Rejected By My Mate, Chosen By Fate -
Chapter 37
Special Chapter: Kayden’s POV
I carefully laid Evelyn on the bed while the doctor soon arrived with her medical kit and quickly began to examine her . Elsie and Ana came into the room but only stood close to the door, not venturing to come nearer.
I know how hard it must be for them but it’s also difficult for me to see the one that I love in such a terrible state.
The doctor turned to us with a sad look on her face before dropping the bombshell.
“I’m sorry but I doubt I’ll be able to save her and her child. Her condition is very critical. The poison is spreading very quickly. I need to administer an antidote as soon as possible before it spreads any further and kills her.” The doctor revealed but I didn’t let the news dishearten me. Instead it made me know that there was at least still some hope but no matter how little the chances are, I’ll take it.
“What antidote? What do you need? We have to save her at all costs.” I told the doctor.
“I have the antidote here with me. It’s simply activated charcoal. The activated charcoal that is used to treat poisoning is a powder that is mixed with a liquid. Once mixed, it can be given as a drink or through a tube that has been placed through the mouth and into the stomach. Due to her current state, it seems I’ll have to go with the latter. She apparently isn’t in a condition to drink anything so Enteral feeding will be best. Have someone bring some lukewarm water quickly, as soon as possible. This is an antidote that will help to neutralize the poison and stop its reactions but it can only work if administered quickly.
We can’t take any more risks especially as she’s pregnant and seems to be in a state of stupor.” The doctor said and Elsie called one of the maids into the room. Before instructing her to quickly get some water, just as the doctor had requested.
Meanwhile, I never left Evelyn’s side, I kept holding onto her hand and rubbing on it, trying to do my best to keep her alive. With each passing minute, her condition seemed to worsen and as it did, my hope began to fade away little by little as well.
“Evelyn please don’t leave me, stay with me please. Please stay with me and I promise to never doubt you again. I’ll always love you to the end of time and I’ll ensure that nothing ever happens to you but please just stay with us.” I chanted continuously and kissed her hand and surprisingly, her hand moved in mine a bit.
Just then, the maid returned with some water and the doctor mixed the powdered charcoal with some water.
She then brought out a tiny tube and went ahead to carefully pass it through Evelyn’s mouth and slowly down her throat. The doctor’s actions caused her to jolt a bit, her face contorting in pain but she never opened her eyes once. It would have been comforting to know that she was at least still alive but the scene before me was just too painful to watch.
The doctor only stopped when the tube had almost completely disappeared into Evelyn’s mouth. She then quickly sucked in some of the activated charcoal suspension into a syringe and connected it to the orogastric tube.
The liquid went through the tube and into Evelyn’s mouth. The doctor continued this until she had given Evelyn a good amount of the suspension.
She then disconnected the syringe carefully and very cautiously removed the tube. She then wore Evelyn an oxygen mask. Evelyn’s chest evidently rose up as if she had just taken a deep breath.
“Is something wrong with her?” Ana questioned.
“No, it’s just the antidote reacting to the poison. You see what activated charcoal does is that it can absorb or bind drugs, poisons and toxins to it. This helps rid the body of unwanted substances. Though I’ve administered the antidote, she may not completely be out of danger, what worries me most is the safety of her unborn child. The poison may have affected the baby and I don’t know if the child could survive it if he or she stayed longer in the patient’s womb.
The longer the baby stays the more dangerous it becomes for the child because while in the womb, babies get most of their nutrition through the umbilical cord, but they also swallow and digest their moms’ amniotic fluid. In fact, 10-20% of the protein a baby consumes comes from what she drinks. She drank a poisoned drink so there’s a high percentage chance that her child could be affected.
If the fetus absorbs the poison then chances of survival are very low to non-existent and in order to avoid that, she has to give birth to the baby now.” The doctor said and my eyes widened in shock.
“What?!” Ana and Elsie chorused as well. “Yes, it’s the only way to ensure the safety of the mother and child. If she births the baby now, I’ll be able to focus on completely detoxifying her system of the poison without having to worry about the child. It’ll save us from a whole lot of risks.” The doctor informed us.
“But she’s only seven months gone.” Elsie protested.
“If I remember correctly, she’s about 29 weeks along so it’s partially safe. I’m sorry but this is a risk that we’re going to have to take or the baby may not survive at all if allowed to develop fully. You have to make a decision but please decide quickly, there’s not much time to waste. The patient’s and her baby’s lives depend on it.” The doctor said resignedly.
“Please excuse me for a bit, let me know when you’ve come to a decision or if there are any changes in her condition.” The doctor said and left the room after making sure that Evelyn appeared to be stable.
“What do we do mum? This is such a hard decision to make. Evelyn has already been through so much and she really doesn’t deserve this, she only deserves happiness so why is goddess Selene letting her go through this?
This baby has been both a source of joy and sadness in her life. The father of her child has been a constant pain to her and it took a whole lot of convincing before she decided to keep this baby.
When we thought that only good things will happen from here on out, this had to happen. Evelyn is the one carrying the baby so only she should decide, she is the only one that has the right to decide if she wants to give birth to the baby now.” Elsie said, still unable to stop herself from crying.
