Chapter 126

Alissa Soleil's POV

"It doesn't matter. I'll just keep denying it" I said standing up.

"Where are you going?" Cal asked.

"I'm going back to work. You should too" I said.

Cal sighed and stood up as well following me to the door.

We got out of his office and made our way down to the emergency room floor to accommodate more patients.

Calum and I had to deal with separate patients but he checked on me from time to time.

Hours passed by and we got really busy with the patients coming in and out of the hospital.

I performed 2 surgeries during those few hours.

When nighttime came, I did another round of my patients.

Well, except for Luke.

I had to wait for Calum to finish his rounds so we can both check on Luke together.

It's not that I can't check on him myself.

Calum made me promise that I would go to Luke without him.

He was worried about me and my overall safety and I understood where he eas coming from so I agreed to nog meet Luke unless he was with me.

I just finished making my rounds when I decided to get a drink from the vending machine.

I got a soda and sat down.

I checked on my phone and saw Ma's reply.

I was so busy that I forgot to check.

From: Ma

I already ate, my dear. Your lunch is pretty late huh. Don't worry too much about me. I'm drinking tons of water and I don't skip any meals here. Your Ma is alright. I smiled and dialed her number to call her.

After a few rings, she picked up.

I stood up.

"Hi, Ma. How are you doing?" I asked.

"I'm doing fine, dear. How's work?"

"Fine. I just finished doing my rounds" I told her.

"Really? That's great. Have you had dinner yet?"

"Not yet. I'm waiting on Calum" I said.

"Okay, good. Atleast I'm assured that you won't be eating alone. Anyways, how are you feeling?"

"Right now, I'm feeling fine, Ma. I mean, it hasn't even been 12 hours yet. I still have like 25 hours to go on my shift" I explained.

"Oh dear. And you won't be able to rest. My poor daughter"

I slightly chuckled.

"I really am fine, Ma. I'm already used to this, remember? I've been a doctor for a while after all" I said.

"I know but still. I'm sure you're tired. The physical, emotional and mental tolll your work takes from you is unimaginable"

I smiled a little.

"But I like what I'm doing, Ma. I like seeing, talking and treating my patients. I love my job. It's something I'm passionate about" I told her.

"I know, dear. I know. And I'm so proud of the person that you are"

I smiled.

"Have you had dinner yet?" I asked.

"We just had dinner before you called"

I nodded in understanding.

"Okay, Ma. I think I should check up on Calum now. I'll call you again tomorrow morning, okay?" I said.

"Okay, dear"

"I love you, Ma. I'll see you soon" I said goodbye.

"I love you more, my dear daughter"

I smiled and I let her end the call.

When I turned around I almost gasped when I saw the person by the vending machine.

He put a dollar in machine and then took his soda.

Then, he glanced at me.

We stared at each other for a moment and then he turned away as if he didn't see me in the first place.

My brows furrowed a little.

Axel...

Could he have heard my conversation with Ma?

I'm pretty certain he would have.

I unconsciously followed Axel.

I didn't know why. I just did.

He went to Luke's room and I stood by the door.

I contemplated on going in and just when I was about to...

"Did you see Alissa?" I heard Luke ask.

"What are you talking about? I went to get a soda" Axel replied.

"Seriously, uncle Axel? We didn't come here to hang out. We're here to take Alissa back" Luke said.

"Luke" Axel said with a slight warning tone.

"What?" Luke replied.

"You can't keep harassing that female doctor just because you think she's Alissa. You don't have proof, Luke" Axel said.

I bit my lower lip.

"I don't just think she's Alissa. I know she's Alissa. Uncle Axel, didn't you feel it too when you saw her?" Luke said.

"No. I don't know. But what I do know is this is all so wrong. You could be wrong and you would've ended up just harassing that doctor when she just wanted to do her job" Axel said.

I gulped.

"You manipulated your way here. You consumed wolf's bane all on your own to stop yourself from healing. Then, you pissed off some random dudes so they'd beat you up. Then, you went to this hospital and insisted to be treated by onr specific doctor" Axel stated. My brows furrowed.

So that's what happened.

My jaw clenched.

"Luke, if your mother found out about this, she won't be happy" he said.

"Uncle Axel" Luke said.

"Didn't you come here in hopes of getting Alissa back as well?" Luke asked.

There was a moment of silence.

"No. I didn't" Axel said..

"I've been searching for Alissa, yes. But it wasn't because I wanted to force her to come back. I was looking for her because I wanted to know that she was safe. If she was happy. If she was finally living her life. You're the only one who's been trying so hard to find her to bring her back but have you ever thought if she wanted to be back in the Palace in the first place, Luke?" he said.

"Have you ever thought how she'd feel living in a place where she spent her time nourishing then mourning for her unborn baby? Have you thought how she would feel when she goes through the woods and remembers how she was attacked in a helpless state and the next thing she knows, she's in the hospital and everyone is telling her that the baby she tried so hard to protect is gone?" Axel continued.

"Luke, I also watched Alissa drive herself crazy as she mourned for Reeva's death. You were his husband, you of all people should understand how dark those times were so why would you...why would you want to her to remember those memories by forcing her to go back? You said you love Alissa. If you really do, why can't you choose her happiness over your own?" he said.

"I'm not Alissa's father. I'm merely his step-father and I never got to build a connection with her as she was growing up. I regret that every day of my life. I should have tried harder to connect to her and give her the dad she deserved. When she left again, I was so worried about her but I was relieved at the same time because I thought maybe leaving was the best option for her to find her happiness. It hurts me every time I hear my wife cry for Alissa but I'd rather be in constant pain as long as I know that Alissa is happy somewhere else. Even if it meant, it wasn't with us" he said.

A tear escaped my eye.

I stepped back and I ran away from there.

Instead of looking for Calum, I went straight to the rooftop.

I got there and as soon as I got out, I gasped for air.

I shut the door behind me and I fell to my knees.

I felt like my heart was being squeezed inside my chest after hearing all of that from Axel.

I've always been so harsh on him from the very start.

I never knew he felt the way he did now.

I cried out of guilt.

Then, I had to pick myself up again and I headed down after another mental breakdown.

As I was going down the stairs, Luke suddenly appeared.

I stepped back and then my brows furrowed at him.

"Shouldn't you be in bed?" I said.

He didn't answer.

He just looked at me as if he was trying to read through me.

"Sir, you need to go back to your room-" I said and before I could even say anything more, Luke took out something from behind him.

My eyes slightly widened when I saw my notepad.

I instinctively reached for my pocket and realized it really wasn't there.

"You lost something?" he asked in a serious tone.

My jaw clenched.

"Give it back" I said and stepped down the stairs.

Luke stepping back then he opened the notepad.

"What the hell?! That's mine" I said trying to get it from him.

Then, he took out the ultrasound from in between the pages.

I stopped.

"Are you still going to keep denying that you're Alissa?" he said with furrowed brows.

I raised a brow at him.

"What? Is that ultrasound going to prove anything? There's literally tons of ultrasound out there from pregnant women" I said still trying to take it back.

The ultrasound was the only thing I had of Reeva. I can't lose it.

"Yeah but not as identical as the one I have of my daughter" he said and he suddenly took something out again and I was speechless when I saw the exact copy of the ultrasound.

"We both had a copy, remember? Now, tell me now. Tell me you're not Alissa and deny to me that this isn't Reeva's ultrasound" he said with gritted teeth as his eyes watered with tears.

I couldn't deny this one now.

He's finally confirmed it and it was because of my own carelessness.

I grabbed my notepad and the ultrasound from his hand as I looked at him angrily.

"Fine" I said.

"You got me. I am Alissa" I admitted.

Luke's eyes softened as he looked at me.

"Alissa..." he said as he stepped forward and I stepped.

"Don't you dare take another fcking step, Luke" I hissed.

"You have no business being here. You think I don't know the stunt you pulled to be he here? You consumed wolf's bane and intentionally got beaten up so what? So you could come here and pester me?" I said angrily.

"Are you fcking mental? Do you despise me so much that you want to keep ruining all the good things I have in my life?!" I said.

"Alissa, no. I just wanted to see you. I wanted to know how you were doing. If you were still alive. I wanted you back. I didn't want to harm you" he said as tear streamed down his face and when he tried to step forward again, I stepped back. "I said don't come near me!" I screamed and my own eyes watered with anger and frustration.

"Luke, don't you get it?" I said.

"I'm not the same Alissa I was before I left. I'm not your mate anymore. Our bond broke when a long time ago. Can't you just find someone else?" I said.

Luke shook his head.

"You'll always be my mate. The bond I have with you was severed but it's still there. That's why I was able to find you. That's why I was able to recognize you" he said.

I chuckled in disbelief.

"We met again coincidentally. That didn't mean anything. You shouldn't have recognized me. You shouldn't have tried to meet me again" I said.

"Luke, I'm not coming back. I like where I am right now. And I have a responsibility with these people. I'm not leaving" I said sternly. "What about us?" he said.

"What about our people. You. You're supposed to be the Queen of Lunar and Halo" he said.

"These humans have hundreds and thousands of human doctors. Lunar and Halo only have 1 Queen. It's supposed to be you" he said. My jaw clenched.

"Why don't you make your ex your Queen? You already have a son together after all" I said.

"She's nothing to me. She'll never be my wife or our people's Queen. She-" he tried to continue but I cut him off.

Luke's jaw clenched.

"And I won't be either" I said.

Luke stopped talking.

"Let's stop here" I said.

"I can't come back with you because like I said, I'm not the same Alissa I was when I left. I..." I said and paused.

"I'm different from all of you now" I said.

Luke's brows furrowed.

"What do you mean by that?" he asked..

I bit my lower lip.

"You and aunt Livi are still acquainted with the moon goddess, aren't you?" I asked.

"Ask her then. Ask her what I am. Ask her what happened to me 13 years ago. Ask her why Alissa is gone and why Soleil exists" I said as a tear escaped my eye bit I quickly wiped it away.

"Spend your night here quietly after being monitored. Then, process your papers and leave. Because I'm staying" I said and I passed him.

As soon as I did, tears streamed down my face and I held my chest.

I feel like it was being ripped out of my chest.

It hurts so much.
