Sweet Subterfuge novel by Trina Duo -
Chapter 480
News of Roland's death had somehow leaked out.
The entrance to the alley was filled with cars, so he had to instruct his driver to park the car a street away and walk there himself. It was already late at night.
Normally, Roland would have already gone to bed at this hour. There wouldn't have been any lights switched on in Pine Mansion. However, today the whole mansion was brightly lit. Every spot was crowded with people coming and going out of the mansion. Everyone was dressed in dark clothing that blended into the darkness as they walked along the alleyway.
Ben stood at the entrance of Pine Mansion to receive guests who came to pay their respects.
His eyes were swollen from crying and the expression on his face was one of sorrow.
When he saw Kevan, he couldn't help but shed a tear.
"Young Mr. Rogers, you've finally returned!"
Pursing his lips tightly, Kevan's face was tense as he stared at Ben blankly, without any emotion in his gaze.
It was as if he was looking at a stranger.
Naturally, Ben knew about Kevan's amnesia.
Tears rolling down his cheeks, he urged, "Please enter quickly. Old Mr. Rogers had been waiting for your appearance for a long time!"
But Kevan didn't move.
"Please show me the way," he said in a monotonous tone.
Ben was initially taken aback by Kevan's request, but his heart ached terribly when he realized that Kevan had no memory of Pine Mansion.
Turning around to wipe his tears on his sleeve, Ben replied in a low voice, "Please follow me."
It had been six years since Kevan had set foot inside Pine Mansion.
Apart from the trees which had sprouted fresh new leaves, everything here seemed unchanged from the last time he came.
He followed Ben to the innermost room as they walked along the familiar path which he had taken countless times before.
The funeral service was set up in the main hall of Pine Mansion as it was the only room large enough to accommodate all the friends and acquaintances who came to pay their respects.
However, Roland's coffin was placed in his personal bedroom. Only close friends and family members could have a final glimpse of his body.
At this moment, everyone from the Rogers family was in the main hall receiving guests, while Roland's bedroom was empty.
"I'll give you some privacy." Ben couldn't contain his emotions when he saw the coffin that was placed in the center of the room.
He quickly left Roland's bedroom, leaving Kevan alone.
Kevan slowly approached the coffin.
Through the glass cover, he could clearly see Roland's body inside.
He was dressed in white burial clothes and seemed to be at peace. Violet had mentioned that Roland had passed away in his sleep.
After all, he was over ninety years old, each day could be his last.
However, Kevan couldn't believe that Roland was dead. Rather, he didn't want to believe it.
He still had not brought Larissa and Aster to Pine Mansion so that Roland could finally meet his great-grandson. Now, there was no chance for his grandfather to experience having four generations of the family together under one roof.
Clenching his teeth, Kevan suppressed the urge to cry until his facial muscles twitched.
He endured the pain in his chest, refusing to let the tears fall from his watery eyes.
Kevan averted his gaze from Roland's coffin. Taking deep breaths, he managed to get a hold of his emotions after a while.
He couldn't stay here much longer.
Kevan quickly walked to the main hall for the funeral service.
The main hall was abuzz as people milled about, talking in low voices.
Making his way inside, Kevan felt a little dizzy and his vision was slightly blurry due to the lack of oxygen.
It took some effort for Kevan to find his parents amidst the crowd.
Violet appeared haggard, her eyes swollen with crying.
Standing beside her was Anthony.
In comparison, he seemed much calmer than Violet, but his eyes were also bloodshot.
Violet grabbed Kevan's arm and asked in a hoarse voice, "Kevan, have you gone to see Grandpa?"
