What Separates Me and You -
Chapter 426 His Eyes Are Purely Decorative
Doubts budded in Avery's heart. Why was Josephine sleepy all of a sudden? It had barely been two hours since she got out of bed, hadn't it? But then, she remembered what Josephine and Lewis might have been up to last night. If that was the case, it wasn't surprising that Josephine had insufficient sleep.
Avery mulled over it and decided to send Josephine home.
Josephine fell asleep while they were traveling at high speed. The scenery passing by was truly mesmerizing.
They reached the mansion at the same time as a black Bentley. It stopped several feet away, and Lewis got down.
Avery exclaimed in exasperation, "I'm amazed at how well-timed you are. Where did you install the surveillance camera, I wonder?"
Lewis didn't answer her. He went to check on Josephine, who was on the pillion seat.
Josephine was fast asleep. Lewis removed her helmet, and her hair fell to cover her face. Josephine stirred. She glanced at him and shut her eyes again.
Lewis carried her down from the motorcycle and told Avery, "I'm warning you, Avery. Don't bring her outside, especially on your pathetic bike."
"What horrendous taste! You're the one with a pathetic car." Avery wondered if his eyes were purely decorative. How could he call such a stylish motorcycle pathetic?
Lewis was not at all interested in her ride. He headed for the mansion with Josephine in his arms. At the door, he heard Nancy ordering Mrs. Larson about.
"Oh dear, look at that! There's dust all over. What have you been doing?
"Can't those dogs stay outside? Their excrement stinks!"
Mrs. Larson explained, "Mrs. Alvarez, the dogs know to relieve themselves outside. They won't do it in the house."
Nancy glared at her. "It stinks if I say it is! Who's the one giving orders around here?"
"They are Mr. Alvarez's pets."
"And he's my son. Are you telling me I don't get to decide where his pets live?"
Mrs. Larson was in a dilemma. She hemmed and hawed until she saw Lewis entering. She felt relieved to have found her pillar of strength. She quickly went to Lewis and said, "Mr. Alvarez, she "
Lewis interrupted, "I heard her." Then, he went upstairs.
Nancy saw him carrying Josephine and huffed, "Why do you have to carry her? She's an adult. Can't she walk on her own?"
Lewis ignored her. He didn't even greet her as he turned a corner and went up the stairs.
Nancy was infuriated. Her son was blatantly disrespecting her!
Lewis put Josephine on the bed and pulled the blanket over her. She smacked her lips and turned, oblivious to everything that had happened around her.
Lewis stared at her for several moments before leaving the bedroom.
Nancy was waiting at the stairs. She was ready to swamp Lewis with criticism the moment she saw him. "Lewis, are you planning to disown me?" Lewis stood before her and looked at her condescendingly. Their gazes locked for several seconds, and Nancy paused.
The sudden realization that Lewis actually towered over her dawned on her. She was wearing a pair of heels, but even so, she barely reached his shoulders. It was her first time noticing such a stark contrast in their heights.
Lewis stared at her and said, "It seems like you have too much time on your hands." With that, he stepped around her and went to the sofa. Nancy snapped back to her senses and quickly followed him. "I do, Lewis. That's why I plan on staying with you for some time."
Lewis paused. He looked back at her. "Is Alvarez Manor too small for you?"
"It's not that. It's just boring to live there all alone. At least I'll have your company if I'm here."
"I don't have time to keep you company. If you're bored, you can always catch up with your friends."
Nancy stepped in front of him and stared into his eyes. "Lewis, why are you behaving this way? No matter what, I'm still your mother. Is it wrong for me to stay over? You have spare rooms, don't you?"
Lewis lit a cigarette and casually cast the lighter aside. It fell to the table with a soft but rattling clack.
Nancy sat as she continued, "Lewis, there's another matter I need to talk to you about."
"What is it?"
"You said I'm eligible to inherit half of Robert's fortune, but the amount I receive is less than what you promised."
Lewis gave her a side-eye. "I told you it's all stated in the will. You can always bring the matter to the lawyer if you have differing opinions. I can't help you with that."
Nancy didn't understand. "Was he messing around when he wrote the will? Why would he give you 95 percent of everything he owned?"
Lewis scoffed, and that caused Nancy to grow uneasy. He questioned, "That leads to another question I have for you. Why do you need so much money?"
Lewis looked at her nonchalantly. He seemed to be trying to read her thoughts. "It'll all be mine if you can't finish spending it, right? Unless ... there's someone else you plan on giving it to."
Nancy was stunned. She averted her gaze shiftily and looked as though she had done something she shouldn't. "What nonsense are you spouting? You're my son, so everything I have belongs to you. Who else can I pass them on to? It's just that I have Daphne to think about too!"
Lewis fixed his gaze on her face, sending goosebumps crawling all over her. She felt like he could see right through her.
After a while, Lewis withdrew his gaze. He calmly asked, "Why does it matter to you who got more of Robert's inheritance?" Nancy couldn't argue her case.
Lewis continued, "It's still early. You should go."
Nancy's head jerked up. "Are you kicking me out of your house?"
"I'm respectfully asking you to leave. I don't mind resorting to kicking you out if you insist."
"You!" Nancy sprung up from her seat. Her eyes were ablaze as she glared at him. She was so mad she was shaking all over. "How dare you treat your own mother like this just because you're all grown up! Think about the consequences!"
Lewis leaned back on the sofa and looked at her with a smirk. "All the more reason for you to be thankful to be my mother. Appreciate what you have, and stop thinking you can do whatever you want just because you're my mother."
Nancy's expression changed. "What do you mean?"
"I'm just saying." He didn't intend to clear her doubts. He put out his cigarette and stood. "Mrs. Larson, see her off."
His directive gave Mrs. Larson courage. She dared not retort when that hag ordered her about, but she had nothing to worry about now that Lewis had spoken. "Mrs. Alvarez, I'll see you out."
Nancy's blood boiled at Mrs. Larson's firm attitude. The former glared at Lewis, but he ignored her and went upstairs.
"Lewis Alvarez!"
Again, Lewis turned a deaf ear to her and entered the bedroom.
Josephine was sprawled out on the bed. The blanket was under her instead of the other way around. A cold gust of wind entered the room through the open window and ruffled her hair.
Lewis sat on the edge of the bed and reached out to tidy her hair. His fingers brushed against her tender skin. She grunted and tried to push his hand away.
His thoughtful eyes landed on her face as he stroked her cheek. He slowly traced his finger to her lips.
Lewis' rough touch made Josephine uncomfortable. She instinctively stuck out her tongue to lick where he touched.
The tip of her tongue flitted across his finger, and he froze.
