Chapter 558:

Caden started the car and said, “It’s getting late.

Let’s head back to Joy Mansion for dinner.

That way, we can get home early.”

Alicia fell silent for a moment.

Given the current mood, there was little point in prolonging their cold war.

As they drove, Alicia grew increasingly uncomfortable and finally broke the silence.

“Caden, do I have to go? If I need to see Ciara, I’ll arrange it for another time, but does it really have to be over dinner?”

Caden’s brow furrowed.

“What are you worried about?”

She pressed her lips together and said, “Your uncle doesn’t like me.”

Caden had been aware of this for some time.

“There was a misunderstanding between you two.

I’ve been too busy to address it until now.

Today, I informed the family that I was bringing my girlfriend home for dinner.

My uncle won’t dare disrespect me.”

Alicia couldn’t help but smile bitterly.

With Caden’s heads-up, his uncle would certainly think twice about making things difficult for her.

But what would happen after that?

Caden couldn’t always be her shield, and given their last clash, his uncle already harbored resentment toward her.

Who knew what might unfold next?

Alicia dreaded facing that man.

After all, he was Caden’s uncle, a figure who had once shown kindness to him.

She couldn’t afford to be careless, yet she was unwilling to swallow her pride.

All she could do was keep her distance.

Taking a deep breath, Alicia decided it was time to speak her truth.

“Caden, about that day at Joy Mansion, your uncle—”

Suddenly, a phone call sliced through the air.

The abrupt Bluetooth ringtone felt jarring, cutting Alicia off mid-sentence.

When she glanced at the caller ID and saw it was his uncle, a knot twisted in her stomach, and she fell silent.

Caden answered and put the call on speaker.

“What’s up?”

Benedict sounded displeased as he asked, “Why aren’t you back yet? Don’t tell me you’re planning to stand me up again.”

“I just picked up Alicia.

We are on our way.”

Benedict snorted dismissively.

“She always causes delays.”

Caden’s displeasure bubbled to the surface.

“It was my fault, not hers.”

Benedict hung up without saying another word.

Alicia felt a tightness in her chest, her resistance hardening like steel.

“Caden, I don’t want to go back.

I can’t stand your uncle!”

Noticing her emotion, Caden watched her, his brow creasing in concern.

Alicia rarely spoke so bluntly, but her open criticism of Benedict showed that he had gotten under her skin.

“Did he give you a hard time?” Caden asked.

Alicia looked straight ahead, her voice subdued.

“He talks just like you — harsh.”

Caden didn’t deny it.

A sharp tongue was a family trait.
