Return Of The Prodigy -
Return of the Prodigy Chapter 134
The young man stood in the hall with a banner in his hand, overwhelmed with grief. "Evil company, give me back my father!"
All the reporters turned to look at him, their cameras taking pictures nonstop.
"May I ask you who you are?"
"How are you related to Carl Mann?"
"Why do you say that Hartley Group is an evil company?"
The reporters threw their questions at the young man.
The young man faced the cameras with tears in his eyes. "My name is Dennis, and I'm Carl Mann's son. I can testify that it was Hartley Group's fault that my father died. It was their inadequate security measures that led to my father's death and caused my mother to have a breakdown.
"They never mentioned any compensation, nor did they discuss with us what would happen now that my father is dead.
"They're an evil company, and they're lying to you! I beg you, please don't believe their words!" The young man got on his knees and cried bitterly.
The reporters were moved, and some of them even cried. They turned to Katie and scolded her, "Do you even have a conscience? This kid just lost his father, and you're already making things hard for his family!" "You're black-hearted people who only care about profit!"
"I'm going to expose all of your wrongdoings!"
The hall became noisy.
Katie frowned and explained, "That's not what happened. Please, listen to me."
Unfortunately, no one bothered listening to Katie's explanation.
Katie and the company had become the Public Enemy No. 1, and everyone chimed in to scold them. The security guards had to intervene to keep things under control.
Finally, Katie was given the opportunity to speak. "There is a misunderstanding. In fact, I went to Mr. Mann's home yesterday, and I even helped the family repay the 300 thousand dollars they owed to a loan shark.
"Mr. Mann's wife was hospitalized because she fainted after getting news of her husband's death. She's fine now, and I've paid her medical bill."
Without waiting for the young man to speak, some of the reporters retorted, "Bah, I don't believe a single word of what you said. You better produce some evidence!"
"Do you have any evidence to back up your claim?"
Katie notified the finance department and asked the director to come over. "The finance department wired the money yesterday. Here are the records." The director held up the laptop, allowing the reporters to see the records.
The reporters were momentarily at a loss. They turned to look at Carl Mann's son.
Dennis yelled, "It's all a lie! Our family never owed anything to anyone!"
Katie looked at Dennis with a dumbfounded expression. She did not expect that despite helping Carl Mann's family settle the debt, she would be treated like this. After all, it was a considerable sum, and it would have taken Carl Mann a long time to repay that debt even if he kept working at their company.
"How can you say that? Your mother was at home when I helped her with the debt yesterday. She knows about it," said Katie.
Dennis shouted, "My mother is in the hospital now, so it's easy for you to make things up!"
Katie was starting to lose her patience, but she did not want to take her anger out on a kid. To clear the name of the company, she had to handle this matter flawlessly.
"I want to ask your mother to come here and testify."
As soon as Katie said those words, the reporters heard someone laugh. "Sounds like a good idea!"
Everyone turned to look toward the entrance. A man in casual clothes was pushing a wheelchair. On the wheelchair sat a pale woman.
"Mom!" shouted Dennis as he rushed up to the wheelchair.
The reporters were stunned, and they moved closer to the woman.
"May I know if you are Carl Mann's wife?"
"Is it true that Katie Hartley helped you pay your debt?"
The reporters could not wait to pry the answers out of the woman.
Mrs. Mann looked at Katie and shook her head. "No, I know nothing of it.
"Moreover, Hartley Group didn't discuss any compensation with me. I was hospitalized because they made me so mad that I fainted."
The hall immediately became chaotic.
"Ms. Hartley, the witness you asked for is here. Is there anything you want to say?"
"You lot have no conscience and are deliberately making things hard for orphans and widows! I want to expose all of your lies and make your company go bankrupt!"
"Yeah, let's expose them for what they really are. People at Hartley Group care more about profit than human lives!"
Emotions were running high, and everyone was losing their temper. Then, someone threw a bottle of water at Katie.
Katie was rooted to the spot and forgot to dodge. The bottle hit her on the forehead.
In the next moment, other people also threw their bottles at Katie.
Adam stepped on the platform and hugged Katie, protecting her from the bottles. Cold water splashed on them, drenching their clothes.
Katie's eyes were bloodshot, and tears streamed down her face along with the water.
Adam looked at her, his heart aching. Then, he turned to look at the man pushing the wheelchair-Silas Camden.
Silas looked at Adam and Katie with a smug smile on his face.
Adam narrowed his eyes, his fury on the verge of running wild.
Silas snickered and gestured with his hand to calm down the crowd. "Everyone, please listen to what I have to say."
The reporters quieted down gradually.
Silas said aloud, "My name is Silas Camden, and some of you may have heard of me as I was the owner of Plot No. 3 in the past. Some time ago, I invited the Hartleys to join hands with me and develop the land together, but I didn't expect them to be so ruthless. "Not only did they not appreciate the opportunity I gave them, but they also used a loophole in the contract to snatch the land from me at a very low price."
"I spent 70 million dollars to buy Plot No. 3, yet I was forced to sell for a little more than 20 million dollars after the Hartleys extorted me."
The reporters were shocked, and they looked at each other in disbelief.
Hartley Group had swindled the man for almost 50 million dollars. It was so much money that they would never see it in their lifetime.
At this point, no matter who told them that Hartley Group was a nice company, they would not believe them.
Silas continued, "Katie, Adam, you never thought that this day would come, right? Did you think you could get away after cheating me of my money? It's time to pay for what you did!" He approached the platform and whispered, "I can't believe that losers like you guys thought they could challenge me. The reason you won earlier was Daniel's incompetence. Now that I'm the one taking action, I can crush you whenever I want.
"What can you even do without the Hamiltons backing you up? Even if you tell everyone that this was my plan, no one is going to believe you. This was just the first step, and even more exciting things are to come. You'll watch helplessly as I take everything from you. Every Hartley will find themself on the streets!"
Katie was so angry that she shivered. However, there was nothing she could do. The hall was too noisy, and no one heard Silas' words. He was deliberately humiliating them.
Silas looked at Adam and said disdainfully, "Aren't you always showing off your fighting skills? Now, do you dare to attack me before all these reporters? You're just a brute who can't even use your brai-" Before Silas could finish, Adam kicked him in the abdomen.
Then, Adam's cold voice echoed in the hall, "Do you think I won't dare to hit you just because there are reporters here?
"You're just a fool, and now I'll show you what despair looks like!"
