Twice Rejected -
Chapter 73
Julianna’s POV
What a morning!
I flipped the pen I held with a smirk on my lips. Things were finally becoming clearer. If things went the way I’ve planned, we would find Koko in no time.
I chuckled as I remembered my conversation with Scarlett. That lady sure knew how to put up on act. If I wasn’t a professional, I would have believed her right away? She hadn’t spent anytime with Henry? Let’s see how true that statement is.
“What are you doing standing there all alone and smiling to yourself?”
I turned to see Laci walking towards me with a tray of food in her hands. I put the pen in my shirt pocket and smiled at her.
“Oh, good morning, Laci.” I greeted.
“Morning. It seems you had a goodnight sleep, seeing that you’re smiling so much.” She teased.
“I did, but that is not why I am smiling.” I said. “Why are you holding that by yourself? Hand it over. I’ll help you.” I said and held the tray.
“It is not really necessary.” She tried to resist
“I insist.” I collected it from her and she smiled.
“You shouldn’t have. Niyol just finished using it to eat, so I decided to keep them.” She smiled.
“You don’t need to stress yourself too much. There are maids who are always ready to carry out your orders.” I said to her.
Just then a maid walked by.
“Can you please return these to the kitchen for me?” I asked her with a smile.
“Sure.” She bowed to Laci then to me before collecting the tray from my hands.
“Now, tell me why you were smiling so much few minutes ago.” Laci requested.
“Well…”
“Do you by chance have a man in your life? I could remember when I met my husband. I used to be like this.” She smiled, looking up like she was replaying memories of the past in her head.
I shook my head, even though my thoughts went to Chester as she said that. “No, Laci. It isn’t what you’re thinking.”
“It is fine if you don’t feel like talking about it yet. I’m always available whenever you’re ready and don’t forget to come to me for advice, okay? You would be needing that alot.” She winked.
I facepalmed. She wouldn’t believe anything I say at this rate.
“I’m sure you haven’t seen the Alpha this morning. Why not come in?” She led the way to Alpha Niyol’s room. I sighed and followed her in quietly.
Chester was already in the room at the time. Immediately I entered, we locked gazes, but I looked away. I walked over to the Alpha’s bed and bowed.
“Your grace?”
“How are you doing?” He asked.
“I’m fine. You look better this morning.” I said.
“Everyone keep saying that.” Alpha Niyol sighed.
“He must have slept well.” Laci said.
“I guess so.” I replied.
“Have you eaten this morning? It would be nice if you and Laci had breakfast together right? You would get the opportunity to talk about some female stuff.” He said
“That won’t be necessary, Alpha Niyol. She might be busy and on top of that, I have eaten this morning. Maybe next time.” I bowed.
Alpha Niyol turned to hear Laci’s response. I prayed silently that she wouldn’t insist.
“It is okay by me but since she has eaten, it would be good if we did it next time.” She smiled at me and I sighed in relief.
Honestly, I was happy she didn’t insist. I didn’t want to get into an uncomfortable discussion about love and the rest. Also, because of her perception that I had a lover.
I looked towards Chester’s direction and he was staring at me like he didn’t believe what I said. I stylishly put my hands on my lips, giving him a signal to keep shut. He simply smirked and looked away. If he blew my cover, I won’t spare him. I was sure he knew the drill.
“Okay then. Ms Julianna?” The Alpha called.
“Yes, Alpha Niyol.” I bowed.
“Please, have a seat.”
I was about to talk, but he stopped me. “I know what you’re probably thinking but you have my permission. After all, you’re the special investigator working on Koko’s case.” He smiled at me.
I nodded and sat down. “Thank you.”
“It’s a pleasure. So, what are your findings? Haven’t you found her abductors or where they’re located?” He asked.
“I am still on that and I am most certain that I will find a lead soon.” I answered.
“It seems to be taking longer than expected, but I am sure you’re working. I trust you.” He said.
“Alpha, you do know trust is the most dangerous weapon an enemy could use to bring you down right?” I asked.
He was quiet for a while.
“Why the sudden question, Ms Julianna?” He asked me.
“The people you think you trust the most can turn out to backstab you in the end.” I smiled at him.
“Are you saying that you’re going to backstab me?” He asked.
“I wouldn’t dare. I am just giving you a hint, so that you would be careful and not trust people that easily to avoid getting hurt. Betrayal hurts like hell.” I said.
“Why are you talking like you’ve experienced it before?” Chester asked.
“It’s just a hint, Cousin.” I glared at him.
“Whatever.” He looked away.
“I’ll take your advice. Do well to prove yourself trustworthy then
” Alpha Niyol said and I smiled.
My phone rang, drawing their attention. I took it and smiled when I saw who was calling.
“Why are you smiling? Is it probably goodnews?” Alpha Niyol asked.
I looked at him and back at Laci who had a knowing smile on her face.
“It isn’t what you think, Laci.” I said.
“Let us allow her answer her call, okay?” Laci said.
I answered the phone and placed it to my ear. “Um… Let’s talk later. I am in the middle of an important meeting now.” I said and hung up.
I looked up to see six pairs of eager eyes looking at me. “It isn’t what you guys think. It’s work, okay? Work…” I stressed the last word.
“We understand.” Alpha Niyol spoke up and I nodded.
“I’ll be off now. There are a lot I am to take care of today.” I said and stood up.
“You’re working hard on this case. Thanks,”
“It is my pleasure, your grace.” I bowed and walked out of the room.
“Are you sure you’ve eaten?” Chester asked. I should have known he would follow me out to fill up his curiosity.
“You should be taking care of the Alpha.” I said in a bid to dodge the question.
“Laci is there. The Alpha is fine.” He replied. “Why did you lie about eating?” He asked.
“You can’t call that a lie, Chester. I have eaten.” Immediately those words left my mouth, my stomach growled and I pressed my lips into a thin line. I looked up to meet Chester’s eyes and he had that smug look on his face.
“I have a good reason for avoiding breakfast with her.”
“I’m all ears.” He tucked his hands into his pocket and rested on the wall.
“I would get uncomfortable because of the girl talk stuff.” I pressed my fingers together.
“But you flirt with guys,” He said.
“You!” I snapped.
“It’s the truth. Stop acting like a baby and get yourself something to eat before you pass out.” With that said, he walked back into the Alpha’s room.
So annoying!
I huffed then suddenly remembered that I was supposed to make a phone call. I hurried to my room and shut the door. I took out my phone and sat down the bed before dialing the number. The phone ran thrice before it was answered.
“What did you find?” I asked.
“They met this morning before Scarlett came to the palace. They discussed something about you posing as an obstacle in their way and the need for you to be eliminated.”
“They sure have damn guts!” I cursed under my breath. “Have they made any move or trying to go to where she’s been kept?” I asked.
“Not yet, but they are planning to.”
“Good. Make sure you keep an eagle eye on them. Do not let them out of your sight even if it’s for a minute. Track them till the very end, you can’t lose them.” I instructed.
“I’ll do exactly that.”
“Hope you’re gathering evidence like I asked you to?”
“Yes!”
“Good. Since they are after my life, I won’t be able to see you so as to collect, so make sure you keep them a safe place. That is the only thing we need to bring them to justice.” I snapped my fingers.
“Noted!”
“Bye for now. Just call me when you have more informations.” I said and hung up.
I threw the phone on the bed and growled angrily. Those fools really are something! Now they were coming for me? I chuckled at their desperation and stupidity. I suddenly recalled the last line of Scarlett’s words
“I turned her down immediately because Koko is the one who deserves him.”
Things were beginning to become clear. All these happened because of the Alpha. Scarlett wanted the Alpha, but Koko was an obstacle so she needed to be taken care of. When Koko is gone, Scarlett would eventually become the Luna, if Alpha Niyol gives her a chance of course.
Now, I was aware of what Scarlett would gain form this. It was clear now! But what about Henry? What does he tend to gain from all these? I’ll have to find out, that’s for sure.
