Twice Rejected -
Chapter 72
Scarlett’s POV
“Scarlett, are you alright?” Laci ran to me.
“I’m fine, it’s no big deal.” I said.
“Sorry about that.” Niyol said.
I forced a smile and nodded my head.
“Come on, I’ll go help you clean up.” Laci offered.
“No problem, I’ll do it myself.” I stood up and started walking out. At least it would give me some minutes away from her. I met Chester at the door and he looked at me.
“What happened to your dress?” He asked.
“It’s nothing.” I answered and left.
I went to the bathroom and wiped myself clean. I stared at the mirror to pull my thoughts together. If I make any mistake here then our cover would be blown. I had to tolerate this girl as much as possible today.
“I can do this!” I exhaled and stepped out of the bathroom.
I wasn’t surprised when I saw her outside, waiting for me. I pretended not to see her and made my way to the room.
“It looks like you’re avoiding me.” She said.
I halted and turned. I chuckled and went to stand in front of her. “Why would I avoid you?” I asked her.
“You know why.” she answered.
“What do you want?” I asked her.
“I want us to talk.” She said.
I already knew where this was leading to. “I’m busy. As you can see I was attending to the Alpha before coming here, so if you would excuse me.”
“I just want us to have a nice and friendly talk. Is that too much to ask?” She looked me in the eyes when she said that.
“I’ve told you. I can’t talk now.” I was trying to control my temper.
“Why don’t you want to talk now? Is there perhaps something you’re escaping from?” She asked me.
“I’ve got nothing to hide.” I answered her.
“I didn’t ask if you have anything to hide. Why are you suddenly nervous?” She gave me an intimidating look, but I maintained eye contact.
“Do I look nervous to you?” I snapped.
“Calm down, Missy. This hasn’t gotten to a part where we raise our voices. You’re overreacting.”
“Over what?”
I can’t believe this lady. What does she think of herself anyway? That she can get the truth out of anybody she wished?
I controlled the urge to slap her across the face and exhaled. She wanted us to talk? Let us talk then. I was prepared for whatever rubbish she was going to sprout out. After all, she was my target now.
“Are you ready for us to talk now?” She asked.
“Be snappy with whatever you wanna talk about. I haven’t got all the time in the world. I am not jobless.” I said with a hint of meaning in my words.
She chuckled in an annoying way and I rolled my eyes. “Let us go then.” She said.
“Where? I thought we were going to discuss it here.” I complained.
“It’s confidential and you know what that means, right?” She asked.
“Of course, I do. I am not dumb.” I answered.
“Follow me then.” She started walking away and I followed.
If I knew this was gonna happen today, I wouldn’t have visited the palace now. Damnit! We entered a room that seemed to be hers and she opened the windows.
“Have a seat.” She pointed to a couch.
“I’m okay standing. I don’t plan spending much time here.” I folded my arms.
“Can you quit being all stubborn and impudent for once and do what I say?” She said calmly.
I sighed and reluctantly sat down. She took a book and pen then sat on a stool facing me. I felt like I was in a detention center interrogation room, judging from her eyes scrutinizing my body.
“What is the meaning of this?” I asked, getting annoyed.
“Calm down. I have the Alpha’s permission to do this, so you must cooperate with me,” She said in an authoritative tone which pissed me off more.
“Is this what you call a nice and friendly discussion?” I scoffed.
“Are we holding knives?” She asked rhetorically. I rolled my eyes and folded my arms. “The first day I asked you a few questions, you didn’t really give me defined answers. I guess you weren’t in a good mood at the time. Now that you’re here, I need your cooperation and we’ll be done in no time.” She smiled at me but I didn’t return it.
“Let’s just get this over with” I said in a nonchalant tone.
“Good. How well do you know Koko?” She asked.
“We aren’t close.” I answered.
“How well do you know her? You spent some time with her while she she was here in the palace.” She said.
I remembered the time I spent with her. The only thing I did was to maltreat and threaten her to stay away from Niyole. I was not dumb to tell Julianna that. It would screw up everything so far.
“I did spend time with her, but we weren’t friends.”
“Oh, really? Alright. What about the dethroned queen mother? How well is your relationship with her?” She asked.
“My relationship with the queen mother was a friendly one, but I distanced myself from her the moment she started telling me to seduce the Alpha.” I answered.
“Is that so?” She looked at me.
“Yes!” I looked into her eyes as I answered that.
“Before the Alpha stripped the Queen mother of her title, you were there with her. You should know details of whether she was responsible for Koko’s kidnap?” She asked.
I smiled at her question. This was an opportunity to paint the dethroned queen black. If I lead her to another direction, I would achieve my aim before she tracks me down. “Of course the queen mother is responsible. When Koko was still here with us, she would threaten to kill the poor girl if she didn’t leave the palace. I am sure she was responsible because of the way, she rejoiced that Koko was nowhere to be found and that I should use the opportunity to go close to the Alpha. I turned her down immediately because Koko is the one who deserves him.” I explained, forcing that line out of my mouth.
“So you’re saying that you have no interest in the Alpha?”
“Yes. I’m just helping him to recover for courtesy sake.” I said and she chuckled.
“Do you by chance know who Henry is?” She asked.
Henry normally visits the Alpha so it would be suspicious if I act not to know him.
“Yes, I know him.” I answered.
“Nice. What relationship do you both have?” She asked.
“Relationship? What do you mean by that? I and Henry are not close at all. We don’t even talk to each other.” I answered.
“Have you seen him write something down before?” She asked.
“Only once.” I answered.
She opened the book she was holding and brought out a piece of paper. No doubt it was the letter Henry gave to Koko.
That cursed girl!
She should have thrown the letter like she was asked to! Julianna stretched the letter out to me and I took it.
“Does that handwriting look like Henry’s?” She asked me.
“I only saw his handwriting once so I can’t tell.” I answered.
She knew it was Henry’s writing, yet she was asking me. I knew what she was trying to do and I was not going to give her the chance.
“Look closely. It should look familiar. You can’t forget something like that in such a hurry.” She insisted.
“I’ve told you already. I can’t tell if it is his. Besides, I and Henry barely see each other. What would I keep his handwriting in my memory for?” I asked.
“You two aren’t close?” She chuckled and took the letter from me.
What was she up to this time?
“I think he is responsible for Koko’s kidnap.”
“How can you say that? Henry can’t do such a thing!” I snapped before I realized it.
“You sound like you know him too well.” She smirked.
“Um… No. I am just saying that because he is very close to Koko. I heard he took care of her while the Alpha was away and has been helping her.” I dragged my words.
“Really?”
“Yes, that’s why I find it unbelievable. They’re too close for him to do that to her.”
“You claim not to know him, but you defend him this way? Are you sure there is nothing suspicious going on?” She asked.
I stood up. I can’t put up with this girl any longer. “Believe it or not, I have nothing to do with Henry. Besides, he isn’t part of my class. The earlier you get that in to your head, the better for you. I believe we’re done here.q” I said with a frown.
“Yeah. I got what I need to tackle this case once and for all.” She smirked.
I had no idea what she meant, but I had a feeling there was a hidden meaning to what she just said.
“Bye!” I opened the door and she followed me out. I ignored her and turned to leave the palace.
“Aren’t you going to take care of the Alpha anymore?” She asked me.
“You’ve succeeded in ruining my mood today. Have a nice life.” I snapped and left.
I entered my car and took out my phone. I dialed Henry’s line and he answered after the second ring.
“Hello..” He spoke up.
“Henry, listen to me. Now I understand what you were talking about. We need to kill Koko and Julianna now. Julianna might be onto something and we can’t let her succeed.”
“We can’t talk on the phone. I got what you said” He hung up.
I hit the wheels angrily. Julianna must die!
