As we watched the scene before us, I entwined my fingers with Kayden’s for moral support, I knew that this was going to be more or less a psychological torture for him. I squeezed his hand and smiled at him encouragingly but he couldn’t return the smile and my heart stung.

The scene before us showed where Luna Nevaeh made her wish even without Alpha Nicholas’s full consent and just then, baby Kayden opened his eyes for the first time and began crying like a normal baby

Luna Nevaeh was so happy and she cried tears of joy while Alpha Nicholas just stood there, shocked. Luna Nevaeh tried to get him to be happy about it but he was more worried about her.

After Voithós granted the wish, he disappeared into the book and it closed once more. Voithós then skipped the scene to five months later when Luna Nevaeh was critically ill. Kayden was learning to sit but still needed some assistance but Luna Nevaeh couldn’t even get up from bed. She looked terrible, her eyes had dark patches underneath them, her lips were chapped and her skin looked pale and mottled and it was obvious that she wasn’t gonna make it.

“Luna, do you want to hold the little prince?” Mirabel questioned, evidently trying to hold back her tears. “No.” Luna Nevaeh said with tears in her eyes.

“But you’re his mother and he’s your son. He’s still so little, he needs your help to be able to do anything for himself. You can’t abandon him like this. You have to recover and take care of your baby.” Mirabel said, tears pouring down her cheeks.

“You don’t understand, I chose this for myself. There is no escape. I made a deal with death and he’s knocking on my door, wanting to collect. Although I won’t be in the life of both my sons for long, I don’t have any regrets. At least they’ll grow up happy, healthy and strong and I’ll be able to watch over them from the heavens. I’ll be content seeing them happy and living a good life.” Luna Nevaeh said and Mirabel shook her head in defiance.

“Please don’t say that Luna, you can’t lose hope, like this. Things will get better soon, you can’t die now. You need to take care of your son, you’re his mother and he needs you. Look, he’s such a strong and smart boy, he’s already learning to sit at such an early stage but he needs your assistance, he needs you.” Mirabel pleaded and went to where Kayden was playing and carried him in her arms.

She went back to Luna Neveah’s bedside and tried to hand the baby to her but Luna Nevaeh turned away and refused to hold him.

“No, I can’t.” She declined.

“But why? He’s your son.” Mirabel said. “Can’t you see that I’m sick? I don’t want him to get infected by me, I don’t want him to have anything to do with sickness or death, at least not for a very, very long time. Besides, I don’t want him to get too attached, I won’t be here soon so he’ll have to learn to go on without me.” Luna Nevaeh said and Kayden began crying and tried to reach to her with his small arms, wishing for her to take him in her motherly embrace and comfort him but she didn’t. She held back instead.

“He’s calling for you, he needs his mother. He needs you.” Mirabel pleaded and rocked the baby in her arms, trying to get him to fall asleep but it was obvious that he only wanted his mother.

“And that’s why you’re here. You’ll be his mother from now on, you’ll take care of him and Richard and fulfill the motherly duties which I couldn’t. You’ll have to love and care for them as much as I would. As your Luna, I order you to love and take care of my children as you would yours.” Luna Nevaeh said in tears and took a look at her child. She brought a trembling hand to his cheek and caressed it softly and in that instant, he stopped crying and laughed a toothless laugh instead before sucking on his thumb.

“But Luna it’s obvious he only wants you, you may ask me to take your place but it can never be the same, they’ll know I’m not their mother and they’ll start questioning me. They’ll want to know the truth and then what? Richard is already old enough to know that you are his mother and when he stops seeing you and I become too close, he’ll start asking to see his mother, what will I tell him?” Mirabel questioned.

“Leave that to me, the guardian owes me a favour and I’ll put it into good use. He’ll use his magic to mask your identity and when my children look upon you, they’ll see their mother but you’ll have to swear to me that you’ll love them and protect them like they were your own.” Luna Nevaeh requested.

“Please Luna, do not put me in such a tight spot. Please.” Mirabel begged but Luna Nevaeh was willing to hear none of it.

“I don’t have enough time left and I certainly don’t want to spend it arguing. You will do as I have commanded. I have always taken you like a sister, do you not see me as one as well?” Luna Nevaeh questioned and began coughing but tried to stabilize her breathing.

“Yes. You’ve done so much for me and my family, Luna and I could never be able to repay you. I’d give my life if you asked for it.” Mirabel declared, pledging her allegiance.

“I’m not asking for your life Mirabel, instead I’m pleading with you to stay alive in my stead and take care of my children. That is all that I ask for. Do you promise to do it?” Luna Nevaeh questioned.

“I swear it.” Mirabel finally succumbed to her request. “Good, thank you.” Luna Nevaeh thanked with a small smile.

“Please leave now, and take Kayden with you. I would like to get some rest now. Please check on Richard as well.” Luna Nevaeh said and Mirabel nodded.

“Yes Luna.” Mirabel agreed and left with Kayden still in her arms.

Voithós then skipped the scene to the part where he disclosed to her that he would only be able to keep up the mirage for six years after which he would implant the news of her death in their memories. She agreed and somehow convinced Alpha Nicholas to agree to everything, more specifically, emotinall blackmailed him into agreeing.

“Do you also wish to see when and how she died?” Voithós asked, almost startling to us.

I looked over to Kayden whose eyes were already swollen with tears. He wiped the last of his tears and surprised me with his answer. “No. I’m not as strong as my mother apparently wanted me to be. I don’t think I’ll be able to take it. Just tell me something, did she suffer before she died?” Kayden questioned, looking Voithós straight in the eyes.

“Apart from suffering the pain of being separated from the children she loved so much and the agony of losing her soul little by little, her death was quick and painless. When she realized it was finally time, she smiled and prayed silently that goddess Selene would watch over and protect you and your brother and then she closed her eyes and fell into an eternal sleep.” Voithós explained and Kayden nodded.

Everything that was going on only terrified me. I had no idea what Kayden could possibly be thinking. He doesn’t seem to do well with grief and I just hope he can handle it properly.

“After your mother’s death, your father was so angry that he dared to call the goddess’s book a curse on the world and so he tried to destroy it. Selene is kind and she understood that his foolishness and impudence was as a result of his grief and bereavement so she withheld punishment and let him realize on his own that what he sought to do was impossible.

The book was created by the goddess herself so it couldn’t be destroyed and he learnt the hard way. He tried to destroy the book by tearing it, burning it and doing all sorts of things but it remained good as new, unharmed due the magical barrier protecting it.

He then turned to the use of vampiric magic. He had a very powerful vampire try to destroy it with the most powerful of vampire magic and the magic only managed to weaken the barrier, causing the magnificent cover of the book to wither away but still, nothing happened to the book.

Alpha Nicholas finally realized that it couldn’t be destroyed so he gave up and instead tried to hide the book far away so it would never be found by anyone and no one else would be unfortunate enough to experience the curse of the magic of the book, as he had stated.” Voithós said with a grin, making it seem as if any of what he was saying was funny. This is the closest thing to a smile that I’ve seen on him but right now, I can’t seem to suppress the urge to smack it off his face. He’s seemingly enjoying himself at Kayden’s expense.

“He couldn’t figure out where to put it that would make sure that it would never be found by anyone so he decided to hide the book far away in his library and he made strict laws that no one was to go near the library unless they were specifically told to.

And he managed to successfully keep the book hidden but not for very long because soon after his death, his daughter in-law who is Richard’s mate, reopened the library.

You know the irony of the whole situation? It’s the fact that in Alpha Nicholas’s bid to keep my book hidden away from the world, he made the members of his family susceptible. And here again, history is repeating itself but with his son.

He apparently didn’t hide Selene’s book well enough because our dear, sweet Evelyn who is ever curious found my book and now here we are. With you about to make a wish. So what will it be?

You want to get a voice, you want to be able to speak and finally express yourself. You’re going to wish for the ability to be able to express yourself, isn’t it? With all that I’ve shown you, you should keep in mind that there will be consequences.” Voithós surmised calmly and he somehow sounded so sadistic, just like the devil himself.

With all that I’ve seen and found out, it’s obvious that it is no blessing or wish, it’s more of a curse and it always has heart wrenching consequences for anyone who uses it. And I can’t take the chance, I don’t need Tara by my side in order to know that I need to reject this offer. It’s basically a trap.

I can’t be selfish and take such an offer, knowing that my daughter or one of the people dearest to my heart would have to face the consequences. I don’t even want to imagine it. Taking out that book was a mistake in the first place and I intend to correct that mistake right now by rejecting the so-called wish.

I squeezed Kayden’s hand which was still in mine and even without words, he already knew what was on my mind and he nodded his head in consent. I’m glad that he’s been able to pull himself together for a bit despite the huge shock he’d just gotten and the head spinning thoughts he must be dealing with.

“I’ve made my decision. I don’t want any favours from you. I’m not going to wish for anything from you because the source of your power isn’t pure and only seems to give a joy which is short-lived and it causes problems and pains beyond imagining so I don’t want it.” I said confidently.

“Are you sure of your words? I’ll give you one last chance to change your mind and accept my offer. Do you still reject the offer to make a wish?” Voithós questioned, his expression unreadable.

“Yes, I’m really not that desperate. I was born mute, I’ve lived my whole life being mute so I’ve really gotten used to it. After all I’ve seen today, I no longer regard it as a disability, it’s only because of my condition that I got to meet such nice people who I’m fortunate enough to now call my family. I’ll never be so selfish and insensitive to make a wish at the expense of someone else. So yes, I reject the offer to make a wish. I don’t want any wishes from you. I just want you to take us back home safely so we can pretend like any of this never happened.” I said defiantly and when Voithós saw the determination in my eyes, he laughed instead of seeming offended and this completely caught me off guard.

Just what is it with this guardian? He’s so unpredictable and bipolar.

“Selene made a wise choice, I see. You’re quite the character, aren’t you? I love your patience, persistence and determination to put the safety and happiness of the ones you love above your own. It’s very rare to see that and such staunch devotion deserves a reward, don’t you think?” Voithós said and clicked his tongue, his eyes glittering with mystery.

“What do you mean by that? I’m in no mood for your jokes. Now please take us home.” I requested as a surreal feeling enveloped me.

“Oh this is no joke dear Evelyn, are you really willing to miss out on such a rare opportunity? What if I told you, you could get that which your heart desires without any consequence whatsoever and it would come in the form of a gift or rather, a miracle?” Voithós said benignly and I was left speechless once more.
