The Headmaster Alpha’s Mate Chapter 85

Caroline lay looking at the square panels on the hospital ceiling. She believed that her heart could not have been further broken than it already was, but hearing her beloved daughter shouting, crying, asking why she was not good enough to fight for. How Tom, her baby boy, was blaming himself for why she was in this state, totally shattered what was left of her broken heart. She hated what her mate had done, that he had turned against the pack. For what? Something that had happened a long time before they had met. What hurt the most was the fact he had himself had more than a few midnight trysts before he met Caroline, and she had to work every day with some of the women he had taken to his bed. Caroline could have given in to the jealousy that had threatened to consume her when she found out, or exerted some sick revenge plan on the women involved, but she had kept her peace. After all, she understood the temptation, she had succumbed to it herself, so she made a choice, to forgive, and forget. After all, nothing that had happened in the past was anywhere close to the feeling of being in love and making love with your mate. But no, her poor excuse for a mate had harbored resentment, so much so he had put the whole pack in danger, including their two children. The depression that had started to consume her, making Caroline wish she was dead, still hung like a black cloud in her mind, and now the sting of guilt, that effectively her children had lost both their parents the day their father decided to run away. After his confessions, he expected them to uproot their lives and just blindly follow. Caroline could not, nor would she, ever, blindly follow someone who had done something so despicable, irrespective of the mate bond, nor would she put her children through that pain and suffering. However, the pain and suffering that they were now experiencing on top of their father’s betrayal, was because she was vacant inside. Ellie was right, she had given up on life, and now she needed to do something to get herself back, even if it was only to become a functioning parent once more. She did not believe that she would be truly happy again, but she could try for the sake of her babies.

Caroline felt surrounded by the Alpha aura of Zander, as she listened to Ellie’s cries, it was almost as if her daughter were miles away, and she could not reach her, the emotional exhaustion keeping her from getting to her darling girl, to reassure her, to let her know that she had heard her cries and show her that she was going to try, that from this moment she was going to fight.

Zander looked at Caroline, as she lay motionless staring at the ceiling. It was as if she were catatonic, locked in her own world of pain. Reaching out, he placed a fatherly hand on the back of Ellie, as the young girl placed her head in her hands and sobbed once more.

“I am sorry you are all going through this Ellie, I have to take on some of the responsibility for what is happening to your family.” Zander apologised.

“T..thank you Alpha.” Ellie sobbed, hearing her Alpha’s apologies helped her a little bit. He was man enough to admit his mistake. Ellie still understood what had happened between him and her mother, it was years before they had met their mates, it was done, past and should have been forgotten a long time ago.

“B…but A…alpha, if I am able to see it for what it was, and leave it in the past, why could my father not? I was supposed to be the hormonal, lead by her emotions, 15 year old, and he was supposed to be the Adult. He was far from innocent before he met Mum, yet she let go of the past, and he did this, betrayed us all, and destroyed his family.” Ellie sobbed out, it made no sense to her that her father, an adult, could not have been mature about the situation.

“Because you are a better person than most. Plus, between you and me, Ellie, most women, no matter what their age, are far more mature than us men. We kind of become possessive, and well, it is often the case of do what I say, not what I do. If Chloe had done what I had, I am not sure how I would have handled that situation, no matter how much of a hypocrite it would make me.” Zander answered Ellie honestly.

“Your mum, she will find her way back. For all it feels like she is lost, I know she will find the will to fight, because she loves you and your brother so much, and Ellie, trust this old Alpha and Headmaster. You and your brother are more than good enough, not just for your mum to fight for, but also for your pack members, your Luna and Alpha to fight for you as well, you are not alone.” Zander promised her, as Ellie looked up with red eyes from the tears she had shed, and with a small smile she nodded her head once in understanding.

Walking over to the bed, Zander looked at Caroline.

“Okay Caroline, time to pull on your big girl panties and fight, your kids need you, hell, the pack needs you, so come on, don’t let what he has done rob you all of the bright future I know you can still have.” Zander ordered, in his alpha voice, hoping the command would help break through the darkness of her mind, and not cause more issues for the broken woman played before him.

Cheryl walked into the room, and placed her arm around Ellie’s shoulder, then looked at Zander.

“Alpha, Dr Keto said to come into his office now.” She smiled, speaking like a professional. Zander chuckled slightly, he knew full well if they were alone, Cheryl would probably give him a good telling off for using his Alpha tone on her patient, but they had tried the softly softly approach, and it really wasn’t working, so it was time to try something else, and hope for the best.

Chloe sat in Andrew’s office waiting for Zander. She had been prodded and poked all over, and she wondered if she had any b***d left inside her body, after the amount the doctor had taken from her. Zander walked in, and she could feel he was anxious, yet Chloe felt fine in herself and wondered if it was because of Caroline and Ellie.

Standing before her, Zander lifted her effortlessly from the chair, then took the seat, placing her on his lap, and buried his nose into her neck, inhaling her scent, his fingers tracing the phases of the moon on the top of her thigh, as he tightened his hold on her, almost like he was afraid to let her go.

“I love you princess, you are my everything.” he whispered softly into her ear, leaving a trail of goosebumps where his hot breath tickled her delicate skin, causing Chloe to become instantly aroused, and she crossed her legs to try and hide the scent of her body’s reaction to her mate from the doctor who sat opposite them.

Andrew cleared his throat, then looked at his Alpha and Luna, waiting for them to give him their full attention.

“Okay, so, first the good news is all the silver is out of Chloe’s body, and from the tests that I have done there are no negative long-term effects of it. Luna’s liver function is good, her kidneys are working as you would expect, and her heartbeat is steady, along with perfect b***d pressure.” Andrew smiled.

“Great.” Chloe exclaimed, then turned to Zander.

“See I told you I was fine.” Chloe grinned and stuck her tongue out at her mate, who just chuckled and shook his head at her.

“However, one test did come back. That is a cause for concern,” Andrew breathed. He hated giving bad news like this, especially to his Alpha and Luna.

Zander and Chloe both stiffened, as they waited for what was concerning Andrew.

“The pregnancy test we did came back negative. However, when I did her internal exam, the neck of Chloe’s cervix was closed.”

“What does that mean?” Chloe asked, looking at Zander then back to Andrew.

“Werewolf pregnancies move at a greater speed than human ones, they take between 5 and 6 months, instead of the 40 week gestation of a human pregnancy. The fact that your cervix is closed, indicated that you conceived within the first two days of your heat, however, I would expect to find a positive pregnancy test, however the result came back negative, so I ran a hormonal test from your b***d, that also indicates you are not pregnant.” Andrew began softly.

Zander looked at Andrew, taking a deep breath, waiting for the news that he already knew was coming next.

“This is an indication that the pregnancy was not viable, probably due to silver poisoning. However, your body has not yet expelled the embryo.”

Chloe stared at Andrew, the b***d draining from her face, as she sat numb listening to what he was saying. She was pregnant, her baby inside her stomach, only her baby was not living, tears began to form in her eyes, as she let out a primal screech of pain.

Zander held onto Chloe, as she thrashed against him, cried out “NO” repeatedly. Her heart breaking into a million pieces in her chest.

Andrew gave the Alpha and Luna time to digest the information. He would wait as long as they needed before giving them the rest of the information. He wished Cheryk was there but he understood his mate needed to check on Caroline and Ellie. After around five minutes, Chloe regained control of her fraught emotions, and with tears streaming down her face, she looked up at Zander, to see nothing but pure pain in his eyes, as he tried to comfort her, yet was feeling immense emotional agony in his own heart at the loss of their pup.

“What happens now Andrew?” Zander asked, whilst still holding Chloe to his chest, as she clung to him as if her life depended on it.

“I already did the scan, and can confirm that the pregnancy is not viable, so we do need to remove the cells from Chloe’s body as soon as possible. There are two options for this. The first is a set of two tablets that will cause the neck of the cervix to open, then expel the cells through the vigana. The second is for us to do this manually in the operating theater. The choice is yours, Chloe, it is your body. The tablets cause a lot of discomfort, and we will need to check if all of the cells have been expelled in a few days. The operation is quick, easy and although you will have some bleeding for a few weeks after, you will be able to continue as you would when having a period.”

“Are you sure my pup is dead?” Chloe’s broken voice asked.

“Yes Chloe, I am so sorry, but there is no doubt,” Andrew stated.

Chloe looked at Zander, then back to Andrew.

” What do you recommend I do?” she asked.

“Personally, the operation is quicker, easier, and it will help you get back to normal almost instantly. The tablets are painful and can take a few days to work, then we have to do more tests to ensure they have done the job. If they haven’t, then you would require the operation anyway.”

Zander looked down at Chloe, his thumb gently wiping her tears, as his own fell onto his cheeks.

“When would you do the operation?” Chloe asked her next question. She wanted a day to deal with her emotions and other issues.

“I can do it now, or if you want some time, we can schedule you for tomorrow afternoon, Luna.” Andrew softly informed her.

Chloe looked at Zander, and he nodded at her.

“It is up to you princess,” he whispered.

“Tomorrow please for the operation, I have someone I want to see now.” Chloe gritted out, as her pain turned to uncontrollable anger, that bubbled up inside her and was about to explode, and she knew exactly who it was going to explode all over.

“Zander, I need to go now, and see that man who pretended to be my father, he has to answer for his crimes, and his part in the murder of the future heir of this pack and the werewolf throne.” Chloe growled.

Zander took a deep slow breath. He wondered if now was the right time for either of them to confront Chloe’s adopted father, but seeing the determination on his mate’s face, he was resolved to let her do what she must, and took her hand, as they walked out of the hospital and headed for the cells.
