Return Of The Prodigy -
Return of the Prodigy Chapter 156
The receptionist glanced at Adam and Sofia. She hesitated briefly before she made a call and softly said a few words.
Owing to the distance, Adam was unable to make out what she said. However, since he was trained in lip reading, he was able to see what she was saying.
"Mr. Jefferson, they are sitting downstairs waiting for you. What should I do?"
Adam smiled knowingly. Sure enough, Neil was around. He did not get anxious, though. Since he was here on business, it was rude for him to charge into the office uninvited.
An hour later, Sofia could no longer bear it. She said huffily, "Adam, are you going to do it yet?"
Adam said nothing.
Two hours later, Sofia gritted her teeth and asked, "What about now then?"
Adam remained quiet.
After three hours had passed, Sofia gave up and said, "You are so stubborn."
Adam did not respond.
Time passed hour by hour.
They had arrived at noon, but it was already late afternoon and almost time for people to clock out. Sofia was exhausted from all the waiting. She said, "I'm famished. Shall I order some takeout?" Adam was mute as a boulder.
The receptionist finally walked over and said hesitantly, "You may go upstairs."
Adam stood up and smiled. "Thanks."
Sofia instantly felt invigorated and followed Adam into the lift. When they got upstairs, the secretary showed them to Neil's office.
Neil stood with his back to the door as he looked out the French windows admiring the sunset. Gold light scattered into the office warming it up instantly.
"Mr. Jefferson, he's here," reminded the secretary.
Neil turned around, smiled, and said, "My bad. It's been a long day, but I finally have the time to see you. Isn't the sunset beautiful? It's too bad it never lasts."
Is he referring to the Hartley Group?
Adam smiled and said, "Mr. Jefferson, I am here on behalf of the Hartley Group to talk business. As I understand, we've always had a great business relationship. What made you change your mind?"
Neil did not answer. Instead, he questioned the pair before him, "Are you the company representatives? Why didn't Katie come personally?"
Adam smiled and replied, "She has some other matters to attend to, but I have the same authority."
Neil did not acknowledge this, instead asking Adam, "I hear you married into the family. Is that true?"
Adam did not get upset and simply admitted it. "It's true."
Neil continued, "It's not easy for a man to marry into someone's family, right? Do they treat you like an animal?"
Adam frowned as he walked up to the couch and took a seat. He said, "Mr. Jefferson, let's talk about business."
Neil shook his head and said, "I have nothing to say to you. My business with you ends now, so you can make yourself scarce."
Adam narrowed his eyes.
Sofia promptly wanted to explode. She said angrily, "What do you mean? Did we spend all afternoon waiting for you, just to hear this from you?"
Neil smiled coldly and said, "Did I tell you to wait? You did it on your own accord."
Sofia went speechless in embarrassment. She turned to look at Adam and said huffily, "See that? You were polite, but they didn't show you the same courtesy. They were out to get us and simply wanted to mess with us."
Adam naturally knew why Mr. Jefferson was doing this to them. He said coldly, "Mr. Jefferson, we were working together just fine. Do you really have to hit us when we're down?"
Neil pulled out a cigar, clipped the tip, and put it into his mouth. He scoffed and said, "Who do you think you are? Do you even have the authority to speak to me? You have overestimated yourself. Just because you married a rich wife, doesn't make you better. Even if Katie came personally and knelt to beg me, it won't change my mind about cutting ties with you.
"You have only yourselves to blame for offending the wrong man. How dare you go against the Camden family? The Alameda County Chamber of Commerce has already blacklisted you. The Hartley Group is finished. If you know any better, you should just get lost. I don't want to get implicated by you!"
Adam sneered coolly and said, "Are you afraid that the Camden family might finish you off as well?"
Neil lit the cigar and took a puff before he said, "That goes without saying. Would I feel threatened by the likes of you?"
Adam stood up and said coldly, "I'm the one you should be scared of! The Camden family might be able to do something to you in time, but I have the power to finish you off immediately!"
Neil burst out laughing. "You must be joking, right? Do I look scared to you? Why are you begging me if you are that powerful? I suggest you run along and make yourself scarce. You are too green to know better!"
Adam nodded before heading to the door. "I hope you'll still be in the mood to laugh in a moment."
Sofia was stunned. She hurriedly followed behind Adam and asked quizzically, "Is that it? Are we leaving?"
Adam said nothing, just sent Black Dragon a text message upon entering the lift.
The two got into the car but did not leave immediately and simply waited quietly.
"What are you up to? Why aren't you teaching him a lesson? How could you just leave?" Sofia asked in bewilderment.
Adam smiled. "Patience. Just wait!"
Sofia paused briefly before she said in astonishment, "Did you do something already? When did you do it? Why didn't I know? What do you plan on doing to them? Are you going to destroy the company? Are you going to finish them off just like Rivers Bank?" She was as curious as a cat.
As she spoke, a black car pulled up in front of Sunshine Group and reporters got off the vehicle holding cameras.
Sofia was even more clueless now. "Did you tell the reporters to come? What are you up to?"
"I want to make an example of him!" Adam smiled and said.
Sofia felt utterly puzzled.
As time passed, more and more reporters gathered at Sunshine Group and things were starting to get chaotic.
Neil came downstairs when he heard about the situation. He frowned as he asked, "What's going on?"
"I don't know either. Reporters suddenly showed up at the company insisting there was breaking news," replied the security guard at a complete loss.
Neil furrowed his brows and could not help feeling worried. He said impatiently, "Tell them to leave."
The security guards went about clearing the crowd immediately.
Just when the security guards were clearing the crowd, police cars drove toward Sunshine Group. After pulling up, a few cops got off the cars and entered the company, and went straight for Neil.
"Are you Neil Jefferson?" asked a cop.
Neil nodded automatically.
The cop pulled out his cuffs and snapped them on Neil's wrists. He said coldly, "We have received intel that you're involved in a murder. Please come with me to the police station and assist with the investigation." Neil was flabbergasted. "There must be some mistake!" said he. "You have the wrong person. I didn't kill anyone."
The cops disregarded his words and took him along. When they got to the company entrance, they halted.
The reporters instantly went into a commotion when they saw Neil in cuffs. They pulled out their cameras and kept snapping the CEO's pictures.
Neil quickly raised his hands to cover his face. Sadly, there were simply too many reporters and they had caught him from every angle. There was no stopping them.
"Stop taking my pictures. No pictures." Neil kept shouting, but no one gave a damn.
"Let's go. Didn't you want to take me to the police station?" Neil kept urging the cop.
The cop replied coldly, "How can we leave with so many people blocking the way? We're not in a hurry, so it's safer to wait for everyone to leave first. We won't want a stampede to happen, right?" Neil's face turned red in embarrassment!
