Chapter 481
Kevan nodded with a straight face and comforted her stiffly, "Please accept my condolences."
His indifference made tears well up in Violet's eyes once again.
Looking up at Kevan, she opened her mouth to reproach him, but in the end, she pursed her lips without another word.
"Oh, is Kevan here as well?" Kevan's uncles appeared with their families in tow.
There were no signs of grief on their faces. Instead, they were smiling in satisfaction.
Bernard stared at Violet's face and remarked with displeasure, "Violet, I've told you before, this occasion is a celebration of life for Father. He passed away peacefully in his sleep. How could he rest in peace with you crying like this?"
Violet lowered her head wordlessly as her grip on Kevan's arm tightened.
Narrowing his eyes, Kevan couldn't stop the hostility that arose within him.
"It's natural to feel sad when a family member has passed away. On the other hand, what about all of you? Are you happy because Grandpa is at peace, or because you're about to get your hands on his inheritance?" he demanded.
"You bastard!" Bernard widened his eyes. "How dare you speak to your elders like that?"
In an instant, there was tension in the air.
Anthony pulled Kevan aside with a stern face. "Don't stir up trouble here. Aren't you busy with work? Go back immediately."
Kevan didn't want to leave, but he was also tired of seeing the smug looks on his uncles' faces.
"Fine." He nodded and left right away after saying goodbye to Violet.
When Kevan left the main hall, Bernard and Felix's families gathered together and started gossiping about him.
"When Father was still alive, his favorite grandson was Kevan. Whatever he desired, he received. What's the use of favoring that ungrateful bastard? Now that Father is gone, Kevan didn't even stay back to keep vigil! What a heartless child!"
Their voices were very loud, loud enough for Violet to hear every word.
Violet was already at the end of her patience. When she heard the sarcastic remarks they made, she couldn't bear it any longer.
Despite Anthony's attempts to stop her, Violet rushed up to them and shouted in anger, "Whose fault is it that Kevan has become like this? Back then, none of you had shown any concern when that tragedy happened. Don't assume that I'm unaware that all of you gloated behind our backs! Our family never thought of fighting for the inheritance as we have raised Kevan well-unlike your children! Each of your children is a useless leech that lives off their parents' wealth. Even at this age, they still don't know how to work hard and earn their own living!"
Violet was fuming mad. Her harsh words were brutally honest and left them no room to save face.
"Violet, what do you mean by those words?"
"Who are you calling leeches?"
"Violet, Father would be turning in his grave if he heard this tirade! How could he rest in peace?"
After Violet finished speaking, Bernard and Felix's family surrounded her and bombarded her with accusations.
Anthony quickly stepped forward and shielded Violet behind him.
With a stern expression on his face, he defended his wife. "Did Violet say anything wrong? Since Cody's wedding until now, none of you have given us an explanation regarding Kevan's assault. All you've done these six years was fight for power and wealth by kicking us out of Soaring Corporation. I did not take action against your families because I didn't want the situation within the family to worsen and make Fathe worried. However, now that he has passed on, I'm no longer restricted by these concerns. Don't blame me for being ruthless if you insist on stirring up trouble!"
Anthony was the firstborn of the second generation. After Roland stepped down, he was in charge of Soaring Corporation for the longest time. The wealth of experience he had brought about a commanding presence in both his words and actions.
Bernard, Felix, and their families were honestly quite fearful of his influence.
Now that Anthony had spoken up, they could only grit their teeth and shut their mouths in silence although they were dissatisfied.
"For the sake of Father's funeral, you'd better restrain yourselves for the next few days until his funeral affairs are settled!"
With that, Anthony dragged Violet to the middle of the main hall so that they could meet the guests who had just arrived. Kevan instructed his driver to not go home yet.
Dylan had also heard the news of Roland's passing and called to console Kevan.
Taking the opportunity, Kevan invited him for a drink, "Let's have a drink together!"
Dylan wasn't fond of drinking, but he decided to keep Kevan company as it was under special circumstances.
The two of them agreed to meet at a highly exclusive private club.
Kevan ordered various types of alcohol and lined them up on the coffee table.
There was whiskey, liquor, and beer.
Kevan was not picky with his drinks and drank the alcohol straight from the bottles.
Dylan couldn't bear to watch him intoxicate himself like that. He tried to pry the bottle from Kevan's hands, but Kevan pushed him away.
"Let me drink!" Kevan was already speaking incoherently. "I'm feeling lousy ...
With tears running down his face, he struck his chest with his fist, obviously drunk.
