The Lycan Series -
The Lycan King’s Breeder Chapter 38
Talon's
POV
I wasn't here to waste my time, if we were going to discuss war strategies then we were doing it quickly and sensibly. I stood up from the chair and started pacing around the room slowly. I had just revealed to the Alphas who I believed to be behind the attacks and was met with silence. "Forgive me, my King.... but h-how did you come to this conclusion?" Another Alpha stammered out the question. I looked over at him and felt him tremble, he reeked so much of fear. Fear of what I would do to him if he talked out of line.
I didn't bother to waste my time replying to him, I nodded to Greg and of course, him being my Beta, got the message.
"Because we've been tracking his whereabouts for the past seven years," Greg announced, taking the men and women by surprise. "We'd known for a very long time that this day was coming. In the past few years, the packs along the edges of the country had been bothered by rogue attacks here and there, usually every two or three years. Normally, it isn't a huge problem, knowing rogues are senseless beings that derive pleasure in spilling blood. But now it's starting to happen way more often."
"And you think Desmond has something to do with these rogue attacks? What if they're just common rogues looking for trouble?" I heard Monty's stupid voice ask.
"We don't just think, Monty. We know." Greg replied. "He's found a way to make the rogues trust him, and now he controls them."
"But rogues don't move in packs," my cousin said in confusion. I couldn't blame him, he was right after all.
"That's what we're still trying to figure out, how Desmond gained their trust in the first place to even lead them to battle." Greg sighed. "After their first attack that claimed the life of the former King, he and his men had disappeared without a trace. Doesn't it seem suspicious and perfectly timed how all of a sudden multiple attacks have been reported... all around the capital? It's obvious he's trying to draw Alpha Talon out."
The silence that fell upon the room was deafening, I observed their faces as Greg gave them a few seconds to let the news sink in. War was brewing, and the fact that it took these Alphas this long to figure it out pissed me off. We weren't here to joke. "....so what do we do? What's our next plan? We sure can't wait for Desmond to hit the capital." My cousin asked turning to me.
"Get me a list of the packs that were attacked and the details of their casualties." I finally ordered. There had to be a pattern here, there had to be something I was missing, some minor detail we were ignoring.
"Yes, my King." The female Beta said as she walked away, Greg turned to me and bowed before he followed after her.
I turned back to my cousin and gave him a small nod. It was a sign that I wanted us to speak alone, without the prying ears of the other Alphas in the room. He nodded back, immediately understanding me before he turned to address the people sitting around the large table.
"Excuse us for a moment while we step outside. The king and I have matters to discuss." He said, waving his hand around. "And please, do make yourselves comfortable in my absence." And with that, he turned to leave.
I tried not to roll my eyes as the Alphas once again stood up and bowed as I turned to leave the room after my cousin. They were all a bunch of ass-kissers. It wasn't news that all of these people feared me, I was even sure a good number of them secretly despised me, or didn't agree with my ways, but I didn't give a damn. As long as they had fear in their heart, they would serve.
We walked out into the halls bustling with people, though, they all stepped to the side to make way, bowing their heads down in respect. The once noisy hallway quickly turned quiet as my cousin led me passed it. It was only after we had left the pack house and started making our way to the village that he began talking.
"You don't trust them." He stated, as a matter of fact, not turning to look at me.
I knew he was referring to the other Alphas in the war room, so I nodded in response.
He released a long sigh. "I wouldn't expect you to, even I don't."
"I suspect there's a mole amongst us, someone who's been giving information out to Desmond." I said, not giving him time to respond before I continued talking, "Greg and I are convinced it's someone from the alliance, we just haven't figured out who." We halted at the door to the infirmary as my cousin turned to address me. "Talon, if what you're saying is true, this is even more serious than we're giving it credit for." He said, looking me dead in the eye. "We should deal with this with caution." "I know that, cousin." I sighed. He was right, I had to deal with this with caution. For all I knew, the mole could be someone from my own pack.
My cousin opened the door and ushered me inside. As I stepped in, I was immediately hit with the smell of antiseptic. I looked around and noticed that most of the beds were occupied by injured children. Some of them weren't even up to ten years of age. "The rogues did this?" I asked in shock, anger already filling me.
"The pups were just by the treeline, normal training section like they have every day. They came out of the woods and attacked, they didn't even spare the little kids, it's all thanks to the moon goddess not one of them lost their life." He sighed. "I don't even understand what the whole point of the attack was, they didn't do much damage, apart from the men who got killed in the fight."
"Is this why you believe they were probably just testing out your defenses?" I asked.
He released a small breath as he nodded. "My people are worried, Talon. Everyone's on edge. If news about Desmond spreads around, it's going to result in mass hysteria, we must do everything to avoid that."
"Then what do you suggest we do?" I hissed, already feeling irritated at the topic. One way or the other, everyone was going to know of Desmond and his men.
"We keep thi-" he started to say, but was soon cut off as Greg made his way up to us.
"Alpha!" He called. "I have news from the capital, it's from my sister, Dawn."
Dawn? Then this was definitely related to Avalyn, and by the look on Greg's face, I could tell it was urgent. I quickly excused myself from my cousin's presence as I lead my Beta to one of the gardens we'd passed by on our way to the pack house earlier. When I was sure that we were alone, I asked, "What's going on?" My voice came out in an urgent rush.
"It's Avalyn, Dawn said she passed out not quite long after we left," Greg replied calmly, confusing me further.
What the hell?
"And why the hell are they just telling you about this now? We left hours ago." I spat the words with so much venom that Greg flinched.
What the hell were they thinking? Avalyn was in the hospital and nobody bothered to let me know.
"I know that, Talon." Greg sighed. "It's because she's fine, she's in the hospital but she's fine.""
I felt my shoulders relax a little bit at the news, but something about how calmly Greg was handling the situation made me confused. Yes, I understood Avalyn was okay, but he was acting way too calm, judging that he had been really close to the girl. "What the hell are you not telling me?" I hissed impatiently. I was already growing tired of his games.
He sighed and then continued talking, "Lydia did some tests after she was brought in by Dawn and a few guards... she's pregnant, Talon."
I stared at him for a few seconds, trying to comprehend what I'd just heard. Avalyn was pregnant? She was actually carrying my child? A rush of emotion overcame me, it was weird because even the one time when Willow had been blessed with a child, I hadn't felt this way.
"We leave for home at first light," I announced to Greg. "Get the guards to pack up our bags. And for the moon goddess' sake, somebody find my f*****g sister." I growled loudly, suddenly filled to the brim with frustration.
I didn't wait to hear Greg's response as I stormed off. Avalyn was pregnant. This was the best news I'd heard all day. I couldn't wait to go back home and see her.
