The Daemon’s Eyes -
CHAPTER 28
"Sabrina!", Charles barges through her front door without knocking. "You can't be serious!". He tries to catch his breath. He'd received her text early this morning saying she was going to solve the mystery of her father's death herself. She'd booked a morning flight to Durindo, since that was the only detail he'd mentioned to her that day before leaving.
He said the client wanted the arrangement to be a complete secret.... And that he'd be paid extra for doing so...
This so called client, had fulfilled this promise and the next day, she'd woken up to find a box full of cash by her doorstep...
It was just a few days later, when she's realized the money was for his life.....
Yeah, she then tossed it all into the river where her father's body was found...
"I don't really have time for this", she looks at her wristwatch. It was 5:37 and her flight was leaving by 7:00.
Asif luck was on her side, while searching the internet for a cheap place to stay in Durindo, she'd found a job opening in the Blakemore company. Sadly, after the online interview, she was asked to be there by 10:00am today for the physical interview.
She'd have been damned to tell them she lived all the way in Hermilton!!
Sadly, she hadn't even booked an accommodation!!
Charles sighs. He knew once Sabrina made up her mind about something, she was impossible!
"Let me atleast give you a ride?.."
Pleased at his change in heart, she shook her head, "you've already done enough for me Charles....", she moved towards him before pating his shoulder. "Martha is so..... Lucky to have you".
She smiles honestly. "I mean, I can't stay in my childhood house forever...", She laughs expecting him to join in.
He hugs her instead, "just don't be too reckless. And don't go talking to any strange spirits...", He teases.
He'd never fully believed that she could actually see spirits and he was literally the only person she'd ever fully told the story of her past.
After a few seconds, she breaks the hug. "Remember to invite me for the wedding!!", She pulls her box out the door towards the road, he watches her enter a cab before locking the door and putting up the 'For sale' sign like she'd asked him to in her text from earlier.
Getting to the airport about forty minutes later, she had to wait an extended length of time for the flight to take off.
ON ARRIVAL....
Durindo was just like the stories she'd heard. It was said to be the most developed city in Fredo. Well, it was the capital of course!
Unlike Hermilton where most of the were average class people. She'd heard in Durindo, the average class citizens were as wealthy as the richest in Hermilton!
Unconsciously gulping at the thought. If you didn't have money in this city, you were no different from a filthy insect.
Typically, she was classified a bit below average here...
Slapping her forehead, it was already 9:21am, and she still didn't have anywhere to stay!!
Moving aimlessly with her luggage towards the road side....
She'd probably have booked a hotel, but she was really short on time right now!
But.... If she got the job at Richard & Co..... She was going to have a discounted accommodation!!!
Shaking her head vigorously, "I'm gonna get that job, no matter what!"
"Is that so...?", A man from beside questions.
Turning to see a brown skinned man who seemed to be in his early forties. He was dressed in a coat which seemed to cover his muscular frame a bit.
"Ohh sorry", Sabrina smiles in embarrassment. "I guess I was way too loud". Something about him struck her as familiar.
"It's no problem", he smiles lightly, his eyes moving to her luggage. "Is this your first time in Durindo?"
"Yeah...", She tried to call a cab. "I'm actually in a hurry right now. I might miss my job interview!"
No cab seemed to be stopping, so he helped her call one.
"Over here, you don't wave your hands", he pointed at his leg. "You tap your legs a bit to stop a taxi"
A cab stops by. "Ohh my", she felt embarrassed she was about to run off and he didn't find it rude. "I'm Sabrina..."
"Ken!", He calls out while waving her goodbye.
The driver had told her it'll take about twenty five minutes to get there.
"Then step on it!", She demanded.
Who ever knew it'd cost so much for just a one way ride?!!
She pulled her luggage towards the entrance of the tall building. Atleast her important luggage could fit in just one box, the rest were at Charles and Martha's crib. "What do you mean I'm not allowed?!", She gasped.
One of the two guards had spoken to her. "The first part of the interview was for you to come with a suit, you've failed", He looks at his watch.
Such a ludicrous reason before she could even get the chance to step inside?!
She could feel her whole world.... Her hopes... Shatter. So fast....
"But!"
"But nothing!", Now leave before we use force.
The front door came sliding open, "I hope she's sturdier than the last!", Richard calls out to the receptionist behind him.
It was just for a moment.... Just a second....
Immediately they crossed paths, they both felt a sharp headache...... No...... It was too painful to be a headache, like something had pierced their brain.... But for just a second.... They both stagger, almost falling...
"Owww!", Sabrina cries out.
"Arghh!", Richard exclaims, a hand on his head.
"What's wrong boss?", The two guards turn to him before looking at the girl. "It was you!!". The other blamed, grabbing her collar.
"What?!... No?!", She cries out. "I just felt like my brain got stabbed..!"
"Yeah yeah", he tries strangling her.
"Stop that this instant!", Richard commands with a frown before looking to Sabrina. "You said something about a headache just now?..... So... You felt it too?" She nods, straightening her glasses.
"You're name?", He tries to hide his curiousity from his tone, since he'd noticed only the two of them had felt what just happened. Or had it just been dumb luck...? "Sabrina..", she stretches out her hand.
He looks it before taking it, most people said their name full name before a handshake. "Richard... Von Peep"
Her eyes widen. "You mean...."
He nods with a plain look on his face. "The owner of this building". He gestures with his left arm.
"Oh my gosh!.... I'm so sorry!", She bends over in respect. She heard the rich people in this city could get you prosecuted for just disrespect!
"I didn't kn-"
"It's fine", he gestures for her to stop speaking with a hand. "Is that yours?", He points to the luggage beside her.
She nods shamefully. "I was meant to have an interview here....", Avoiding the hard look on his face. "But they say I can't take it because I didn't come in a suit" "And your accommodation plans?"
She lowers her head. "Well, I hoped I'd get the job along with the free accommodation"
There was silence for a while before he asked a few more questions. "Do you workout? Or have any martial arts training?"
The question was queer but she answered with a smile, "Yes I work out. But, only learnt Tae Keon Do"
"Do you often involve in idle chatter?"
Both security guards stared at each other. This whole conversation seemed like idle chatter!
"No, I like to use my time wisely and don't even have friends to do that with!"
"Could you ever tell a rich person they're in the wrong ?"
"Depending on the situation, I won't mind speaking up. I'm new in this city though".
"Congrats, you get the job".
She jumped a bit.
"But let me warn you, never tell a rich person they're in the wrong in this country, unless you have the power to back up your words or face the consequences"
He was nicer than she'd expected him to be, although he wasn't really smiling.
"Come with me". He turns to leave. "But let me warn you, you're my forth receptionist this month"
'What just happened?', she was still in shock.... She'd not realised she'd been standing still...
"I'll tell you something girl", one of the huge security men added pointing towards Richard who was now some distance away. "He's never been this nice to anyone before.... So you better not miss this chance..." "Jay!", The other guard calls out, sending him a stern look.
The next second... She saw herself running after him with her heavy luggage...
Where were they even going....?!!
