It’s been about two weeks since I became the new Beta female and though the Alpha hasn’t requested my audience yet, I’ve waited in anticipation. I wonder what being in an official meeting feels like, especially since I’ll be expected to contribute and everyone’s eyes will be on me. The thought gives me jitters again but I cast it aside. I’m totally ready for this and I’ll give it my all. It’s a responsibility I’m ready to accept.

I’ve been attending therapy for almost two weeks now and though I can’t say it’s been fun having to remember and acknowledge the past, I can say it’s been very uplifting. It’s really been less than two weeks but I feel like a completely different person. I’ve acknowledged that I didn’t make a mistake, being born mute or not transforming when I was supposed to wasn’t my doing, it wasn’t my mistake and I didn’t deserve to be treated the way I was. I’ve accepted that Zephyr was the one who made a mistake and he had no right to accuse and abuse me no matter what. I’ve come to accept my past and everything it holds and doing that has given me a chance to get a grasp on myself. To finally build up desires and expectations. I feel like I can finally dream again, I’m finally free and the feeling is the best in the world. Most importantly, the flashbacks and the nightmares are fading away. I’m building up my self confidence and though I’m not quite there yet, I know I’ll be the independent woman I want to be in the near future.

I rock Nevaeh in my arms one final time, glad that she’s finally asleep. I carefully place her in her crib and drop on my bed exhausted. Last night she’d been a handful and this is honestly the first time she’s ever troubled me.

She was crying so much last night and refused to go to sleep, I eventually found out that she had a little fever and it instantly worried me because the doctor had warned us about handling her health carefully. She’s a very precious child and I don’t want my mistake or carelessness to give her a permanent problem that she would have to deal with for the rest of her life. I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if it happened.

I had to call the doctor in the middle of the night to check up on her because I was so scared but the doctor assured me that she would be fine, it was likely just a small cold as the weather’s been very chilly lately, probably signs of winter and she reminded me to keep my room warm as much as possible. She told me that as long as I was cautious, the fever would go away on its own before morning.

It’s still early in the morning and the sun is just rising but I’m hella tired. I couldn’t get any sleep last night and now that Nevaeh is finally asleep, I just want to close my eyes and sleep as much as possible.

I had barely drifted off to sleep when I heard my door fling open, instantly jolting me up from bed. Fear instantly seized my heart as I was afraid that the impact of the sound would wake Nevaeh up after I had put so much effort into normalizing her temperature and putting her to sleep but thankfully, it didn’t.

She stirred a bit but went right back to sleep. She must be very tired as well, poor thing. When I was sure that it was code blue, I turned back to the person at the door, ready to glare at them until they run off and go hide somewhere but my anger lessened a lot when I saw that it was Elsie.

“I’m sorry about that, I hope I didn’t wake her up.” Elsie apologized in a whisper and I shook my head. She released a sigh that almost had me laughing. “Good morning Evelyn. How is she doing now? Is she a lot better?” Elsie questioned as she went to Nevaeh’s crib and watched her sleep.

I nodded again, relaxing back in bed. My eyes hurt so much that keeping them open feels like a punishment.

“You must be totally exhausted. I’m sorry I couldn’t help last night, I wasn’t feeling too well. I seem to be getting a lot of dizzy spells lately and it’s worrying me but doctor Constance has said that it’s normal and I have nothing to worry about. I just hope that my baby will be OK.” She said, sounding unsure of herself and my tiredness almost instantly disappeared.

I stood up and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. She placed her hand on mine and smiled.

“Thanks Evelyn, I don’t need any words to understand what you’re trying to say. It’ll all be fine.” She said and I smiled.

“Pardon me for disturbing you. I’ll leave now, I just wanted to check up on our darling Nevie and see how she was doing but now that I see that you’re both fine, I’ll be leaving now. You should really get some rest.

You can take the whole day off if you want, I’ll make sure to station guards outside your room so that no one disturbs you.” She said and I was about to try to make her understand that it really wasn’t necessary but she wouldn’t even listen.

“Alright, rest now. Just let Emily know if you need anything.” Elsie said and left my room, closing the door behind her quietly.

I sigh and get into bed, wrapping the blanket around me before drifting off to a sweet sleep.

I woke up a few hours later, feeling so refreshed. There’s really nothing a good amount of sleep can’t do.

I yawn and stretch a bit before getting up from bed and going to Nevaeh’s crib to check up on her. She’s still fast asleep. I check for her temperature and I’m relieved to find out that it’s still normal.

My stomach doesn’t fail to remind me that I’ve skipped breakfast. I smile and head to the door before opening it quietly. The two guards are still beside the door and they greet me briefly while I answer them with a nod of the head.

My eyes catch sight of Emily approaching with a tray of food and a smile comes to my face. How is it that this friend of mine just seems to know everything that I want before I even have the chance to ask for it?

I try to take the tray from her immediately she reaches arms length of me but she refuses and we both go into my room.

“I know, you’re probably wondering how I know that you need some food. But we’ve become very close friends and you really don’t have to ask before I know what to do.

Luna Elsie told everyone not to disturb you as you were resting so you skipped breakfast.

It’s almost noon and I thought I should bring you lunch since it wouldn’t be healthy if you skipped lunch as well. I was in the kitchen when Luna Elsie told me to make you lunch and she was happy to see that I was already at it. She said to wake you up so you could have your lunch if I found you still sleeping but I’m glad you’re awake.

Prince Kayden’s apparently been very worried about you and insisting on seeing you despite the fact that Luna Elsie has been telling him that you’re alright.

I’m sure he’ll race here the minute he hears that you’re awake.” Emily said, her tone teasing and she managed to get the desired reaction from me. My cheeks instantly heated up and I tried to look away.

Emily giggled. “You don’t have to blush so much Evelyn, you should be proud to have a mate who cares about you so much.” Emily said and my heart swelled with pride.

I guess I forgot to mention it, Kayden and I are having our official mating ceremony in a week’s time and I can’t describe how excited I am about it. I have a beautiful daughter and I’ll finally be mated to the love of my life. What more could I ask for?

“OK, enough of my chattering. You should eat now and get some more rest.” Emily said and I shook my head.

I’ve already rested enough. I feel so light, I’m sure that after I have some lunch, I’ll have enough energy to even do some work in the kitchen but Elsie would never agree of course. Apparently I still need to recover from childbirth. Blah.

“I’ll be outside if you need anything.” Emily said and left.

I ate quickly, relishing the taste of the food before standing up to go take a bath.

I brushed my teeth, shaved, washed my hair and then took a bath. I came out of the bathroom feeling fresh and I quickly dressed up in a red mini gown and a pair of flats.

Nevaeh’s woken up by the time I’m done and I breastfeed her before handing her over to Emily to play with her.

I really feel like reading today, it’s been quite a while. I haven’t had the chance to grab a book with all that’s been going on and now that I finally have the chance to, I’ll take full advantage of it.

There’s a whole library of books waiting to be read and I haven’t even started.

I’m about to leave the room when Elsie returns. I let her know about my intention of spending the rest of the afternoon in the library and she told me to have fun. I’m sure that she’s all too happy to have Nevaeh to herself all afternoon. I can almost swear that Elsie seems to love my baby girl even more than me. She’s like a second mother to Nevie and I’m happy that my daughter can get all the love she deserves.

I walk through the hallway and I meet Kayden on the way.

“I was just about to come see you. How are you feeling?” He asked and I gave him a thumbs up.

“So where are you heading to? Is it a secret rendezvous point that you sent a message to me about but I couldn’t get the message?” He questioned and I smiled and rolled my eyes playfully.

I simply wrote him a note. “You’re going to the library, I see. Though I’m not really into books much, I’ll go with you. I’ll do anything as long as I can get to spend time with you. Our sweet Nevie is taking all your time so I’ll have to make do with what I can get. Staring at you and drinking in your beauty while you read will be good enough for me.” He said and I bit on my lower l*p. Why does he do this all the time? Flirting with me so casually despite knowing how much he affects me. I really wish I could flirt with him back, it would have been good to be able to get some revenge. I wave the thought off. I really don’t want anything to ruin my perfectly good mood.

I grab his hand and tug him along with me. We arrive in the library which I’m glad to see is still in tip top shape.

I search around for books that could possibly interest me while he helps me look as well.

We gather a lot of novels and place them on the table. I’m satisfied with the ones I’ve picked so far and decide to climb down the ladder but as I’m about to, something fascinating catches my interest.

It’s a big book tucked away in the innermost shelf of the library. It looks very old and is very dusty as well. The first look at it would make anyone turn away and not even want to touch it but it seems to have a different effect on me.

I instantly feel drawn to it.
