Rejected By My Mate, Chosen By Fate -
Chapter 34
My throat went dry as I read through the contents of the letter. The letter simply stated the huge conspiracy that was supposed to take place if I didn’t stop it. The letter was addressed to Margallo’s boyfriend, Jared and it stated that she was going to kill Alpha Richard today.
The sentence came as such a rude shock that I had to read it multiple times just to be sure that I wasn’t seeing things. I had known Margallo was busy plotting things but never in my wildest dreams had I expected something like this. Such a huge plot against the Alpha.
“It’s a huge shock, yes, but won’t you read the rest of the letter?” Tara asked, managing to snap me out of my shell shocked state.
‘Yes.’ I agreed and proceeded to read further. Not only was it written in the letter that she was going to kill the Alpha today, it also stated how she was going to do it.
The letter revealed that she would poison the drink that her father, Alpha Turner, was going to present to Alpha Richard as a toast.
Of course, it would be the perfect plan. If Alpha Richard was killed by the poison, no one would dare point a finger at Alpha Turner. The innocent staff would probably be blamed. Margallo’s father, Alpha Turner was already present at the celebration; he surely wouldn’t miss his own daughter’s birthday party and the mating ceremony that would take place right after.
Margallo was heartless enough to try to set up her own father but what I still couldn’t understand was the reason why she would want to kill Alpha Richard.
So far he’d been her biggest supporter, defending her when everyone else clearly hated her so why would she kill the one person who was apparently on her side?
No matter how much I thought about it, none of it made any sense at all.
I shook the thought away, deciding to read the rest of the letter to see if it would hold any other useful information when the paper was snatched out of my hands all of a sudden.
I turned around and nearly froze when I saw that it was Margallo. She had the deepest glare I’d ever seen and if looks were weapons, I would be dead by now.
Her mean stare soon twisted into a mischievous smile which baffled me all the more.
“Poor thing, you think you’re so smart. Don’t you? But you’re quite slow and very foolish. You think I didn’t notice? I knew all along that you’ve been keeping an eye on me. I saw you the other day when you were peeking into my room through the window and that confirmed my doubts about you.
You wanted to expose me, didn’t you? Well I’d like to see you try. How will you tell everyone about the webs I’ve spun when you don’t even have a voice? Whether you try to stop it or not, Alpha Richard will die today, he must die today and there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it.” Margallo said and laughed sadistically.
“You were looking for this, right? You wanted evidence so bad. Well, come and get it.” She said and brought out a lighter and set the letter on fire before my very eyes. She then dropped it on the floor while it continued to burn.
As the paper burnt to ashes in the simmering flame, my brain finally kicked into action and I crouched down heavily and tried my best to save what was left of the evidence, not caring that my hands would get burnt.
“Evelyn, be careful! You’ll hurt yourself.” Tara cautioned me but I didn’t have the time to listen to her.
‘I don’t care, I have to reveal the truth. I have to save the Alpha at all costs.’ I said as tears began to pour down my cheeks.
I was able to put out the flames with my hands but it was already useless by that time. Half of the letter was already burnt out and nothing on what was left of it was legible. Margallo just smirked at me like she’d received the greatest gift in the world.
I stared at the burnt letter with anger and pain, more tears coming to my eyes. No, I couldn’t let this happen. I wouldn’t be able to take any more death. If Alpha Richard was killed, what would happen to Elsie? She wouldn’t be able to take it.
What would happen to the pack without their Alpha? The whole pack would be put at risk of attacks without a leader. There was too much at stake here, I had to do something at all costs.
And then it finally clicked, Alpha Richard couldn’t have had the drink yet. The party had started not too long ago. There was still hope, there was still a chance to save him somehow.
I had to get to the Grand Hall as soon as possible and reveal the truth to everyone. I still had the chance to fix everything and I would take it no matter the cost.
I took quick steps towards the door, hoping to take Margallo by surprise but she was quick and she stopped me, grabbing a tight hold of my arm.
“And where do you think you’re going, little mute? Though you can’t speak, you’re still a huge problem for me because you already know my plan and I make it a habit to get rid of my problems. You’re lucky I need to get back to the party soon or I would have ended your life and done away with your miserable body.
It’s already quite evident that no one would miss you. But since I don’t have the luxury of time, I’ll keep you here for the meantime and deal with you when the party’s over.” She threatened.
I shook my head continuously, pleading with her with my eyes to stop her devious plans but she practically ignored me, throwing me on the bed and almost causing me to fall flat on my stomach. Terrible harm could have come to my child if my impulses hadn’t kicked in, causing my hands to break the fall.
I turned back to her and glared at her viciously. I wished for nothing more than to wipe away that look of content on her face with a tight slap.
“You’ll stay locked in here till the party’s over because I can’t have you causing me any trouble. Don’t worry, you won’t be alone for too long. I promise I’ll be back after the party and then I’ll give you a suitable punishment. You’ll have to say goodbye to this world sooner than you think.” Margallo said and giggled maniacally while I just stared at her in fear and shock.
I took a deep breath, trying to gather my strength so I could get up but before I knew it, she was out of the room in the blink of an eye and next thing I heard was the clicking of a lock.
The adrenaline rush caused me to move to the door quickly, despite the pain I was starting to feel in my lower belly. I tried to open the door but it was locked, as expected.
I tried once more and began knocking on the door incessantly. I couldn’t call out for anyone because you know, I’m mute.
I continued knocking on the door hard, not caring that my hand would bleed. I sincerely hoped that somehow, everyone wasn’t at the party and that there was still perhaps someone in the hallway who would hear my knocks and come to my rescue.
I kept knocking for a few minutes, only pausing when the sting on my knuckles became unbearable, my hand red as a cherry. I sighed and slumped down, my back resting on the door for support.
More tears began flowing down my cheeks. What am I going to do? I’ve been so adamant on finding out the truth but now that I finally know I feel useless! What’s the use of being aware of the truth, knowing what was going to happen next but being unable to stop it.
I kept weeping silently and praying to Selene to take pity on me and send some help to me. I wouldn’t be able to take it if Margallo succeeded because even if I somehow managed to expose her after she’d carried out her plan, it would practically be of no use because the Alpha would already be dead and nothing would be able to bring him back.
A few minutes passed but nothing happened and the minutes were starting to feel like hours. I was just about to give up when I heard a sound just outside the door.
It sounded like something falling and after the crashing sound came the sound of grumbling, instantly alerting me that someone was nearby.
I immediately gained strength from an unknown force and got up, before resuming knocking on the door frantically.
I hear footsteps but then, they suddenly stop and a few minutes later, I hear a woman’s voice at the door.
“Anyone there?” She questioned, her voice giving away her fright. Once again, the issue of my being mute stared back at me in the face and I bit on my bottom l*p, trying to push down that familiar inferior feeling and trying my best to focus on the more important issue at hand.
I continued knocking but the woman who was probably a maid didn’t get the clue that it could be me. My feet ached badly, my back almost felt like it wasn’t even mine and the pain in my lower belly was starting to increase, maybe due to the adrenaline.
I take a quick look around, trying to find an easier way to let the maid know that I was the one in the room.
My eyes instantly catch sight of the window and I drag myself to it. I grab hold of one of my flats and use it to bang on the window. This surely grabs the attention of the maid who instantly notices me before rushing towards the window and regarding me with a shocked expression.
“Oh my goodness, Princess Evelyn. What are you doing inside?” She questioned and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes.
The Alpha was about to be killed and here she was asking such meaningless questions. I gestured towards the door, trying to relay to her that it was locked.
Thankfully, she catches on quickly. “The door has been locked from the outside and there’s nothing I can do because I don’t have the key.” She said and I g*****d, biting my l*p some more.
I can feel my heart rate increasing exponentially. I know it’s not good to worry so much in this condition but I honestly can’t ignore such a serious matter.
‘What do we do now Tara? We’re trapped, we tried our best but……. Could it be really over?’ I questioned, more tears pouring down my cheeks.
“No Evelyn, don’t say that please. It’s not over yet. We’ll find a way, I promise.” Tara encouraged me and I took a deep breath, willing my heart rate to tone back to normal.
“Wait, I have an idea!” The maid suddenly said, stealing back my attention.
“I learned how to pick a lock when I was very young. I haven’t done it since I became a maid in the palace, mostly because I didn’t want to get into trouble. I’ll try and see if I can get the door open.” The maid said and a small smile lit my face as I nodded my head in encouragement.
She reached for her hair and pulled out a Bobby pin before bending it open and inserting one edge in the lock.
I watched tentatively as she toyed with the lock, her eyes firmly on what she was doing. Barely two minutes later, I heard an unmistakable click and then the door opened. She came into the room and paused, probably surprised at seeing my very distraught state.
“Are you OK, Princess Evelyn?” She questioned me but I had no time to answer such questions. I instantly raced out of the room, practically ignoring her and I headed for the Grand Hall, my heart racing in my chest.
Several thoughts flowed through my mind. Will I be able to get there in time and even if I did, would anyone believe me without any evidence?
