Return Of The Prodigy -
Return of the Prodigy Chapter 140
Before long, Sofia happily walked out of the train station.
Just as Adam was about to go over, someone scoffed from behind Sofia.
"Sofia, is this Katie's husband? Is he the rich and hot man you were talking about? If you ask me, he looks average. His dressing sense is equally bad. The guy doesn't even have a decent watch. I know you're besties with Katie, but you don't have to brag!" Adam raised his brow. He watched as a woman dressed in red corporate wear sashayed over.
Sofia's face turned cold as she said angrily, "Ivy, didn't you brush your teeth in the morning? Why do you have such bad breath?"
"I was simply telling the truth," Ivy Parker retorted mockingly. "You kept bragging about her husband. It's only normal for me to judge when I see the real deal. You can't lie about it forever, you know? The class gathering is taking place in a few days, so you can't go on lying about the guy. I can't be bothered talking to you. My company car is here."
As she spoke, a car with the logo of a dating agency arrived, and she swanned into it.
Sofia fiercely waved her fists at the departing figure and explained, "Her name is Ivy Parker, we were university classmates. She has always had something against Katie. In fact, Katie was her love rival. I can't believe I ran into her on the train. She's the GM of a dating agency in Alameda County now, and one of the sponsors of the fighting match. Companies like them always love good gimmicks."
Adam was caught by surprise. "Oh really?"
Sofia did not catch what he said, so she asked, "What were you saying?"
Adam shook his head and said, "Nothing. Shall we get going?"
Adam took Sofia's luggage and reached his hand out to flag a cab.
Ivy was still around and scoffed in disdain when she saw the man taking a cab.
The guy can't even afford a car. How could he be wealthy? Only a fool would buy her words!
After getting into the cab, Adam and Sofia headed to Hartley Group.
"What are you doing here?" Adam asked.
Sofia rolled her eyes and said in annoyance, "Your wife is too busy to attend the class gathering, so I decided to hold it here. Oh yes, since I changed the venue because of your wife, you have to help me book a restaurant. Preferably something grand like Sky City." Since Sofia was close friends with Katie, she had naturally attended their wedding and was blown away by it!
Adam felt tickled. This woman was certainly not shy with him.
Since Sofia had done so much for Katie so that she could attend the class gathering, Adam was happy to help.
"Sure. I will take care of it. Oh yes, why does Ivy see Katie as her love rival anyway?"
Sofia chuckled and said teasingly, "Adam, are you jealous or something?"
Adam felt puzzled. When did you get so friendly with me?
Ever since Sofia had seen Maya's generosity firsthand and attended their wedding, she was won over and felt he was good enough to be Katie's husband.
She smiled and explained, "It's not that. Katie did not date anyone when she was in college. Some guy Ivy liked had the hots for Katie, so Katie was a competition to her. Also, Katie was the school belle and Ivy's never gotten over it." Adam felt enlightened.
Sofia chuckled and teased, "Why are you asking? Do you have a problem dating her if you're not her first love? Do you have some kind of fetish for virgins?"
Adam was genuinely thinking about Ivy's sponsorship. Now that the match had been called off, there was nothing for Ivy to sponsor.
Misinterpreting his silence, Sofia glared at him and said, "Oh God, you hesitated. I can't believe you have a fetish for virgins. I'm so going to tell Katie about it."
Adam went speechless. How on earth did she come to this conclusion?
After they got to Hartley Group, Adam paid and got off the car. However, he was taken aback to see the vehicles with IRS insignia parked in front of the building.
The veins on Adam's forehead throbbed as he raced upstairs. The company was in total chaos. Four or five men dressed in black suits were standing in front of the finance department, and documents were scattered all over the ground.
"We suspect you of tax evasion, so we're going to audit your accounts. You have to cease operation until you have passed the inspection. I'll notify you when we are done."
Katie tried to stop them and defend the company. "That can't be right. The company is audited annually, and we pay our taxes. We've never ever evaded taxes!"
The IRS official sneered coolly and replied, "Do I look like I'm going to take your word for it? We are confiscating your documents for audit."
As he spoke, his colleagues helped themselves to the documents.
Katie reached her hand out to stop them. She said anxiously, "Do you want to bankrupt the company? If you want to audit the company, you can do it here. I can even give you a room."
The man in the lead flung Katie aside.
Katie landed on the door with a thud. The bump left her forehead red and swollen.
The people from the IRS did not feel sorry at all. Instead, they continued doing their job.
"We want to check your records and there's no stopping us."
"If you continue obstructing official business, we'll seize your company."
Katie was in tears, but she refused to compromise. Silas had just set her up. Although they had proven Carl Mann was murdered and the Hartley Group had nothing to do with his death, the incident naturally had a negative impact on the company's reputation. The IRS officials were making this up to make trouble for them. There was no telling how long it would take to audit the company after confiscating the paperwork. If they deliberately took their time, it would be catastrophic for Hartley Group.
"Get out of the way," said the IRS official coldly. As he spoke, he flung Katie aside yet again.
Katie slipped and fell onto the ground.
Adam witnessed everything the moment he got upstairs. He charged over furiously and slapped the official aside. He supported Katie, raised his hand, wiped the tears from her face, and said, "Don't move. I'll handle it."
Adam gritted his teeth as he said, "Do you want to take our stuff and seize the company?"
The group of officials tossed aside the documents leaving papers flying in the air.
"Did you just attack a government official? You must have a death wish."
"You have obstructed official business and resisted by using violence, you will be going to prison!"
One official even promptly made a call.
"Hello? Is this the police? I'm from the IRS. Someone is attacking our men. Please send backup to apprehend the culprit."
After hanging up the phone, the group of officials stopped what they were doing and instead, glared at Adam as they waited for the cops to arrive.
"You're in such big trouble that no amount of begging is going to get you out of it!"
"Just you wait. It's just a matter of time before we seize the company."
"Sure. Be my guest," Adam said confidently.
