Rejected, Then Reborn -
Chapter 50
If Xavier Mendoza had known that the girl who had started to haunt his every dream and every thought, would be present at the lunch his best friend had in not so many words insisted that he be at, he would have certainly not come at all… for he had blatantly been avoiding her.
It seemed crazy, but his weird moment with her in her room had shaken him up so badly that he had resorted to keeping his bloody distance.
By now, he knew without a doubt that someway somehow, he had become attracted to her… hopelessly smitten with her, even.
Now, who would have thought?
How had this even started in the first place?
To this day, it seriously baffled the Healer Supreme, because never in his wildest dreams had he thought that out of all the women that could have caught his attention in every sense of the word, his best friend’s baby sister would be the one to actually come out victorious.
Never.
He had seen her growing up for crying out loud!
He had seen her grow up from the wee little Lyken pup in diapers eagerly trailing after her big brother, to the lanky tomboy that had played sports with all the boys and gotten away with murder just because Reed would bite down anyone that’d dare to even look at her or be mean to her.
He remembered that he hadn’t seen much of her for a while, and then she had reared up all of a sudden, almost unrecognizable with her nouvelle girly girl ways, a catty mouth and an ear for gossip. It amused him greatly that he equally remembered being disgusted by her new personality… that like the no nonsense guy he had been back then, he had avoided her as much as he could.
If Xavier was being very honest, that was how he had viewed her from that moment till now. Every glance at her reminded him that she was Reed’s baby sister with an annoying personality. He had been nice to her, sure… but only as nice as one would be to their annoying family member they just couldn’t shake off.
But the day Lacy left had totally changed things for him.
All in all, he had realised that she was no longer the annoying girl he remembered from before. No… this was a totally different person, and gods, when he had touched her hand to offer his silent support and she had leaned into him, it had totally felt… just right.
He had suddenly began to see her in a new light.
But damn if that light wasn’t a dangerous light.
Because this was the King of the entire B***d Moon Clan’s sister he was dealing with here… His very own best friend! Now, if the first statement hadn’t been enough to shut things off entirely, you can rest assured that the second effectively and efficiently did.
At least it had for the last two weeks, that is.
But now here he was, all his solid progress threatening to unravel in any second.
And there she was, looking up at him… her green eyes shining with so much hope and anticipation. In that moment, he knew without a doubt that she had caught their weird moment too, and he could only imagine how much his abrupt flight had made her feel. That was enough to have him feeling like such a heel.
“Xavier! How nice of you to join us.” The Alpha King boomed when he noticed him too, ruining any plans the Healer Supreme had of disappearing.
With a dejected sigh, Xavier Mendoza headed over to the table and took a seat, making sure to be as far away from the Princess as possible… but the only seats available were one beside her and one across her, and telling himself that he’d be damned if he sat beside her and felt her warm presence, the good doctor chose the seat opposite her instead.
But it seemed as though he had jumped from the frying pan right into the fire.
Thankfully, Reika and Lobo were also present as well, and the good doctor truly was grateful that at least they were there to diffuse the crazy tension a little bit.
But if Xavier had thought that he would notice her a little less because of them, he was sorely mistaken, for she was all he could see.
For with every glance he shot across the room, he caught her gaze, boring right into his soul.
“So how’s the research to close the strange portal coming along, Reed?” Rieka asked, addressing him by his given name instead of his given title since it was just them. Reed opened his mouth, saying something, but our Healer Supreme caught none of it, his gaze subtly fixated on his nouvelle obsession.
She was looking lovely in a simple, deep blue off shoulder blouse, one that really brought out her green eyes and clashed nicely with her copper kissed hair that he so desperately wanted to run his hand through, pulling and tugging while he thrust his tongue into her mouth and kissed her senseless. Xavier had no idea what she was wearing underneath seeing as she was seated way before he came in though, and it was almost as if his brain wanted to torment him, because along with the thought of wanting to see what she was wearing underneath came an image of her creamy thighs in light green booty shorts, so vivid that the Healer Supreme g*****d out loud at the erotic torture, scooting his chair back and standing up harshly.
“Xavi, are you okay?” Everyone was shooting him a look of concern, but she was the only one who had bothered to ask the question. He ignored her, unable to bring himself to look at her face with all the disgust and shame actively coursing through him.
Instead he threw his reply at his best friend, “I don’t feel too good, Your Eminence… please pardon me, but I might have to take leave of you all.”
“By all means, you may leave. I’ll come and see you later on in the evening.” Came Reed’s quick answer.
With a nod of understanding, a soft mumble of goodbye and one final look in her direction, the good doctor took leave of them, his heart becoming lighter with each step he took away from them.
*******
It was cloudy with rain when he stepped out of the castle and into the garden, and Xavier took a deep inhale of the icy cool wind, willing it to wash away every impure lustful thought even as he wondered where he could go from there.
You see, the Good Doctor was nowhere in the right frame of mind to attend to patients… and there was no way in Hade’s Plains of Desolation that he’d step foot in his room where he’d be haunted even more by erotic thoughts of her and those creamy legs.
“Xavier.”
Oh f**k.
Had he become so fixated with her that he was hearing her voice now in places where she was not?
“Xavier.”
No. But this totally sounded real.
She was here.
He quickly turned to face her, right as lightning struck across the sky, sending a shiver of fear running down the Princess’s spine. “You shouldn’t be out here,” He chided gruffly, but despite her fear of the weather, her eyes still flashed in anger at him, “You cannot tell me where I can and cannot be.”
She took a step closer to him, her anger vanishing slightly only to be replaced with confusion. “Have I done something to you? Why are you avoiding me all of a sudden, Xavier?”
“Look, I’m not avoiding you, okay?” He threw at her frustratedly, right as the first drops of rain began to fall on them, “Come on, Naya, we need to get you out of this rain,”
“I’m not going anywhere until you talk to me, Xavi,” She snapped at him, her tone quickly turning soft and unsure, “I—I thought we had a moment that other time in my room, I mean, you—you felt it too, right?”
“Does it matter if we did?” He asked tiredly.
“It does,” She insisted stubbornly, “Because—because…. then it’s going to mean that these feelings I have for you are not one sided… that you could learn to love and care for me like I always have you.”
“You cannot possibly mean that, Anaya.” He shook his head in refusal, not wanting to believe it. “You cannot be in love with me?”
“Oh, but I am.” She admitted proudly, her eyes shining with the sentiment even as another s***h of lighting lit up the sky and a slight drizzle broke out, “I am totally and helplessly in love with you, Xavier,”
The chief healer simply couldn’t believe it!
And you want to know the funny part? His wolf, Damien seemed to be over the roof with joy for some reason, but all Xavier could think about were a million reasons why this was certainly not going to work.
“I’m so sorry, Anaya,” He shook his head sadly, the intensifying drops of rain looking like tears running down his cheeks, “I can’t do this.”
The Princess nodded in understanding, trying desperately hard to hold on to the rest of her dignity so she didn’t ball her eyes out and make a complete fool out of herself infront of the man who had just openly rejected her admission of love.
“I—I understand.”
With those words, she ran blindly into the rain, not even bothering to slow down as the Healer Supreme chased after her, calling her to stop.
She was halted all of a sudden by a strong arm pulling hers, tugging her to its body, and then she was looking up at Xavier, who was angrily scowling down at her, “What the hell’s wrong with you, do you have a death sentence of some kind, woman? You’re totally going to be the death of me, I can just see it.”
Rather than be offended, a bright smile lit up on her face instead, and why wouldn’t it? Everything she wanted to hear—that sweet proffession of love and duty were written bold and clear in his hazel eyes, she could totally see it all, and in that moment, nothing else mattered to her.
He had practically said everything with his silence and concern.
But as if, that was not enough, he closed the distance between them and whispered right in her ear, his heated breath hot and tantalising against her creamy neck, “Oh, Anaya…” His voice was husky and hoarse, “Your brother is totally going to kill me when news of this gets to him, but in this moment, right here, right now, all I can say is… ah, f**k it.”
That was the only warning she got and then he was capturing her lips in his, passionately kissing her right under the torrential downpour.
