I only nodded and took deep breaths.

“Alright Evelyn, I want you to take in short deep breaths and when I ask you to push, you push as hard as you can.” The doctor ordered and I nodded.

“OK. One, two, three……. Push!” The doctor instructed and I pushed with all my might, the pain causing me to dig my nails into Kayden’s hand as my head rose from the pillow. The pain was indescribable and I wanted to scream my head off but then again, I didn’t have that luxury so I could only open my mouth wide.

I tried to direct all the pain on Kayden’s hand linked with mine, pinching his skin so hard that it was sure to draw b***d but he didn’t pull away or even shake once, he only smiled at me instead and kept encouraging me. It would have brought a smile to my face if I wasn’t in so much pain.

“Stop!” The doctor instructed and my head fell back on the pillow and I breathed heavily.

“You’re doing great Evelyn, I can already see the baby’s head. Just keep taking deep breaths and push when I tell you to.” The doctor commended me and I nodded.

“It’s OK Evelyn, everything will be fine.” I heard Kayden say, once more and it was just the reassurance I needed.

“One…… Two…….. Three……. Push.” The doctor called and I gave it my all. After the second push, I could feel the baby at my cervix which was stretching painfully wide to accommodate my young. The effort I’d put into pushing had left me dizzy and I could see stars around me. I started thinking that I’d lose consciousness again. I tried to slow down my breathing a bit.

I felt a light tap on my face and it prevented me from closing my eyes. I opened my eyes wide to see Kayden’s hazel brown ones. ” Evelyn, please keep your eyes open. You need to keep your eyes open no matter what.” He pleaded with me and I tried my best to keep my eyes open, tears streaming from them.

“We’re almost there, just the last push and you’ll be finally able to meet your baby. Are you ready?” The doctor questioned and I nodded eagerly. By Selene’s grace, I’ll finally be able to meet my baby.

Kayden kissed my hand once more and said words of encouragement to me.

On the doctor’s request, I pushed harder than I ever had, even holding my breath in between and the next thing I heard was the sharp cry of a baby.

The doctor carried my newborn in her arms, my baby was so small but covered in b***d and a creamy white liquid.

“Congratulations dear, you did it, it’s a girl. You’ve become a mother.” The doctor announced and tried to stop the baby from crying.

I couldn’t stop myself from smiling widely at hearing the doctor’s words. Finally, it’s all over, I did it. I was able to give birth to my baby. Despite everything I’d been made to go through, I’ve still managed to pull through successfully. And for the first time, I felt proud of myself. I’m now a mum. A certain type of euphoria coursed through me and I couldn’t stop smiling despite the tiredness and dizziness that was quickly setting in.

“I have to get her cleaned now. Since she’s premature, she’s at a lot of risk right now so you won’t be able to hold her for a while. I have to make sure that she’s alright. Too much contact could pose a big treat to her.” The doctor said and went ahead to carefully measure and cut the umbilical cord. After that, she wrapped my daughter in a thick but warm blanket and handed her over to the maid who seemed to be acting as a nurse.

“Hold her for a bit, our work here is not done. Evelyn still needs to go through the third stage of labour.” The doctor says and changes the bloody towel under my legs. I didn’t have time to ponder over what she meant when I heard Kayden’s voice.

“Congratulations Evelyn, you’re a mum now. I’m so proud of you.” I heard Kayden say to me and I could only manage a weak smile, everything’s fading fast and I realize I’m about to lose consciousness again and due to the circumstances surrounding the birth of my daughter, there’s definitely still poison in my system and if I pass out now, I don’t know when or if I might wake up.

I realize the severity of the situation and make up my mind to expose Margallo in case anything happens to me. I have to expose her or she won’t stop until she destroys the royal family and I can’t let that happen even while I’m unconscious.

My head is hazy with tiredness but I try to fight it. All of a sudden, I feel that familiar splitting pain again.

That’s odd, but I’ve already given birth so why am I having another contraction? I gasp as something pushes out of me, I don’t have enough energy to look down but the doctor’s next sentence instantly calms my worry.

“Thank goodness, you’ve just delivered the placenta so everything should be fine now. Rosita will clean you up while I’ll go clean up your little angel and get her ready.” The doctor said and left, heading towards the bathroom in the room.

I can’t help with the woozy feeling anymore, I’m going to pass out any second now. I don’t know if it’s postpartum exhaustion but I’m not feeling good at all and really can’t take the risk of passing out with this secret.

With the last of my strength, I grab Kayden’s arm, quickly getting his attention. His expression instantly turned to one of worry when he saw the state I was in.

“Evelyn, are you OK? Should I call the doctor?” He questioned, obviously frightened but I nodded my head with what little strength I had.

This is so frightening and tiresome. My muteness has always been a huge problem for me right from the beginning but I’m really starting to regret it now. How am I supposed to tell him that Margallo was the one who poisoned the drink? How do I tell him that she’s having an affair and she’s cooking up some sort of sinister plan behind everyone’s backs?

Ordinarily, it would be hard to sign something like that but in my condition, it’s completely impossible so I opt for an easier way, trying my best to stay awake as long as possible.

I demonstrate to him to get me a pen. He understands right away but doesn’t do it.

“What do you need a pen for? Whatever you have to say can wait, Evelyn. You should be resting, you’ve been through a lot the last couple of hours.” He told me and I hated the fact that I couldn’t even roll my eyes.

I so badly wanted to tell him to just get the pen but I went on a furtive array of demonstrations and he had to give in eventually.

Luckily, he found a pen in a drawer nearby and he handed it to me. I held his hand and sat up a bit before taking a deep breath, blinking repeatedly to clear my blurry vision.

I wrote down Margallo’s name on his hand and it felt like the hardest thing I’d ever done. I really hope he gets the message I’m trying to send quickly, I can’t hold out much longer.

“Margallo? You’re putting yourself under so much strain just so you can write Margallo’s name? Why? I thought you hated her?” He questioned and I felt like crying. Why does it take guys so long to understand stuff? It’s really so simple.

I don’t think I have enough energy to write the whole sentence so I point to Margallo’s name on his palm and pass my hand over my neck, trying to demonstrate that she tried to kill me.

Kayden stared at me intensely before it finally clicked and his eyes went wide. “Margallo was the one who poisoned the wine, wasn’t she?” He questioned, already knowing the answer.

I nodded softly, wearing a small, weary smile.

Kayden stood upright, a look I couldn’t quite place due to my state present in his eyes.

I slumped back on the bed.

“She won’t get away with this. I’ll make sure she pays for ever hurting you and all of us, I promise you Evelyn.” Those were the last words I heard before everything faded and it was lights out again.
