The Mafia’s Good Wife -
Chapter 67
~ Violet -
---ONE WEEK LATER ---
"Other than the general tiredness and going to the bathroom a lot, is there anything else that you've been feeling lately?" Dr. Lee asked as she examined Violet's vitals in the bedroom. She was doing the usual weekly check-up as Violet rested on the bed. "Hmm, not really," Violet replied. "I think I'm doing alright... I'm just kinda nervous and anxious because I know the baby is coming very soon and I don't know if we're ready for that here..."
Violet glanced around the room and let out a sigh. To be honest, the room was a beautiful, big master suite overlooking the ocean. The Long Island safe house was a wonderful place to be in, but it just wasn't home. It didn't have all their memories and it didn't have baby Zach's nursery.
"Are you having concerns about the baby's delivery day? Because I can assure you, we will be fine no matter where we-"
"It's not that, Dr. Lee," Violet shook her head, cutting her off. "I just... really wanna go home...
Dr. Lee let out a sigh and started tidying her things.
"I don't think you need to worry about that either," she said. "Damon has assured me that we will be back before the due date,"
"I know, that's what he keeps saying, but.."
"You don't think that's the case?"
"I wanna believe it, but... you can never tell with Damon," Violet paused for a beat before adding, "With him, life just happens sometimes,"
Dr. Lee let out a smile and squeezed Violet's hand gently.
"Well, my advice as your healthcare provider is not to stress too much. We never know what's gonna happen and stress isn't good for the baby. Just try to enjoy yourself as much as you can. Think of this as an extended period of honeymoon. I know how much you guys wanted to stay on that island. If you can forget that we're all also in this house, this place can be a great vacation spot,"
Dr. Lee patted her hand several times before getting all her things together and standing up. Violet let out a deep breath and nodded her head.
"You're right," she agreed. "I guess I'll try that,"
It had been over a week since Violet and Damon arrived at the safe house and things were as good as they could be. You know, being on the run and all.
Every morning, Damon would be out with the guys to run errands and try to hunt down Celina's people. They were getting closer and closer. With the new families that joined Damon's side, they were able to have eyes and ears everywhere. Benzino's men weren't good at hiding in plain sight either. They all have a big mouth, which makes them pretty easy to find.
After a week of hiding out here, Damon was able to stealthily take down a quarter of Benzino's army. His plan was to continue doing this. Celina and Benzino didn't know where they were so they couldn't strike. So with time, all of their armies will be eradicated by Damon and his men. And then the war will be over and they can safely go back home again.
And live happily ever after. Finally...
Violet took a deep breath and closed her eyes, sending this little prayer out to the universe. After everything that they'd been through from the very beginning with the Maranzano family, then Hugo, and now this, she was exhausted. She couldn't wait for it to be over. Especially now that they were so close to that big happy ending. Damon was on track to run as mayor, his first big election was coming in a few short months. And then of course, Violet was ready to give birth to their son. Baby Zach was 33 weeks old now. He would arrive in the world in just 7 weeks.
"Oh, before I go, is there anything else you'd like to ask?" Dr. Lee said as she stopped her tracks, standing a few feet away from the door. "Any problems or concerns related to your health that I should know about?"
Violet was about to shake her head no, but then she remembered something.
"Well, there is this thing..." she trailed.
"What thing?" Dr. Lee looked concerned and walked back, sitting down next to her on the bed.
"It's a little embarrassing... but I just wanna know if it's normal or not,"
"Violet, honey, I am your doctor," she said reassuringly. "There's nothing you need to be embarrassed about when it comes to your body,"
Violet swallowed hard. Her cheeks were turning pink, a sign of clear embarrassment.
"Okay..." she said, pausing to look for the right words to say. "So, um, sometimes... when Damon and I are having s*x, I can feel the baby moving with us and it kinda took me by surprise. I don't know if that's a good thing or not? Are we hurting him or something?" "What do you mean by moving?" the doctor asked.
"Like, he's being very active. The kicks got sharper. And it's especially strong during... ehem, o****m,"
Violet's face was fully red now. Although she and Damon could be doing the most atrocious things in bed, she was never one to talk about it afterward. Her s*x life was a private thing, something sacred. It felt kind of weird talking to Dr. Lee about it. Although, obviously, Dr. Lee was no stranger to this topic. She had been the doctor who treated her since the first day she stepped foot into Damon's estate.
"Violet, s*x and o****m can have an interesting effect on babies in the womb, as you may have noticed," the doctor explained kindly. "Some are very quiet after their parents have s*x - rocked to sleep by the rhythmic movement, perhaps - while others become frisky themselves. Both responses are completely normal and in no way indicate that your baby is aware of the goings-on. That just means that he's having fun going along for the ride," Violet looked up and saw the non-judgmental eyes of Dr. Lee.
"Oh," she muttered. "So, we're not hurting him, then?" "Absolutely not,"
"That's good to hear," Violet let out a sigh of relief. Even though she was so close to giving birth already, Violet and Damon's s*x life was still as active as ever. She thought he would slow down, especially now that they didn't have the playroom anymore and she was getting so big, but Damon never stopped. In fact, he only got hungrier and hungrier for her by the day.
"Try to relax and not worry about things so much. Everything will be just fine," Dr. Lee smiled and stood up again, keeping her calm demeanor.
"Thank you, Dr. Lee," Violet replied, biting back her smile.
Once the doctor exited the room, Violet glanced down at her stomach. She rested her hand on top of it and started rubbing her belly. As if to answer her, she felt a little movement from baby Zach. Violet's lips curved up a smile instinctively. She could tell that Zach would be a very smart kid. Very intuitive and aware of his surroundings. She just hoped that she would make a great mommy for him. One who could give him a safe and loving environment to be born into.
You hear that, Zach? You're doing okay and mommy's doing okay too. We're just gonna enjoy this ride, okay? And we'll be home soon...
Being 33 weeks pregnant and on the run, Violet spent most of her days cooped up in that bedroom. Sometimes Talia, Ivy, and Barbara would visit her, but that was about all the company she could get. Due to the fact that Celina could be anywhere watching her, Damon didn't allow her to visit the coffee shop or go to any public places outside of the safe house compound. Some days when Violet felt super bored, she'd go down to the beach, but that was about it.
Today was another one of those boring days for Violet. After her weekly check-up with Dr. Lee and a visit from her mom and friends, Violet sat in her bed in silence, just waiting for time to pass her by. The sun had gone down and dinner time went by. Violet and all the women were having dinner together, but Damon and the guys were out.
After dinner, she went back to her room and tried to go to sleep, but it wasn't happening. With the hormonal changes, nightly bathroom runs, leg cramps, heartburn and a basketball-sized belly, it was no wonder that sleep was elusive. Violet stirred and stirred in bed, forcing her eyes shut, but sleep wasn't coming to her.
Luckily for her though, after some time had passed, something else came into the room. Or rather, someone.
"Hey," Damon said softly as he closed the bedroom door quietly. He was hoping not to wake her up, but he realized she wasn't even asleep.
"Hey," Violet said as she turned around. Her eyes lit up when she saw Damon standing there.
"Sorry, I'm late, again," he said with a sigh, taking off his suit before joining her in bed. "We had this meeting with some town officials, and then we got stuck in traffic going through New York City,"
"That's alright," Violet replied as she cuddled into his arm. She immediately felt warm and nice, and her body relaxed. "How was the meeting?"
"The meeting itself went great. Our campaigns are up and running. We have a great marketing team behind us, targeting the young. They say that's my target market. The people that will resonate with my voice the most,"
"That's interesting,"
"Yeah, apparently the young people in this country want some things to change. And I might be the right person to bring that out,"
"I have no doubts that you can and you will," she smiled, running her hand gently through his chest.
"Thank you," he replied. His tired body also relaxed under her touch. "This all feels so crazy sometimes. Like, how can a guy like me ever end up in this position?"
Damon stifled a laugh and put a hand over his eyes. So many changes were happening around this family and sometimes they felt surreal. Looking back, Damon was just an orphan boy who was raised by a mafia family. Violet was just a simple girl who got mixed up with Damon. But somehow along the way, they turned everything upside down and they could actually become a family that people can look up to.
"Hey, you got here by being exactly who you are," Violet said as she rested her chin on his chest. "You're smart and amazing at everything you do. Jersey City would be lucky to have a mayor like you," Damon opened his eyes and stared back at her. A smile curved up his lips instinctively.
"And I'm so lucky to have a wife like you," he said as he tilted her chin towards him, planting a soft kiss on her lips. Violet's heart fluttered in her chest and she kept her smile through the kiss. "Anyway, how was the doctor's visit? Anything I should know about?"
It was a habit now that every night, Damon would share the progress of his work, and Violet would update him on the pregnancy. It was a partnership like no other. The perfect partners in crime.
"Well, you know that thing where Zach is kicking super hard when we're... um... doing it? Well, I asked Dr. Lee and she said it's totally normal. Apparently, he's just enjoying the ride,"
"That's good. I hope he is," Damon said with a laugh. A smirk was playing on his face. "Because there's gonna be a lot more of that coming!"
Before Violet could say anything else, Damon flipped their bodies over so she was lying on her back and he was hovering above her.
"Damon!" she squealed, but he just shut her up with another kiss.
-----ONE WEEK LATER -----
When Violet opened her eyes next, she saw sunlight streaming through the window and Damon's face was in front of hers. His eyes were also slowly opening, and he smiled when he caught her looking. Violet's lips curved into a smile as she glanced down. She saw how their naked bodies were tangled together, and she remembered what happened last night.
Oh, yes. Every night now, Damon and Violet made love. If it wasn't for all the love-making sessions, she wouldn't get tired enough to fall asleep. Love-making wasn't just an indulgence anymore. It was a necessity.
"Good morning, sweet girl," he said with a lazy smile.
"Good morning, Damon," she replied, her hand reaching out to touch his face.
Damon put his hand over her hand and kissed her fingers. Violet felt the butterflies and baby Zach's kicking as he did this. It will always be a wonder to her, how he had done this so many times already and yet she still feels the same excitement every time he did it. "Ready for another day?" he asked, propping his head on his elbow. "With you?" she smiled. "Always,"
