Chapter 559:

“My uncle can be blunt, but he means well.

As my grandparents’ eldest son, he can’t afford to be mild if he’s going to uphold the Ward family.”

He cared too much — that was why Caden’s mother had been too trusting, deceived by Jerald’s facade.

As his sister, she had been raised with love and protection but ended up with such heartbreak.

No one felt that more keenly than he did.

For a moment, Caden’s expression darkened.

Alicia understood he was torn, but she wasn’t willing to give in.

“Give me some time to calm down,” she said evenly.

“You go back today.

Just pull over up ahead, and I’ll get out.”

Caden kept driving.

Only when they reached a red light did he stop.

“This isn’t going to resolve itself with time.

Better to face it now.

Let me handle it,” he said.

Alicia clenched her fists.

“Caden, don’t you get it? I don’t want to go.”

Her impatience seemed to frustrate him.

“My uncle is my family.

Do you understand that?”

Alicia felt a pang of frustration.

“What’s there to understand? He’s your family.

What does that have to do with me?” she burst out.

Caden’s gaze narrowed dangerously.

“What does it have to do with you, you say?”

Alicia replied, unflinching.

“We’re just dating, not married.

Why should I go with you and try to please someone I don’t like?”

Caden’s grip tightened on the steering wheel.

However, Alicia looked away.

Her voice was calm, but her stance was firm.

“I’m not going back today.” This wasn’t her obligation.

He hadn’t even mentioned marriage.

And now, Caden could sense that she had no intention of marrying him.

That thought hadn’t bothered him initially, but a slow-burning anger began to rise inside him.

No matter how upset she was, he took her back to Joy Mansion.

He stepped out of the car, his tone cold.

“Are you walking yourself, or should I carry you?”

Alicia held his gaze, her expression flickering with frustration, helplessness, and sadness before she glanced away.

He was right; people in power were stubborn.

When he was pleased, he humored her.

But when he wasn’t, it was his way or nothing.

Otherwise, there would be a breakup.

The thought made her heart ache.

She managed a faint sneer, lowering her eyes.

“I’ll walk.”

Caden let go, yet he held onto her hand as they walked inside, his demeanor outwardly affectionate.

But for all the closeness, a rift between them remained.

Dinner was already set, waiting for them.

When she saw Ciara, Alicia greeted her with a soft smile.

“Hello, Ciara.”

Ciara smiled, patting the chair beside her.

“Come sit here, Alicia.”

Alicia nodded and walked over.

Caden pulled out the chair for her.
