Return Of The Prodigy -
Return of the Prodigy Chapter 142
While the trio were chatting, Jenny knocked on the door to the office. "Ms. Hartley, the director of the IRS's local branch, is here." Adam narrowed his eyes and said coldly, "I really want to hear what he has to say."
Katie was about to speak, but Sofia grabbed her arm and said excitedly, "Let's go! I want to see how powerful your man is!"
A bespectacled man in his fifties stood before the entrance of a room that had been blocked by the company's security guards.
Adam walked up to him and asked, "Are you here to save those guys?"
The middle-aged man smiled and asked, "Are you Mr. Drake?"
Adam nodded.
The man stretched out his hand and said, "I'm Jonathan Kerr. What happened today was all a misunderstanding, and I'm here to apologize on behalf of the IRS's local branch."
Adam asked with a frown, "Are you the director? Did you send those guys to check our accounts?"
Jonathan retracted his hand awkwardly and replied, "I'm the director, but I didn't send those guys here."
Adam's frown deepened. "Then, why are you here?"
Jonathan forced a smile and said, "The leader of their division is on the run, so it was left to me to deal with this trouble." What?
Adam was dumbfounded. He had not expected this outcome.
Jonathan continued, "However, you needn't worry. We contacted the police, and they've sent someone to apprehend him." Adam was still at a loss for words.
Even so, the contact the Camdens had in the IRS's local branch was gone, which was good.
"Fine, you can take these guys back with you." Adam gestured with his hand, and the security guards moved aside.
Slam!
The IRS employees that were trapped in the room pushed the door open violently. They looked at Jonathan with glistened eyes, having found the backer they were looking for. They roared, "Boss, this guy assaulted public servants and hindered the investigation of the police. You have to do something!"
"Boss, we should shut down Hartley Group. There's something shady going on with their bookkeeping."
"Yeah, and they locked us inside this room. This is kidnapping!"
As they were in the room, the IRS employees did not hear the conversation between Adam and Jonathan, and wrongly assumed that Adam could not have more influence than the director of the IRS's local branch.
Jonathan's face turned red, and he wished he could dissociate himself from these guys right away. The mayor, Jake Allen, had called him and mentioned that Adam was a big shot, a three-star general. Even the governor of the county would have to bow before someone with such high status, to say nothing of himself! These IRS officials were playing with fire, and he might get burned as well.
"Shut up!" bellowed Jonathan.
The officials shut up instantly and looked at Jonathan in puzzlement. They could not understand why their boss was furious. They surmised that it must be because of Adam.
They looked at Adam with a smirk as if to say, Weren't you all arrogant before? Let's see what you're going to do now!
Jonathan cussed at his subordinates, "Other than spouting nonsense all day, can you do something remotely useful? We check Hartley Group's accounting records every year, and we've never found a problem. Who told you to come here and check their books today, huh?
"I'll let you off this once since you didn't know the inside story. But once we're back at the office, you'll be tested thoroughly, and if you fail, you'll be fired on the spot!"
The employees were stunned.
"Bo-Boss..." someone blurted out.
"Shut up!" Jonathan interrupted and glared daggers at the man.
None of them dared to speak again. Instead, they turned to look at Adam, their expressions one of shock. They wondered what his background was to make the director act in such a manner.
Jonathan turned to look at Adam as well and said, "Are you satisfied with how the situation was handled?"
Adam said calmly, "It's up to you how to deal with your men. There's no point in asking me."
Jonathan nodded. They had been talking for only a few seconds, but he was already drenched in sweat.
"If there's nothing else, we'll take our leave. Is that okay with you?" asked Jonathan gingerly.
Adam said, "Wait a moment."
Jonathan smiled and did as he was told.
Adam asked, "Is there anything wrong with Hartley Group's accounting records? I don't want to make it look like I'm using my influence to bully you around."
Jonathan hurried to reply, "There is no problem whatsoever. In fact, I checked the records before coming over."
Adam nodded and said, "If it is so, you can leave."
Jonathan hurriedly left with his subordinates.
All the employees of Hartley Group stood rooted to the spot, gazing at Adam with expressions of disbelief.
That was the director of the IRS's local branch, yet he was so respectful when talking to Adam! The shock they felt at this moment was hard to describe. "Okay guys, back to work," said Katie.
The employees dispersed reluctantly, returning to their duties. However, they felt much better now that they had been avenged.
Katie, Adam, and Sofia returned to the office.
Sofia sized up Adam, furrowed her brows slightly, and said, "No matter how I look at you, you don't strike me as someone important. Adam, just who are you?" Adam told her the truth. "I'm just an unemployed man looking for a job."
Sofia rolled her eyes at him and said, "Even the director of the IRS's local branch was respectful when talking to you. Would he do that if you were just an unemployed man?" "No need to make such a big deal out of it," Katie said awkwardly. "Anyway, we should get ready and book a nice place."
"Okay! Maybe Adam can help us book a restaurant. How about Sky City?" said Sofia excitedly.
Katie glared at her and said, "It's a class reunion. There's no need to book something so expensive."
Sofia pouted as she said, "You held your wedding there, so you could help me book the place just this once."
"That would be too much of a waste" Katie said with a smile. "It's better if we look for a hotel or something similar."
Sofia snorted and said, "You're really stingy. Don't forget that you're the chairman of this company now!"
Katie sighed with emotion. "You don't know how expensive it is to run a business."
"Actually, you don't need to do anything," Sofia retorted. "You can let your husband take care of it. As for you, you can play the part of the rich wife and hang out with me every day!" The two bickered as they headed downstairs. Adam followed them with his suitcase in hand.
Half an hour later, the trio arrived at Longslide Resort.
As they approached the resort, Adam saw a finely carved dragon above the entrance, its bright eyes looking down on all those that entered.
Isn't this Black Snake Brigade's insignia? Does this mean that this place belongs to the Black Snake Brigade?
Adam did not expect that the place they had chosen would turn out to be the property of the Black Snake Brigade.
"All right, this is the place," said Adam.
The trio entered the resort, finding themselves in the hall.
As soon as they got in, they saw someone familiar, Amelia Smith.
Amelia's hair was disheveled, her clothes messy, and her swollen face covered in tears.
