The Lycan Series -
Bullied By The Lycan King Chapter 18
Violet's POV
I remembered how to breathe again only when Axel left the building and I could no longer sense him close.
As I turned to Sam, I realised that I wasn't the only one tense.
"What do we do now?" Sky asked, breaking the bubble of tension that had settled in the room.
Not only did she snap us out of our thoughts, a brilliant idea developed in my head. One that would help Sam overcome his dilemma.
"He is not around, I can work in the mansion. I can use the mask if I have to," I blurted out before Sam could speak.
His thoughtful eyes rested on me and from the way he looked at me, I knew he was going to reject my idea but I was prepared for that.
"Sam, I know you are only trying to do your work but think about it. If I keep working here, the others will keep complaining and we all heard when Ax- the king strictly said everything must be in order in his absence." "What if someone tells him that you worked there?" Sam countered but I smiled.
"He only told me not to see him again, considering he is not here right now, that rule doesn't stand," I said.
Besides, he broke it himself by walking in here. He looked at me as he was leaving and if I wasn't overthinking things, it looked like he wanted to speak to me.
"I am not so sure about that Violet. The king is a very strange man. I wouldn't want to do something that could jeopardize our lives."
"I don't think the king will hurt Violet," Sky joined in causing Sam and I to turn to her.
"What are you talking about?" Her comment made my heart skip a beat. I didn't want anyone to know that Axel and I, had a history together. That would only make their hatred towards me increase.
Sky moved closer to the table and placed her palms flat against the old wood. Her eyes twinkled with excitement and confidence as she looked at me and Sam.
"I don't know if you didn't notice but he was burning with anger because Sam touched your hands," her eyes were now focused on me. "He didn't kill you when you broke the rules and went to talk with your parents."
Then she turned to Sam. "She also got the best room in the quarters and he makes sure that her duties are never too late in the night. Come on, aren't you seeing the obvious here?"
Sam looked at her and then moved his eyes to me.
My heart was thumping fast as I waited for his verdict. One part of me wanted Sky's theory to be true, the other wanted to remain rational and continue lying low till I found a way to rescue my parents-and in all of that, Sam's answer seemed to be the stroke I needed for my mind to lean towards one part.
"Let's just focus on work and not overthink things, Sky," Came his reply after a few seconds. "As for Violet. You are right. The king isn't home now. There should be nothing wrong with you working in the mansion. I will find a relatively easier job and it will keep you away from the other slaves for a while."
With that, he got up and pulled out a sheet from the files on his desk. Then he scribbled something on it.
"Take this, go find Hilda," he said, handing me the piece of paper.
"What about me?" Sky asked beside me.
"You will have to work with Ash. I want you to keep a close eye on her for me," Sam said and came around his desk.
Then he walked to the door and pulled it open. "Come on ladies, we have work to do."
Sky and I scurried out of the office. While she went to the back of the mansion where most of the other slaves were headed to work on the farms, I went in the direction of the mansion.
It was what I wanted. I expected to feel excited about it because I would be seeing my parents but I couldn't help but develop a strange new feeling in my heart.
I tried to understand what it was but it was of no use. One moment I could define it, the next, I had no idea why I was feeling that way.
I got to the mansion and passed through the servant's entrance to find Hilda.
Her ginger-colored hair was tied at the top of her head as she gave out instructions at the far end of the kitchen. Quickly, I made my way down to her.
I stood by the side and waited for her to finish before I closed up the distance between us.
"Good morning ma'am," I said, pulling up a smile on my face.
She snapped in my direction at once, her expression displaying the shock in her heart.
"I have a note," I quickly said before she could start reprimanding me.
I handed her the note from Sam and she scanned through it with narrowed eyes.
"You are going to get us killed!" She mumbled under her breath before beckoning me to follow her.
I heard her but I paid her no attention.
She made her way out of the kitchen and headed to a different section of the mansion that I hadn't been to before. It was on the opposite side of Axel's office.
We continued walking till she pushed through a set of doors that took us to a long corridor.
Unlike other places in the mansion, this wing was bright and colorful. My nose rejoiced as it picked different fragrances with every door we passed.
It reminded me of the time when I still lived in the palace with my parents. My mother's quarters always had different scents and I made it a point to recognize each of them.
As we passed the doors, I started giving names to every scent that whiffed into my nostrils.
There was Jasmine, roses, fresh lilacs blooming, and sunflower scents.
When we finally came to a stop, a smile came to my face as the door had all scents blended together to form a mild alluring scent that I couldn't wait to embrace.
But a small pain came to my heart. The scents made me realize one thing, Axel had a wife. Did he?
"This is the King's concubines' quarters. You will serve all of them in the King's absence. As soon as he returns, you will be assigned a different duty," Hilda said before she pulled the door to the room open and stepped in before me. My heart calmed at the information she gave me. At least he had concubines and not a queen...
The room was larger than any room I have seen in my life. Not even my mother's room was as large as this. It was like a party hall with different sections, yet built as one.
Each section was divided by a curtain, demarcated with different colors, ranging from white to deep red.
The floor was lined with a lush carpet that went all the way through the different sections but came to a stop at the center.
At the center of the room, there was a large pool filled with different flowers and a woman was bathing in it.
Her hair was a long mass of dark luxury that shone like wax in the water. Her soft eyes focused on us and she stopped moving the water to stare at us.
As I looked back at her, I recognized her. She was on the table on the first day I got here. She and two others. Were they all his concubines?
I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy curl up in my heart. I closed my eyes and pushed the feeling away.
I had no right to be jealous. This Axel wasn't the same Axel I had become friends with. I was here strictly on a mission to save my parents.
"Savannah," Hilda said, bowing a little. Then she pointed at me. "This is Violet, the new slave assigned to you ladies," like her words were a clue, the swooshing sound of materials filled the hall as a curtain split open. "Ah, that is Lady Thalia," Hilda commented, pointing at the opened curtain.
We were a good distance from them, so I couldn't really tell what they looked like. But I did notice how she called this one with a title.
"Hilda, isn't this the girl from the dinning?" A smooth voice said from the far end of the room.
Then a slim woman with defined curves stepped out of a curtain and started heading toward us.
She had hair the same color as mine but hers looked more beautiful.
"Yes, Lady Thalia. She is." Hilda replied.
She stepped closer as if to examine me. Then she scoffed.
"Well, her first duty will be to check on Hera. I haven't seen her since yesterday," she said.
It sounded like a simple duty but somehow my heart skipped a beat and the strange feeling I was having as I walked to the mansion returned.
