Rejected By My Mate, Chosen By Fate -
Chapter 106
It’s already the next morning and I’m just about to leave. Kayden is too as well and though it’s a bittersweet moment that almost leads me to tears, I just have to control myself. This isn’t the first time I’ve had to tell him goodbye before he left for a journey but somehow, this hits different and I can’t even tell the emotions spiralling within me.
“Evelyn, you’re pregnant, remember? Please relax.” Tara cautioned and I took a deep breath. Of course, I’m pregnant so this might be my pregnancy hormones flying all over the place and causing me to feel sad for no reason.
Speaking of which, since I had been able to convince Kayden to let me go, we had both decided that we wouldn’t tell anyone till I got back because if I announced the news, there’s no way Ana and Elsie would let me go.
We all bid Kayden farewell before watching him leave with an entourage.
“Are you ready Evelyn?” Elsie questioned. “As I’ll ever be.” I said with a small smile. “Somehow I still don’t feel good about you going there but since you really want to, I’ll let you figure this out but just remember to keep a safe distance from that man. Since you’re going there on official duties, you’ll only have to meet with him in the presence of other people so you should be safe. Please avoid situations in which the two of you might end up alone and always be safe.” Elsie said to me softly and I nodded.
I’m so grateful for their concern for me and I feel slightly bad that I have to hide such good news from them but it’s necessary.
“I will, I promise.” I assure her and we hug each other slightly.
“Be safe my dear, may Selene always guide your path.” Ana said before taking me in a hug and with this level of care, it was becoming difficult to not shed tears.
“I’ll be fine, Ana. I promise.” I assured her as well and broke from the hug. I realize they’re only this emotional because I’ll be meeting with my abuser once more.
Just as I’m about to leave, I hear small footsteps and soon a gentle tug on my dress.
I turn around and see Nevaeh with a small bag on her back.
“Mummy, where are you going without me?” She questioned with folded hands and a dramatic face. A smile instantly lit my face despite the fact that I knew that it would be difficult to convince her to stay behind.
I stooped down to her height and tried to make her understand.
“Listen to me dear, I just need to go and run some errands that are long overdue. I promise I’ll be back soon, you won’t even notice that I was gone. In the meantime, you can play with Elaine (Elsie’s daughter), your aunt or your grandma.” I tried to cajole.
“No mummy, I won’t let you go anywhere without me. Daddy sometimes leaves for errands as well but you always stay with me. Daddy just left and now you want to leave me too? Have I been bad? Don’t you love me anymore?” She questioned with teary eyes and I melted. This sassy but overdramatic three year old is just too much at times. How could she think that we don’t love her anymore? Or the better question should be, how do I tell her that I’m going to meet with her biological father who’s a complete a*s?
I take her into my arms and try to comfort her. “Listen to me sweetheart, you really shouldn’t say such things. You know that your father and I love you a lot, our love for you is bigger than the whole world and we can never leave you. We’re just going for important work, I promise you that we’ll be back soon. You can just sleep with your grandma tonight, I’ll try my best to return soon.” I tried to assure her but this little daughter of mine just wasn’t taking any of it.
She did the unexpected and burst into tears. “No mummy no, I don’t want to stay here without you, the monster under my bed will take me away if you aren’t here to protect me. I know that I keep saying that I’m a big girl but I was just joking, I’m not a big girl, I’m a crybaby. I want you to stay with me please.” She cried and I was at a loss of words.
“I’m sorry Nevie but this is important so I can’t stay. Your aunt will protect you and when I get back, I promise we’ll catch that monster together and send him away.” I tried to calm her down as I wiped her tears.
“No, no no. I want to go with you. Please take me with you mummy, I promise I won’t cause any trouble. Please take me with you.” Nevaeh hollered and this time, she was kicking and crying in my grasp.
She could be difficult sometimes but she had never behaved this way. I wonder why she just had to do this now, I’m already running late and the others are waiting.
Is she really that scared or is she just overreacting? It doesn’t really matter anyway, I just can’t take her with me. I’m going to the Crescent Moon Pack, if it had been anywhere else then I wouldn’t have hesitated taking her but I can’t take the risk of taking her there with me.
What if Zephyr gets suspicious or finds out the truth? He’s a cruel man and there’s no doubt that he’ll try to take my daughter away from me at all costs. I can’t let that happen, I won’t be able to survive if that happens. Nevaeh means the whole world to me. The thought of him finding out about his daughter springs up real fear in me that causes goosebumps to overtake my skin. I take a deep breath and try to dismiss the thought. I don’t care if I have to be harsh with her but I just can’t let her come with me, it’s too risky. Zephyr must never find out that he has a daughter with me or all hell will be let loose as we know it.
“Listen to me Nevaeh, stop being so stubborn. I’m going for work so I can’t take you with me and that’s final.” I said conclusively and carefully pulled her away from me, making sure not to use too much force.
I turned my back to leave and I heard her scream, fear instantly arose in me and I turned back to see that she had just started crying again. Elsie tried to control her.
“It’s OK, Nevie. Please stop crying, you’re too beautiful to be crying so much. Grandma and I are right here, we’ll stay with you at all times and you can play with Elaine. Your mummy will be back very soon.” Elsie also tried to reason with her.
“No, I want to go with my Mummy. I want to go with my mummy.” She kept chanting and I could hardly hold back seeing my daughter in this state but I knew what was at stake and I wasn’t ready to take the chances so I continued towards the exit so I could join the others outside.
“Evelyn please hold on.” Ana called and I paused and turned back. “Yes?” I probed.
“You should take Nevaeh with you, you know how she can be, we won’t be able to handle her and if she keeps crying like this, she’ll fall ill and we don’t want that.” Ana said and I was shocked but also partially relieved.
“But mother, you are fully aware of the risk she would be taking if she took Nevie with her.” Elsie chipped in. “Believe me, I am fully aware and if it were up to me, I would never want Evelyn to go through such a situation but I just can’t bear to see Nevaeh in this state. Evelyn, you’re a smart and brave girl, you’ve been through worse situations and emerged victorious so this shouldn’t be any different. You can simply pretend that Nevaeh is the daughter of one of your retinue, you just have to go there, find out what they need and come back. He never has to know.” Ana said, and I liked the idea because it would give me a chance to still be with my daughter but I was still scared. The Zephyr I remember can be very keen when he wants to be.
“If only it were that easy.” I blurted before I could stop myself. “It will be, I know you Evelyn and I’m a hundred percent sure you can pull it off but if you’re still not sure about it, you don’t have to take Nevie with you. You can just leave her here with us, you can be sure we’ll take very good care of her.” Elsie said with a smile and I somehow took it as a challenge.
Of course I’d done much more dangerous things in the past but I’m still here so what’s this little task that I can’t handle? It isn’t a matter of life or death but something much more, my daughter is concerned and that’s why I’m a bit skeptical but I’m sure I can pull it off. I’ll just follow Ana’s advice.
“OK. Neveah, come on, we have to go now.” I said exasperatedly and the once crying girl instantly chirped in excitement, detached from Elsie and ran to me. She really is a drama queen and I’m certain she didn’t take it from me.
“Good luck and may Selene always be with you.” They both bade and I waved back at them and left with Nevaeh’s hand in mine.
I had just thought that this would be a simple task which I would easily accomplish and return to my normal life but little did I know that a new chapter of my life was just about to open.
