. My dad had really threatened to reject her.

” It doesn’t matter now , what matters is saving him. I can’t lose my dad “. The alpha looks me over. ” I’ll go let her in , we’ve got everyone settled and guarded. Everyone is gathering downstairs ” he told me. I thanked him and went back into the room. Peter was sitting by the side of my dad talking quietly to him. When I walked in, they quietened down. Peter wouldn’t look at me. ” What? ” I snapped. I looked at Samuel and he looked away from me too.

” What’s going off ? “I asked again and they continued to ignore me. ” Dad ? ” his eyes were closing. His strength was leaving him. ” Someone better tell me what’s going off “. I felt this rage in me and it was like anger I had never felt before. It expelled from my pores and I felt this tingling running all over my body, then it was like I could visibly see an aura shining from me and around the room. My dad’s eyes were back open and he was looking at me , my brothers eyes were wide. ” NOW ” I snapped and my brother fell off of his chair and to his knees. Samuel followed and my father’s neck bent to the side. The door burst open and in ran Enzo , the alpha, and my mother back in her human form. As soon as she entered the room, though she dropped to her knees too , only Enzo and the alpha didn’t.

Enzo looked around the room like he was ready to attack , so did the alpha. When their eyes landed on my brothers and father , they looked confused. ” Anthea, are you doing that ? ” the alpha questioned. I didn’t know what he was talking about. My face must have shown it as I looked at my brother , wondering what they were doing. ” Anthea , your giving off an Alpha aura, it’s why they are bowed. They have no choice.” The alpha explained. I was shocked , I had an alpha aura, only alpha’s could do that. But if that was what I was doing then I was going to find out what they had been saying and ask how I was doing this later.

I felt shitty for doing it , but I turned to Peter. ” Tell me what you were discussing ” I ordered. I could tell he was torn , but like when any other alpha commands you to do something, you had no choice. ” Dad hadn’t loved mum for a long time. He has hated her. In fact, it has only been the bond and us keeping him from rejecting her. He says mum isn’t the woman he once loved ” he grits out. I hear mum gasp behind me , but Peter wasn’t finished. ” He says mum has known this , known his hatred of her. Mates can sense eachothers feelings. And she never even asked why he hated her , he says the woman she is now is all about status , her ego and she is selfcentered ” .

Well, I guess that answered my question of whether a mate can not love their mate. But he had once , and he could again. They had just lost their way. I turned to look at mum , who looked like a broken shell of the woman I knew before. ” DO YOU HEAR ALL OF THIS ? YOU BROKE OUR FAMILY, NOT ME. ” I roared at her and she flinched. ” It’s not all , he found out she was working with the rebellion , she wanted them to get rid of you. They told him in the fight that they had help inside and one way or another they would kill you, that they had someone close to you that would help them get you killed . Dad says it can only be her ” Peter finished off.

When I looked back at mum , she was shaking her head. Tears poured from her eyes. ” No , never. I . . . I know I have done and been wrong. But I wouldn’t do that ” she sobbed. I believed her , I sensed no lies. I couldn’t think straight , especially because Enzo was growling too. I needed to get to that meeting , concentrate on saving people and not my f****d up family. Looking down at mum , I sighed. ” I command you to stay in this house , mainly this room. You will only leave it to get supplies to nurse him back to health. You will talk , and once he is better, if he chooses to still reject you, then you will be banished from these lands where you can cause no more hurt. I have never done anything to you to make you hate me. I was a baby and I didn’t ask for any of this. But you chose your actions, even still I would be willing to give you a chance. Because I am a better person than you will ever be. I would never emotionally abandon any child of mine. So , you either change or leave , after you heal him. Your choice. I will be here when you want to talk ” I said to her. I couldn’t stand to face the turmoil in her face any longer. So I barged out of the room and into the hall.

When I got there , I felt the aura pull back and it took my breath away. ” It’s time ” I heard Sianna say in my mind. I was about to ask her what was time when I felt pain all over my body radiate. i would have screamed if it wasn’t for the fact my vision blurred and I felt my legs slump beneath me. What sight I had left went sideways as my head hit the floor. I heard the door open and caught the scent of my mate before everything went black.
