Rejected, Then Reborn -
Chapter 65
“Who am I?”
This question never stopped plaguing the old Mother of Thorns.
It taunted her in her awakened consciousness, and haunted her in her moments of slumber…
And while she had learnt to accept who she had become under the clan that was still wary and yet fiercely protective of her either ways, she had to admit that knowing who she really was would have brought her much more peace.
That uncomfortable feeling at the back of her mind had intensified even more so than usual, for she had no idea why, but she had this sinking feeling in her chest that just won’t go away… one that told her that finding the answer to this almost ageless question was really going to help her deal with whatever was plaguing the human girl.
The old Hex was currently sitting in her old cottage, one of the routine things she had been doing for the past three days as she contemplated the still weird matter at hand;
The fact that the human was still under the dark hold.
Three days, and she was still in that same state with no changes, and it was sad, endearing and a little funny, for in all of that time, not once had Ace left her side.
The big bad wolf, who prior to all of this had an intense dislike for the poor girl, now simply couldn’t stay away. In the space of the three days that she had been cast in that strange state, not once had he given control back to his human half, Synn liked to think that perhaps, it had to do with the fact that the Alpha King was still recovering from the dark energy that had attacked him.
The dark Lyken wolf hadn’t even eaten since he had shifted and curled up beside her. He hadn’t gone for a run either, he hadn’t left the room, and he had annoyingly become increasingly protective of the comatose human… so protective that he almost growled the room down at one point when Lobo and Henderson, his chief warrior, made the mistake of coming to check on his mate and he had sensed their presence.
But funny enough, he wasn’t particularly keen when the female Lykens came to visit either, and Anaya and Simone and Chreisa had all come to see her the day before as well, but at least, he seemed to tolerate them a bit more, though the Mother of Thorns was the only one he could completely trust to be with Lacy.
It was funny, but even after all the three days, Synn was still very much wary of the Lyken Alpha, but that was understandable since the Alpha King was a totally unpredictable Lyken.
Nevertheless, she was slowly starting to warm up to the nouvelle sight, and trust him even.
Take today for instance, she had left the Lyken wolf with his mate after observing them for about an hour, her heart still continually warm at the sudden change of heart that had abruptly effected the ruthless beast.
So Ace now recognized Lacy as his mate!
Now that was something that was never not going to be surprising.
In fact, if that was not a winter miracle, Synn Gloom did not know what else actually was. And the unfortunate part, the girl was not even recovering to note the cataclysmic shift that had just occurred… the very thing she had been waiting for almost since she first stumbled into their territory.
To be honest, the old Hex could not help but worry, because really, what if perhaps being hopeful was just a waste of time, and she wasn’t going to wake up after all?
What if her gut feeling was actually wrong, and there was nothing that was going to be done?
The only thing that kept the Mother of Thorns still hoping was the fact that she knew that after three days, any supposedly dead person was supposed to begin the first processes of decay, and nothing of that sort was happening to the girl who only looked like she were stuck in a deep sleep where she was not breathing.
Synn didn’t know much of anything that was happening, and for someone used to having the scoop when it came down to it, she was pretty much on edge as a result of it, but she did know one thing:
That now more than ever, she and the human girl who was no longer human were connected.
In what manner though Synn was still not so sure, but something told her that figuring out who she really was, was going to be a stepping stone to uncovering everything else…
And so, here she was!
“Who am I? Who am I? Who am I?”
This time the words left her lips in a soft whisper.
She stood up with a deep sigh, her cane thumping loudly against the ground as she headed for the tiny bookshelf on the farthest side of her cottage.
She needed to take a closer look at this prophecy once again.
The old Hex found the ancient, almost tattered parchment, the very one that contained the neatly written words she certainly knew by heart.
She had no idea where it had come from… all she knew was that she had always had it in her possession for as long as she could remember.
Behold, the mother sings,
nature weeps through her lashes.
The future is gloom,
the earth is announcing its own impending doom.
Oh, but Salvation will come,
when the dark forest finally rises from the Ashes.
Synn Gloom stared at the words, hoping that some sort of cognizance would dawn on her… grace her with its enlightenment, but for all her hard work, she got nothing.
The Mother of Thorns sat there for what felt like ages, still contemplating the weird words, staring at them so hard that at a point they ceased to look like words and stared back at her, just as curious.
But then, just when she was about to call it quits, she was hit with a powerful vision that had her falling to the ground in a fit, her dark cloak-like robes almost bundling around her like linen did a corpse.
She saw Lacy, standing out in the dark forest, dressed from head to toe in black, revealing clothes, her arms lifted up into the air as she cried out in some ancient language the Hex couldn’t fully understand. Dark, mistic energy flowed from her fingers, leaving the scary forest even darker and horrifying than it had always been.
At first, everything was going on well, whatever the girl was doing seemed to be working, but then Lacy’s dark mist slowly began to dissipate, all of her strength going along with it.
“DO SOMETHING, SYNN! HELP HER!”
A voice.
The Alpha King’s.
But where had he even come from?
“SAVE HER SYNN, PLEASE!”
But how was she going to do that?
Wasn’t that the very question that had brought her right to this moment in the first place?
A sudden bright, white light appeared from nowhere, dazzling the Mother of Thorns with its shiny radiance, something I didn’t see being revealed to her and only her, and then just as quickly and as suddenly as it had come, the brilliant white light disappeared and then slowly, her old, wrinkly eyes fluttered open, a small, sad, satisfied smile making its way onto her face.
She finally knew what she had to do.
