Lacy was laying her bed when the door to her room burst open, the same girl who had brought her breakfast the day before stepping in, wielding a tray bearing her first meal of the day, a lovely smile on her face, “Good morning, I take it that you’re much better,”

“Much.” Lacy smiled back, going over to take the tray from her hands… but the slender girl would have none of it, “I know where to put it, ma’am,”

“Please, call me Lacy,”

“Alright, Lacy. I’m Chreisa.” She introduced herself. Lacy observed the girl. She still had that severe nape bun from last time, and now that Lacy paid close attention, she had a nasty scar on her jaw, one that quite offset what would have been an otherworldly beauty. She itched to know what had caused it, especially with the knowledge that should her guess be accurate, the girl was probably another Lyken too.

Weren’t they supposed to heal and at a much faster rate?

Lacy turned her gaze away from it, not wanting to make the girl uncomfortable “Honestly speaking, I wouldn’t want to put you in any trouble should you be caught talking to me—”

“There won’t be any trouble, ma’am—sorry, Lacy.” The maid brushed the human’s worry off, setting the tray on one of the coffee tables, “At least nothing a Theta wolf like me isn’t used to anyways,”

That word caught Lacy’s attention, for she had never heard it anywhere before, “Theta wolf?” She repeated the word, “What’s a Theta wolf?”

Chreisa smiled hurriedly, “It’s a long story that would take time— time I don’t have unfortunately, but I’ll find a way to tell you everything you need to know… or you can ask Princess Anaya about it if you so wish. Have a good day, Lacy,” She stepped out with one last smile.

The whole day, that word sat at the back of Lacy’s mind, even as she went about her daily routine. The human then did her laundry and hung them on the chairs in the bedroom to dry, pausing briefly to have her breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages and some toast with orange juice. She continued with her cleaning by moving to the bathroom and scrubbing the huge space spotlessly clean, her hands groaning at the torture, but her heart content at her fresh, clean space. Lacy was proud that she had learnt these little petty chores while growing up, even though her parents could have afforded help a thousand times over, because look at her today, who would have thought that she would be reduced to this?

The girl took another shower to soothe her tired muscles, and then when she was done, she popped some pills and climbed into bed, turning on the TV. Her a*s seemed to have healed completely thanks to the medication, so she had no doubt that her body would be better too by the time Anaya came for her.

Sleep claimed the raven haired human at one point, probably a side effect of one of the medicines, and it only took the key turning in the lock to rouse her from her deep slumber. “Lacy, are you okay?” Her red headed friend was by her side in a moment, feeling out her forehead to see if she was running a temperature. Lacy slapped the hand away gently, a chuckle slipping past her lips even as she yawned, and then stretched tiredly. “I’m perfectly fine, Anaya… I was just resting.”

Oh.

With that part explained, the Lyken Princess turned her attention to the room, noticing the wet clothes all over the place, “What’s all this? She asked, perplexed, two frown lines appearing on her otherwise perfect face. “Uh, I did some washing?” Why Lacy phrased it like a question, she had no idea, but she was pretty sure it had something to do with the fact that her friend did not seem quite happy about the observation, “Lacy, we have maids for a reason… they are supposed to do all of this, it’s their job, and they are paid for it, if you have dirty laundry, just let them know, and they’ll come for it.”

Oh.

Lacy did not know that. And how was she to know, wen she had practically been reduced to a slave as well? She obviously did not think such benefits extended to her as well. “I had no idea,” She tried to apologise, but her friend brushed her off, “That’s quite okay, you didn’t know, but not to worry… I’ll be right back, lemme get some of them to come and take care of it.” With that, the Princess stepped out returning a few minutes later with two girls Lacy had not seen before. They sent a quick nod her way and quickly got down to the business of getting her washed stuff out of the room. When they were gone, Anaya turned her attention to her friend, “Ready for that walk now?” She smirked. Lacy grinned, “You bet I am,”

“You know, I was going to see Reed about your extra hours,” Anaya admitted sheepishly as they headed out, “But then I had an epiphany that caused me to change my mind.”

“But won’t—”

“I already know what you’re going to say, Lace… and I don’t think it’ll be a problem, because I, will let him know after, and by then he would not be able to influence it in anyway because we would already be back.” She winked mischievously, “Besides, I’ll be the one to deal with him when we come back, not you? So no need to worry your pretty head, darling.” She assured her friend looping her arm through hers, her green eyes alight with happiness, “The roses just started blooming today, Lacy… I really can’t wait to show you,” She gushed, her excitement slowly rubbing off on a still slightly drowsy Lacy. “I can’t wait to see it,” Lacy chuckled, even as the two of them skipped into the gardens.

“Right, that reminds me, what’s a Theta wolf, Anaya?” She asked the question suddenly, completely taking herself and her friend by surprise, for she had been so caught up observing the blooming roses of red and white that she had forgotten about the word for a moment. “Where did you hear that word, Lacy?” The Princess’s curiosity was apparent in that moment, but Lacy was equally determined not to rat Chreisa out for saying something she shouldn’t have to her, and so she said, “I think I may have caught it at the clinic, but I cannot really remember,”

“Oh okay,” Anaya nodded in understanding.

“So, what is it?”

The Princess sighed, “A Theta wolf is just the lowest form of Lyken we have around here,” She said briefly, leaving the human girl even more confused than before, “W—wait, I thought Omegas were the lowest ranking wolves,”

“In werewolf community, yes” Anaya corrected, “But over here, Thetas are the lowest ranking. We Lykens do not believe that they are a truly weaker species, so they are actually much closer to us in rank, as compared to the Werewolf culture, where they are attributed to Omega, the last letter of the Greek Alphabet, and thus are regarded the least important creatures.

“I see,” Lacy managed. She wasn’t going to lie, it was a lot to process, and she did have a lot of questions, but she knew without a doubt that her friend would reply every single one of them. “So let’s see, we have the Alpha King… a—and then what?”

“Beta General, Gamma General, Healer Supreme—Also known as the Chief Healer. Then we have the Delta Class, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta and finally the Theta Class, but we simply call the last three Eta.” The princess rattled impressively, stunning the human girl into further silence as she tried to work out the rubrics. “I feel like this is a lot to swallow,” She finally admitted, causing Anaya to burst out in laughter. “It actually isn’t though… it’s almost the same social class system you have in your human world… meaning in simple terms, Alpha, Beta, Healer, Delta, Epsilon are the high class ranks, and then the Eta are the lower classes.”

It was finally starting to make sense.

“So you’re in the same ranks as the King?”

“Erh, no.” Anaya admitted. “Technically, I am, since he’s my brother and all that… but he is my superior when it really comes down to it… so I’m in the Delta Class.”

“But how?” Now Lacy was confused all over again. She was starting to see why Chreisa had wisely decided not to delve into it when she had asked. This was going to take ages to understand. “Why aren’t you in the Beta… o—o—or the Delta?”

“Those ranks after the Alpha King rank are working roles, Lacy… which means that once the people leave those positions, they lose their title and their new replacement gets them instead.”

“I think I’m getting it now,” Lacy nodded, kicking off her slippers to get cozy on the garden bench, “So what happens to them when they lose their position?”

“Beautiful question.” Anaya praised, “They’re relegated to the Delta class. Are you okay now, or you have another question?” The red head teased. Lacy snorted and pretended to think it through, “Nerrhh… I think I’m all good… though if I think of something, I’ll let you know.”

Lacy waited for a response from her friend, but nothing was coming, and so she turned to look at the Princess, whose gaze seemed very, very far away. Lacy cast her eyes out there too, trying to see what had caught the She-Lyken’s attention like so, and then she saw Xavier headed their way, taking slow purposeful, yet leisurely steps… and then it all made sense.

Lacy could have sworn that time slowed down… almost like how it was in those movies, and a second glance at Anaya showed the girl almost drooling at the approaching hotness.

Okay, okay… perhaps I’m exaggerating a little bit, but you get what I mean. Basically, the princess was simping real hard, and the sad part was that Xavier couldn’t even notice!

“Hi guys.”

“H—hi, X—Xavier, what brings you out on such a hot afternoon? You’re like such a vampire, we only see you out at night, well unless we visit you in your clinic that is, and that doesn’t count because that is almost equivalent to visiting you in your coffin.”

Lacy mentally face palmed.

Anaya’s only saving grace was the fact that Xavier was laughing his a*s off at her crazy simile… he probably thought her hilarious, but Lacy was sure she would have thought her crazy had she been a guy. “You’re such a vibe, Naya…” Xavier chuckled softly, “But I guess I can see where you’re coming from after all… I’m actually here to see,” His gaze moved from her to the human girl, “Lacy.”

Oh.

“O—oh, okay,” It didn’t take a rocket scientist to know that his admission had greatly bothered the princess, “I guess I’ll leave you guys to it then,” She tried to stand up but Lacy would have none of it, subtly pulling her down, “I’m pretty sure whatever it is the good doctor has to say, he can say in front of you, Anaya,” She smiled forcedly at her friend, relaxing when the princess nodded in understanding. “Very well.”

“I spoke to the King yesterday about letting you volunteer at the clinic…” The bald hunk started, “And he had been pretty adamant at first, but he agreed in the end, so I guess you can start tomorrow.”

What?!

Lacy couldn’t stop squealing in delight as she embraced her friend, for who would have thought that the ruthless man who up till now had only wanted to see her miserable could be this generous?

“For now, you’re on morning duty which starts at six in the morning and ends at 12 o’clock noon,” The Chief healer continued, “You’ll be introduced to your supervisors when you come, and I expect nothing but excellent service from you.” He said sternly. Lacy stood up, quite caught up in the heat of showing a ready front. “I will not disappoint you, Doc.” She declared passionately. “Good, I hope you don’t. Welcome to the team Lacy,” He shook her hand formally, “I’ll see you tomorrow,” He turned to Anaya, smiling slightly, “I’ll see you around, Naya,” And then he left.

Lacy bent her head, her hands rubbing her face as though trying to wipe away that haze of disbelief. She was joyously ecstatic, because once again, her life had purpose again… purpose that wasn’t degrading to her self-esteem. It really felt good to feel like that once again. She felt the princess’s dainty hands on her shoulder and lifted her head to look her friend in the face, “I’m happy for you,” The she-Lyken smiled at her, but for the first time since Lacy had known her, that smile did not quite reach her eyes.
