What Separates Me and You -
Chapter 425 He Won't Go Down Easily
The officers exchanged glances among themselves.
"You make a good point. But that's one of the doubts we have. Hence our question, Mr. Alvarez. Are Mr. Acre's claims true?" Zach asked.
Lewis kneaded his temple and sighed. "Let's not talk about the will first. Mr. Acre disappeared after leaving behind this letter. Then, you just happened to find it lying about. From the looks of that, I now doubt that even this letter is fake."
"Well, it's Mr. Acre's handwriting, no doubt."
Lewis pointed out, "Someone else could've imitated his handwriting. It's possible. People can forge renowned paintings and ancient artifacts, let alone a mere letter.
"You may suspect I'm related to Mr. Acre's disappearance or that the letter's content is true. If that's the case, show me the evidence or the true will. You'll need concrete proof to judge me, not dive straight into the interrogation."
"I told you, Mr. Alvarez, we're only asking these questions as part of our investigation. We don't mean to interrogate you. Please cooperate."
Lewis smiled. "I won't be wasting my time sitting here with you if I don't intend to cooperate. That's all I have to say. You may speak to my lawyer if you have other doubts."
Conrad was watching from outside. He couldn't help but feel anxious for Lewis when he saw things were getting tense.
Suddenly, someone tapped his shoulder.
Conrad swiveled around and saw it was Seth. He sighed in relief. "You scared the hell out of me. What is it?"
Seth took a glimpse at the meeting room and smiled. "I heard the chairman is facing a little trouble, so I'm here to check things out. How is everything?"
"How would I know?" Conrad couldn't even hear the conversation from there. A thought crossed his mind, and he turned to look at Seth. "Is it you?" Seth tilted his head. "What do you mean? It's illegal to spread lies, Mr. Berg."
Conrad snorted. "Stop pretending. I know you too well," he said, as he thought, "You're working hand in glove with Kiran, after all."
Seth smiled and said nothing. His gaze fell on the man in the meeting room, who remained calm and composed.
After some time, he tapped Conrad's shoulder again. "Don't worry. Our chairman won't go down that easily." With that, he walked past Conrad and left.
Conrad glared at his silhouette. "I knew it was you!"
His words didn't perturb Seth one bit.
Conrad was gritting his teeth furiously when the meeting room's door opened. Lewis walked out. He looked frosty as he walked straight toward the elevator. He didn't even glance at Conrad.
Conrad dared not say anything. He caught up with Lewis, and they went to Lewis' office.
Lewis tugged his tie. He felt it was a nuisance, so he tore it down and casually cast it aside. He stuck his hands in his pockets as he went to the window and looked at the skyscrapers.
Conrad approached him cautiously. He asked, "Sir, what did they say?"
Lewis kept quiet. Several moments later, he turned to look at Conrad. "Send someone to look into Mr. Acre."
"Hasn't he gone missing?"
Lewis' eyes flickered as he gazed into the distance. "All the more reason to find him. Dead or alive, I want to see him."
Conrad thought about it and nodded. "That letter ... Mr. Acre can't have written it, can he?"
Lewis smirked. "Do you believe that?"
Conrad shook his head. "I don't. Someone must've forged it and abducted Mr. Acre. He's trying to lead the police to the true will."
"What do you mean 'the true will'?" Lewis shot him an icy look.
Conrad's eyes widened, and he immediately slapped himself. "Sorry, that was a slip of the tongue. I mean, the police think there's another will. They had only resorted to this because they couldn't find any breakthroughs at Mr. Acre's."
Conrad's survival instinct kicked in, and he quickly tried to fix his mistake. "They will be disappointed as the will you're holding is genuine!"
Lewis leaned against the window and lit a cigarette. Wisps of smoke rose and drifted out of the window.
Getting no further instructions, Conrad turned and left the office.
Meanwhile, Nancy received an email from Mr. Lawson. It contained the documents she requested. It was Lewis' treatment records from several years ago after the car accident.
She studied the records but found nothing out of place. Finally, she kept them in her drawer and went to Styx Mansion.
She was alone in the manor and felt very lonely. Furthermore, unending construction noises came from the burnt mansion every day. It was hard for her to remain undisturbed.
She couldn't understand what was going through Lewis's head when he decided to rebuild it. The construction would take months to complete.
Avery was taking Josephine out for a ride when Nancy arrived at Styx Mansion.
They met her when she was getting out of the car.
Josephine didn't recognize her. Avery pulled Josephine behind her.
Nancy dismissed their actions and asked, "Is Lewis at home?"
Avery answered, "He left hours ago." Then, she pulled Josephine outside and helped her put on the helmet. "Put this on, and we'll be on our way." Josephine touched the heavy helmet. Then, she turned to look at Nancy, who had already strolled into the mansion.
"Who's that?" asked Josephine.
Avery hopped onto the motorcycle and huffed, "Who else? She's Lewis' mother."
Avery started the engine. The motorcycle bolted off at an alarming speed. Josephine got scared and quickly held onto Avery.
"Sit tight. I'll take you for a ride."
Josephine hummed in response. She tightly wrapped her arms around Avery's waist.
Although the days were growing warmer, the breeze that blew at them was still chilly.
Josephine shrank behind Avery to avoid the cold breeze. She looked at the scenery that passed them by and felt thrilled.
They whizzed through the streets. Several moments later, Avery felt her phone vibrating persistently. "Tsk. Who could it be?"
She pulled up by the side and glanced at the caller ID. Her face immediately darkened.
The caller was none other than Lewis! Could he have realized she had brought Josephine out?
Wondering, she answered the phone. "What is it?"
Lewis' reply was short and simple, "Take her back."
Avery's brows knitted. She questioned him, "Wait, are you monitoring her?"
"I'll say it once more. Take her back, or you won't meet her tomorrow."
Avery was pissed off. She retaliated, "Why would you keep her locked up in the house all the time? She's already sick. Aren't you afraid her condition will worsen from getting cooped up at home?"
"It's not your concern. Don't make me repeat what I said. Avery Green, you'll bear the consequences if you continue being stubborn."
Avery could sense the frost in his tone through the phone.
Lewis hung up after warning her. He didn't say anything else.
Avery sighed in frustration. She turned around. "Josie, do you want to go back?"
Josephine leaned on her, hugging her tightly. She was nodding off to sleep.
"Josie?"
Josephine stirred and looked up in a daze. "Hm?"
"I'll send you back." Avery probably sensed something was wrong with Josephine. It was weird to see her fall asleep during a ride. Josephine rubbed her eyes and murmured, "Mm... I want to sleep."
