Chapter 489
"Young Mrs. Rogers?" Ben widened his eyes in disbelief.
Everyone nearby turned around, staring at Larissa curiously.
Embarrassed, Larissa blushed crimson.
It was impossible for her to pretend that she hadn't heard him, so Larissa had no choice but to deny it. "You must have mistaken me for someone else."
Ben opened his mouth to say that he hadn't made a mistake when he noticed Larissa making frantic gestures with her eyes.
Grasping the situation, he changed his words wisely. "It seems so. I'm getting old, so my eyesight isn't what it used to be."
Larissa immediately breathed a sigh of relief.
Ben informed Larissa and her group, "The funeral service is being held at the main hall."
When the others left, Ben pulled Larissa aside and whispered to her discreetly, "You should go to see Old Mr. Rogers for the last time. His coffin is placed in his bedroom. He probably wants to see you too." Although Larissa highly doubted that it was the truth, she agreed nonetheless. "Alright."
She went to the funeral service first.
Both the inside and outside of the main hall were decorated with flower wreaths sent by guests.
A large black and white portrait of Roland was hung on the center of the wall.
Below the portrait was a registry table with a large registration book.
The pages of the registration book were scribbled with names of guests and messages of condolences.
The members of the Rogers family stood beside the table, expressing their gratitude to every guest who came up to them.
Larissa's gaze swept across them. She noticed Anthony, Violet, Bernard, Felix, and their families were all present, except for Kevan.
She was a little surprised by his absence.
Even if he had amnesia and couldn't remember his grandfather, he shouldn't be absent from such an important occasion.
Did something terrible happen?
Lost in thought, she was completely distracted by Kevan's absence.
Absent-mindedly, she followed her colleagues and approached the Rogers family, unaware of their appalled looks and perplexed gazes when they recognized her.
"Lari!" Violet grabbed her hand, tears welling up in her eyes. "How kind of you to come!"
Her apologetic expression had a hint of awkwardness to it.
Larissa realized that Violet had misunderstood and clarified quickly, "I came here as a representative of the Winston Hotel."
The flower wreath she sent on behalf of the Winston Hotel was placed outside of the main hall.
Hesitating for a minute, Violet hid the disappointment on her face and covered it up with a smile. "I see. Regardless of why you've come, your presence would make Father very happy." She accepted a lit candle from Edmund.
Ignoring his burning gaze, Larissa stood by Roland's portrait and held a minute of silence to pay her respects.
Task accomplished.
"We should make a move now," Larissa said to Violet.
"So soon?" Violet replied reluctantly. "Aren't you going to have a last glimpse of Father in his bedroom before you leave?"
In fact, Larissa wanted to see Roland for the last time, especially since both Ben and Violet had urged her to do so.
However ...
"Didn't Father say that after his death, no one aside from family members could see his body?" Maria sized Larissa up with a disdainful look. "She has nothing to do with our family anymore. If you let her see his body, aren't you afraid that Father will not be able to rest in peace?"
Maria's impolite words triggered Violet and made her anger flare up immediately.
Larissa quickly stood between both of them, sensing that another fight seemed to be brewing.
She stopped Violet, saying, "Ma'am, I can't go, unfortunately. My colleagues will be waiting for me, and I have to return with them."
