Twisting Her Fate
Chapter 129

Connor holds the photo close to his heart.

"Please have held on to your love for me Lani. I don't want to get to the end of this journey and leave empty-handed. I know I've said I'd be satisfied seeing you happy, but I'm not so generous. I want to be happy too and the only way for me to be happy is to be with you" Connor turns his head to the side and imagines that Lani is lying there right beside him looking at him with her stormy blue eyes.

All of that beauty should not be allowed in one being.

"I hope that if I see you with another man that I can walk away. Knowing how loved you are, I'm hoping he treasures you as much as you deserve to be treasured. In reality, I will probably just walk up and rip his head from his shoulders, believing that he is unworthy of you. I myself are the same. I know that I'm not worthy of you, but I know I can love you more than anyone else in this world"

3 weeks after separation

Damon looks from Connor to the girl whose face is completely shielded, yet he can feel her gaze on him. It is not a hostile gaze, but it makes him feel something different. Connor's whole demeanour is cold.

"So you looked for your mate and then when you couldn't find her you mated with her twin?"

Connor tries to hide his emotions, but it is impossible to say the words without a certain level of despise. It is a despicable act.

Damon looks back at Connor even though he is weaker than the man. He will also not allow his decisions to be questioned in such a way. Everything was done for a reason how he wishes that everything was different, but the fact of the matter is that his fated was never what he thought. She was just like everyone else, posing with a pretty innocent face.

"It isn't as simple as that"

Connor doesn't even look at Madison and Madison has nothing to say about the situation. Anyway, it is a fight between the two men, she can have very little input in such a situation.

Two men, two alphas, one trying to justify his situation and one is highly protective of Evie. He doesn't want her to hear what Damon says next, but it is necessary. Evie already knows it's going to hurt. There is only so much she can brace herself, even if she knows the words. It doesn't lessen the blow to hear them out loud.

"The moon goddess f*cked me over when she blessed.."

The way he says blessed is more like he's spitting venom. Damon has maintained composure up until this point, but saying that Evie is a blessing is so far from the truth that he struggles to say it.

Connor's anger intensifies and Evie's shoulders drop further. She is still seated on the couch but gives the impression of a ball curled up trying to give herself some sort of security. There is nothing that Connor can do to cushion this blow for her. "..me with Evie"

The way Damon says the words with his voice dripping with disgust, just grates on Connor's last nerve, his fingers tapping on the couch get faster and faster as he tries to keep his claws embedded in the tips of his fingers.

From what he has seen of Evie, even after everything she's been through, she is being nothing but sweet. For Damon to say those words like that, like she doesn't deserve love, like she is some curse to have as a mate. It is disgusting.

If Connor didn't already have Leilani, he would feel privileged to be mated to such a woman, damaged or not.

Damon doesn't even know Evie now and still says that with such despise. All Connor wants to do is rip the man to shreds, but it is not his place. He may be fated to her, but this is Evie's fight, not his. He is her support. "That is a strange thing to say about your fated"

"Didn't you reject your fated?"

Connor was wondering when it would come back to him because the fact of the matter is, he is onto his second fated and he's still not happy. Still wanting to choose for himself. Still wanting Leilani, but they don't know that. Of course, they think the woman beside him is Leilani. If they knew the truth, there is no way the couple would be saying such things.

"The woman I was fated to was a completely different situation.."

Connor wants to tell Damon that it's none of his business but without them knowing that Evie is right there and she has every right to know why the situation is the way it is. He can't say that as he needs the information. He can only volunteer enough information so that he can gain what he needs. Everything has to be give and take.

"She kissed another Alpha in front of me. She had no qualms completely ignoring me and continuing to sleep with the other Alpha, her chosen mate, while we were bonded and I could feel everything. She had no interest in me until she saw the pack standings, then she came to my pack like the ladder climber she was, when I told her that I was not interested. She then proceeded to hurt my pack members. Maggie was far from a good person"

"Evie was exactly the same. I just didn't know it at the time. I was spellbound by the innocent facade but she was cheating on me the whole time. At least your mate didn't make you fall in love with her. At least she was up front from the first moment of what she was like. I was completely fooled by Evie"

Connor resists the urge to extend his canines and snarl at the dimwitted person in front of him. Comparing Evie and Maggie is not even possible. They're not in the same league whatsoever.

"And what could a seventeen-year-old who hasn't even hit her eighteenth birthday, who hasn't even had a chance to shift and feel her wolf, do to elicit such feelings when she was not present to defend herself?"

Obviously, there's a point where Damon cared because otherwise he wouldn't have joined the search at all. He would have thought good riddance. So what changed in that time?

"I thought she was pure. I thought she was innocent. I thought I was her only man as she was my only woman, but it was all a lie"

Evie opens her mouth wordlessly. There is nothing that she can say. There is nothing she can do to defend herself or she can do is half out and exacerbated breath.

He was her only man back then, but now that is far from the truth.

She doesn't need to defend herself from him anyway. If he wants to believe that, then he never really trusted her.

"And why would you think that?"

"I've seen the photos, I know the truth. Now I know what type of person she is. How she lied to me went behind my back, and even went as far as wanting to disappear with her little group, making us all worry, making her parents do what they did" Evie's eyes roll around in their sockets as she holds on to her consciousness. Those photos have cost her so much and they are not even her.

She doesn't even care about Damon. If he doesn't believe in her and doesn't know what type of person she was and still is, because there was not one moment of her captivity that she enjoyed, she took pleasure in or she thought for one moment that she wanted that or deserved that.

The photos cost her her freedom for four years and the woman in the photos. The one that Evie is sure is going around claiming that Evie is the star. Madison is the one in the photos. It was always Madison.

Connor can't even stand talking to these two anymore and he needs to get Evie out. Connor makes up some soft excuses and some vague promises of alliances.

He would never have an alliance with such people. Evie deserves more than that.

As soon as they are in the car, Evie's tears that she thought had dried for a lifetime erupt once more.

She doesn't cry for the loss of Damon. She doesn't cry for the hatred that Madison displays. She cries for the loss of her parents and the loss of her own life.

Connor doesn't even need Evie to tell him. He knows what happened without her saying a single word. Evie had told him of the photos and as soon as Connor had seen that Evie had a twin sister he knew what had happened.

Connor thought they were coming here today to find out what happened but he knows now that they were only coming to confirm.

The car is silent as they drive over the border of the Azure pack. Connor has turned down the music and doesn't say a word. Just allowing Evie to vent her emotions.

"What do you want to do??"

Evie sniffles as she wipes her eyes, a small flame igniting behind her eyes.

"I want to take the Azure pack"

Connor looks out the front windscreen, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel.

"I can take it for you. I can leave them both with nothing, but that isn't the way that I want to do this and I'm hoping that is not the way you want to do this either" "I don't"

"Well, what do you want to do??"

"I want to take back everything that I am owed, I want to take it all back myself"

"It is going to be hard, but I will be with you every step of the way. Are you ready for this?"

"I am ready"

"It is a good thing that they think you are dead"

Evie nods with fierce determination in her voice as she says.

"Because when I come back to life I am going to be magnificent"
