The Failed Rejection
Chapter 27

Penelope POV

The next several days were ideal for Penelope. They were what she always imagined what having a mate would be like. She literally had to shake herself, and remember that this man has no idea who he is. He most likely had a mate out there. A mate that wasn’t her.

Penelope also had to remind herself that she had a mate, a mate that claimed to love her.

“Mate doesn’t love us. If he did he wouldn’t sleep with other she-wolf’s.” Koko said upset. Penelope was surprised by her wolf’s view on Noah. Most wolf’s want to be with their mate, not another. Penelope also didn’t understand her wolf’s reaction to the large werebear. They never did anything more than the occasional touch; brushing hands to pass something to her, or legs touching when watching a movie. But just that simple touch made Penelope want him like she had never want anyone, not even her mate.

LB was kind, he was sweet, and he was caring. When Penelope got back from her classes he always asked how her day was, and if she needed anything. He always offered to help her with school work, which she happily agreed. LB made a great study partner.

The only drawback of LB staying here was she literally had no male clothes, so they had to go shopping. LB got there on a Wednesday evening, she went to her Thursday classes. It was Friday when she came back to her dorm, and he was hand washing his clothes in her sink. Penelope felt awful.

“I am so sorry! I didn’t even realize you were wearing the same clothes!” Penelope said as LB had his T-shirt in his hands.

“No I’m sorry, I tried to be done by the time you got back from your classes, you are back early.” LB commented, and Penelope nodded.

“Yeah, I had another test today, that’s why I’ve been so focused on school. I’m really sorry.” Penelope apologized again.

“No I should apologize for intruding on your life.”

“No your not intruding. If anything you’ve…” Penelope trailed off. LB looked at her intently,

“I’ve what?”

“You’ve made it better,” Penelope whispered. Penelope just realized that LB was only in basketball shorts. His whole chest was on full display for her to see. His burn scars couldn’t take away from his deliciousness. LB still had hid tattoos tracing down his arm, and winding around his back. Penelope took a shakey breath in, and let it out.

“Here let me go stick that in the dryer for you. You can take my phone, and look for somewhere to eat tonight.”

LB pov

LB watched as Penelope walked away. He felt so bad that she caught him washing his clothes. Penelope had done so much for him, she shouldn’t have to do more. LB quickly entered her passcode, yeah Penelope gave him her passcode, she was amazing. His bear chuffed in agreement.

LB looked up some different restaurants on Yelp. He wanted to try a Philly Cheesesteak, but they were expensive. LB wasn’t able find any restaurants close by that made them for cheap. The cheap ones were found downtown in a shady area, he didn’t feel comfortable taking Penelope there. His bear let out a growl at the thought of Penelope getting hurt.

Penelope was still gone by the time LB found the pizza place. He decided to find a thrift shop to go clothes shopping. LB knew that Penelope got his set of clothes from an expensive boutique. He looked it up one day while she was at class. That made him feel even worse. LB was able to find one a couple of miles from the restaurant he found.

LB was trying to exit out of the browser when he accidentally clicked on her email. LB went to swipe it away when a name caught his eye ‘Noah.’ That was the name of Penelope’s mate. Noah didn’t want to eavesdrop, but Penelope had at least ten unread messages from her mate. Noah clicked on the one titled “please talk to me.”

I know pulling away from you was wrong. I know now that coming down here was wrong, but I thought it was the best thing for us at the time. I’m so sorry, please talk to me. I feel our bond weakening every day. I want you, I love you. Please talk to me

LB quickly exited out of the email, and marked it back as unread so Penelope wouldn’t know he read it. Goddess he feels awful, but not at the same time. LB couldn’t lie to himself, he wanted Penelope for himself. He knew he shouldn’t feel that way, but what male wouldn’t want her. LB didn’t mean her body or looks, but her inner beauty. Penelope was driven, but still cared about the people she loved. LB could see that she was fighting an attraction to him. For an unfaithful mate that didn’t deserve it.

Penelope quickly came back into the room with a damp shirt. She tossed it to him,

“Find a place to eat?” He nodded,

“Yup.” So they took off in an Uber, damn it was a small car. His head kept hitting the ceiling, Penelope kept laughing at him. He tried giving her a glare, but it was so cute to see her smile.

They first stopped by the thrift shop he found to look for him some clothes. Unfortunately he didn’t find much, given his size. LB was only able to fit into one or two shirts, and a couple things of basketball shorts.

Penelope paid which being a gentleman bothered LB. Penelope just waved his concerns off. He was going to pay her back some how. They got back into the Uber, and went to the pizza place.

They were just about finishing their pizza when Penelope’s phone started ringing. She picked it up, and held it to her ear.

“Alpha Axel, good to hear from you.” With his bear hearing LB could hear the entire conversation.

“My beta tells me that our patient has finally woke up.” Penelope nodded, even though the man couldn’t hear her, LB found that adorable.

“Yes sir, he’s been staying with me for the past several days.”

“With you?” The alpha asked shocked.

“Yes with me, the hospital was going to throw him in a nut house. I thought it better to bring him with me.”

“I don’t think-“ the alpha on the phone started to object, but LB grabbed the phone from Penelope. His bear was pissed, and growling.

“Who do you think you are? Talking to her like that? She saved me, where have you been?” LB didn’t know it but he had let his aura slip out and it was affecting everyone in the restaurant.

“LB,” Penelope said touching his arm. Her touch immediately soothed his bear, and made his aura recede.

“Sorry,” He apologized.

“Your an alpha. I didn’t think it was possible, but I can feel your aura through the phone.” The alpha on the phone was saying, distracting him.

“Yeah, so..” LB trailed off not seeing how it was relevant.

“I’ll put the word out, and fly out tomorrow.” Axel said, and then hung up. LB handed his phone back to Penelope, and he couldn’t meet her eyes. While he knew their time was limited, he couldn’t believe it was over so quickly. They left the restaurant, feeling quite dejected. They got back to her dorm room.

As was tradition they watched a few movies on Netflix before bed.

Once LB healed from his wounds they started rotating who slept in the bed. It was Penelope’s turn to sleep in the bed tonight. They both got settled in, and they would chat a little before falling asleep. Tonight there was nothing but silence. He hated it.

“I’m scared for tomorrow,” LB admitted.

“Why?” Penelope said from above him.

“What if I leave, and I never figure out who I am,” he admitted his fear to her.

“I know you will.” Penelope said with conviction.

“Why?”

“Cause you were strong enough to survive what happened to you. You will survive this,” Penelope said softly, that girl had a way of making him feel better.

“I don’t want to leave,” he confessed.

“I don’t want you to leave either,” Penelope whispered back. There was silence for a few minutes, then Penelope said quietly.

“Hey I’m not sure this is appropriate, but will you sleep with me tonight?” LB didn’t say anything, he just got up, and got behind her on the small bed. He didn’t know what tomorrow was going to bring, but he was going to enjoy his time with the woman in front of him.

Noah pov

Noah was going insane, he hadn’t heard from Penelope in weeks. He couldn’t fight the feeling that he was loosing her. Noah felt the bond weakening. Noah shouldn’t have left her, he should have stayed by her side.

“You are an i***t human, you are going to make me loose my mate,” Niko told him.

Noah needed to talk to his supervisor, and see if there was any way he could get home to his mate. He had to get out of here.
